Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Post-release)

Re: Star Wars TFA - How much they got paid **SPOILERS**

Another Thread on TFA. Maybe I should make one of my own since it seems like it's the wild west with no marshalls.

Don't threaten, just go do it. It will disappear rapidly so no problem. If you have time to read a thread about a movie, you have time to read- or ignore- multiple threads about a movie.

You know what's really funny.....you both posted in this thread...:lol;)

Re: Star Wars TFA. Warning spoilers and I hate it!!! Haters and Lovers Welcome

ANH drops you into the middle of a universe with zero preamble or exposition beyond the crawl. TFA does the exact same thing but everyone has meta knowledge and have their own expectations as to what the galaxy is now. Just let it go and enjoy the film. It's that easy. This thread is sad, that this movie by every metric is terrific and yet a TINY handful just can't get it.

That would be those fans who read and loved and lived the EU. They feel cheated by Disney's removal of all of those characters and events. They watch Han call out 'Ben' and cringe. I don't sympathize with them, making all of the EU, which was a mix of some good, some mediocre, and a fair amount of bad, included as part of the new trilogy would be really painful to the casual moviegoer. I own all those EU books, (well, almost all of them up the a few years ago) but I don't need or want them to be part of the new movies. Besides, can someone explain to me just how Splinter of the Minds Eye can be canon? No, don't bother, it's a book and I know why it was created.
It's possible some bits and pieces will show up, but they won't need gobs of exposition.

Some may say that there is no greater deed, or task, or mission than to save your own child, even at risk of sacrificing yourself. Though the death was to a degree unceremonious, there is a strong (albeit perhaps subdued) poignancy to Solo's death.

And the story has yet to unfold...

While Han may now only live in our hearts and imaginations, there is perhaps still hope that his death was not in vain. Perhaps his efforts to redeem the love of his son was indeed an unwitting sacrifice that contributes to an as-of-yet unseen benefit.

I have read a fair amount of people not understanding why Han would do something so obviously dangerous. If that's my daughter, I go try. If I'm already somewhat dead inside because of what she's done, maybe, just maybe, I have that glimmer of hope (my force sensitive wife told me that some good still resides inside of her) that she can come back to me as I remember her before.

Re: "All I wanna do is complain about TFA" - only thread

I am ticked off...that the film is ONLY at 93% audience approval rating and 95% critically. And it only made $230M this weekend. Clearly it sucks balls.
At the moment they're reporting $248 million (I assume that's domestic) and a global sum of $529 million, and that it crushed the "opening weekend" and "worldwide debut" records previously held by Jurassic World.

Re: Star Wars TFA. Warning spoilers and I hate it!!! Haters and Lovers Welcome

...yes it's really weird that she just ignores Chewie to hug Rey..

but even weirder when you realize that this is actually the first time Leia and Rey even meet. Rey was already captured when Leia first appears. As far as Leia knows Rey is just the friend Finn mentioned wanting to rescue.
There was a hint of an underlying familiarity between Leia and Han, and Rey, as if a relationship exists that we aren't privy to yet. I'm guessing we'll find out Rey is either Luke's daughter or, considering the way they're echoing themes from the Original Trilogy movies, Kylo Ren's twin sister who was somehow separated from her family as an infant.

Re: Star Wars TFA - How much they got paid **SPOILERS**

I don't get it- I don't mind a hundred threads, that was my point- so why wouldn't I post I it?

Re: Star Wars TFA. Warning spoilers and I hate it!!! Haters and Lovers Welcome

I do have to wonder what it would be like if the internet was around during "The Empire Strikes Back"...

Let's enter the world of WHAT IF?!?!?

*After viewing a midnight screening of The Empire Strikes back, jaded nerds hit the keyboards... here are their complaints:

"So the victory at the end of Star Wars was pointless? The Empire is just as powerful? Who cares if the deathstar is destroyed when you have a million star destroyers and now a SUPER STAR DESTROYER!?!?! LAME!"

"What was the point of a medals ceremony if all they did was slightly cripple a huge Empire? LAME. WHERE'S MY HAPPY ENDING!??! WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE FIRST MOVIE?!?!"

"What a crap ending! What happens now?! Why didn't it have an ending?"

"How did Luke hold himself up in a lazer sword fight with a trained Evil jedi?! When did he learn to use that lightsaber? 4 minutes in a new hope and he actually lasts against Vader? Vader hunted down and killed all the jedi!!!"

"Oh so now with the force you can suddenly make stuff float? Convenient. Why didn't they mention that in the first film? Why didn't kenobi just use the force then to turn the controls on the Death Star tractor beam?"

"How did Luke get to Bespin so fast? is it just around the corner from Degobah?"

"I wanted to see more of tattoine!!!!! Where's the dessert planet! I don't wanna see this sound stage swamp crap."

