Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Post-release)

I got the Target version yesterday but haven't had time to watch it. Based on what I've read, it just has an exclusive interview with Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, and a "deeper look at the movie's props" ... hopefully it'll be worth the extra $5!

Good lord this movie looks and sounds great on BR. The extras were fun, though I wish there was an intro to each deleted scene explaining why it was cut. I agree with some others that the main doc felt like it fell a little flat, but TPM and ROTS maybe spoiled me on excellent making-of docs. And I could watch Daisy Ridley train in those gray yoga pants every minute until the day I died and not feel my life had been a waste. Dddddamn.

Theres so many people moaning that Rey is a 'Mary Sue',...well I think I understand where the writers got that inspiration from......

.....Daisy Ridley,.......she can act,....fight,....looks great....& can rap:

.....definitely too much talent in one person

I'm very disappointed with the severe lack of special features on this bluray set. Though the packaging says that this is the film event of a generation, which is to my mind a grand overstatement, Lucas at least offered a wealth of insight into the making of his films. While he had his faults creatively I think he more than delivered with regards to bonus material. In fact the past material was so good that I often revisit it and completely ignore episodes 1, 2, and 3 altogether. While the peek behind the scenes on TFA is interesting, the material feels unfocused and more like an overview than any true documentary. The upside is that the film itself is really fun and looks spectacular on bluray.

I'm shocked that they didn't put more thought into it knowing how obsessive we are, wanting to devour every detail at length. Their marketing was very well done leading up to the movie's release by leaving us with wanting more, but unless that was their intention for this home release, I think they missed the mark.

Personally I would prefer to have a superior film like TFA then superior bonus content on a DVD release. I know it's hard for some to accept, but this is the new paradigm of home video release content. Physical media is slowing being usurped by digital only and that trend will continue. The result will be less $ spent in packaging of physical media and more reliance on digital which can provide a constant stream if additional content over time at a much lower cost to the distributor. Point being, I would not be surprised to see additional extra TFA content released over the next 2 years to keep the audience engaged. And yes that will cost extra. Also the actual market for the super detailed extra features is actually pretty small compared to the overall addressable market.

You shouldn't be shocked, because they aren't really selling to "you" or to "us" for that matter. They're selling to the general audience, and the general audience really just wants to watch the movie itself and doesn't care so much about the extras, unless it's maybe something like cast commentary tracks. Even then, most people...just wanna watch the film again and that's it. Spending money and cutting down on sound/image quality to fit additional material on a disc that people won't watch is kind of a losing proposition for studios. Right now, I'd say they only include anything along these lines because (A) it's become expected for disc-based entertainment and you'll take hits in reviews for NOT having anything if you want to charge $19.99, and (B) it helps move digital copies at the $19.99 price point.

Three words: 2-disc set. You keep the quality of the movie on one disc with perhaps commentary track and then keep all bonus content on a separate disc. Of all the single and two-disc options I've seen... the 2-disc option sells out faster than the one disc - probably because there are more 1-discs printed, but still... I've never seen a 2-disc or more set linger for a long time on sale.

I know the vast majority of audiences don't care about bonus material but I thought that Star Wars might be an exception to that rule. Even cinephiles might even be an exception given that there is a market for collectors who want insightful content into the making of the films they love.

Don't get me wrong, I don't care that much about extra content with most films, but when it comes to big tentpole movies you'd think the marketing department would be smart enough to release a standard version and a more substantial collectors version.

Whether they release them or not fans will never stop clamoring for a properly restored OT set. That's just the way we are. Stubborn. hahaha

This was a 3-disc (blu ray, DVD and bonus) set and the bonus features are still lackadaisical. Disney opted to cash-in while the fervor was still at a high.

Well, you know, special features take time. They worked on the actual film up until around thanksgiving I think. Probably took a break til january before working the BR/DVD and had to be done with that by maybe mid february to have a master ready to print millions of copies and get them distributed by the end of march so places can have them shipped to your door on 4/5.

You don't get world class bonus material completed in 4 weeks.

This is Star Wars. In 2 years there will be a 5-disc Mega-Bonus-Super-Collector's Special-Director's-Cut with 19 hours of never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage. Everybody just chill.

:rolleyes

Birds gotta fly, fish gotta swim :p

But my inner caveman aside, aren't Fox's rights up for ANH next year? So we could be getting a super mega box set with the OOT? I really hope the extras on this disc were meh because there's a doozy of a box set in the works. I refuse to buy the PT on BR twice, and the OT on BR is an abomination against taste and decency, so TFA is my only SW BR at the moment. I'd love if that changed next year. They can double dip this time. I'll forgive them.

They have the backing of DISNEY. They have infinite resources. They could release the deluxe super terrific happy edition the same day it hit theaters if they wanted to. They're just following the sh*tty DVD sales model that's become the industry standard. Release a crappy standard version. Release a special edition version. Then, when they've maxed out sales on those release the uber collectors version.

I would expect that extra bonus materials will be streamed out over time and/or included in some boxed/mega set later.

Fox holds on to the rights for Episodes 1-6.......BUT.....the first film Star Wars (Ep 5, ANH) it owns......the other 5 films they have till May 2020

2020? Damn I thought it was next year for sure. Oh well.

I will say that, as a guy who is mega pissed I would have to buy a new Mad Max anthology of four films I already own just to get the black and white Fury Road (which I'd really like to have) that I feel the pain of those annoyed at the milking. I guess I've just come to develop some kind of Star Wars Stockholm Syndrome where I expect, tolerate, nay ENCOURAGE the financial reaming from Lucasfilm.

Did someone want commentary!?!?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbSmEMJW1yM

I have no idea who these two are but - Yeah never mind, it's me and my friend, Jenn (Lead animator on Clone Wars)...

I do this a lot, get my friends together to do