"It's the most boringingest!" - Young Mike Stolska

"If Luke is a great pilot, then why does he crash TWO starships in 30 minutes?!"

"Why can the Millenium Falcon, that could only slightly veer left when being chased by Star Destroyers in Star Wars, suddenly easily maneuver around and inbetween them??! Couldn't do that before... and those two Star Destroyers hitting eachother??!? Don't they have nav computers that can fix that?"

"George shoulda wrote the screenplay instead of getting help. I wanna see THAT movie"...

Oh man.. I don't even want to get into the Jedi reviews... yikes.

Wow. Ok.

For or the record though, after 12 pages of them stating their reasons, perhaps it's possible that they aren't the ones not getting something?

but since you're here...this forum has picked apart every sci if movie that's come along since it was started. It's pretty much the entirety of its reason for existing as a forum: to go over the minutiae of a film.

so my question to you is: why should this one film be immune? Why is it somehow "Sad" for an individual to not love. Absolutely Love every single frame of this magnificent shining example of perfection? Even more so that the originals, which...btw...we STILL have threads picking them apart making it to the front page, even as recently as this week.

edit; btw...I did enjoy the film. Saw it twice. They got my money and welcome to it. Well earned. But it did have a couple of issues, and whether it hurts your feelings or not, this really is pretty much exactly the right place to mention them. OP even put it in a new thread so as not to offend the main one with our picking over details.

This sums up my feelings about the movie in one fell swoop (digitally blurred cursing is for the forum's benefit):

Actually a great many of these were said, just not on the Internet. Magazine articles, movie reviews, etc. I remember Alan Dean Foster going through the movie in a long article, pondering what the asteroid creature could possibly eat, and so forth. What I really remember from his article was that Yoda should have raised the X-wing a bit, lowered it back into the swamp, and told Luke that when he was ready he could get it himself.
The problem with that being if he's ready then he is ready to face Vader, which he wasn't.
I also remember Ford responding to the lack of an ending by saying something along the line of "I figure there's eleven dollars of entertainment in this movie and you paid seven bucks. You still came out ahead."
Of course, my memories are clouded by thirty years of time.

This is what I recall from the ESB when it was first released.

"WTF? ... to be continued?"

"Mark Hamill sure looks different since the accident. Looks like they explained that with the Wampa attack."

"It's a dark movie."

"Hoth scenes were great."

Everybody was quoting Yoda.

Everybody was humming the Empire theme ... it's really catchy and iconic.

No matter how much you didn't like TFA, it was still much better than the emo-fest and heavy-handed moralizing of the prequel trilogy, ESPECIALLY that steaming pile of bantha poodoo known as Episode I.

Re: "I loved or mostly loved TFA" - people only thread

So with R2, the way I saw it when I saw it was, Rey and Kylo saber fight. shes in a bad spot, gets reminded about the force and closes her eyes. then Luke's theme plays. she called out to Luke with the force (possibly blood relation boosted), which was the signal he'd been waiting for while in hiding, then reactivated R2 to clue in everyone where he was. He knew Rey was there and had the map piece nearby waiting to go, but the map was useless without his consent and rebooting of R2

Re: Star Wars TFA - How much they got paid **SPOILERS**

don't know if the 2/3 of a million is accurate or not but still a good payday for virtually unknown upstarts. i'm sure they'll sweeten the pot for them in the near future as well( if they haven't already in their contracts).

Re: Star Wars TFA. Warning spoilers and I hate it!!! Haters and Lovers Welcome

There are holes and there are "holes."

Obviously certain plot elements are obfuscated purposefully (Rey's parents). Other things, like how Poe got off Jakku (apparently abandoning the mission he was on), start to pose stranger questions about the "holes."

I'm drawn into the film enough to want to know more.

Kasdan made an astute comment about how ANH is confusing as well too. Obi Wan talks about "the clone wars" as if the audience knew what the hell he was talking about, no other exposition.

Ok, I just saw it in 3D. OMFG!!!!! HOW COULD YOU NOT LIKE THIS FILM?!?!?! It was so full of emotion and brutal and REAL!!! Right from the beginning! The blaster bolt, a gentle mix of comedy. Great old and new cast mingling. The Lightsaber fights were rough and full of emotion. Han and his son. Holy s!@#!!!!!! I went in for the most part spoiler free. That was so refreshing not knowing! I'm not going to nit pick this in the least. I honestly think, for me, this is the best Star Wars FOR ME. You may not agree, but OMG. JJ in my eyes was a true fan boy, both of OT and PT and gave a great blend. Kylo Ren is great! He is going to be a force to be reckoned with in upcoming films. I'm so glad he wasn't a one and done. I can't wait to see more. This film makes you want more! Excellent job JJ! Amazing!

Yeah friends like that, then they want to crash at your house, temporarily of course until they get on their feet, borrow some money and then your car is missing.
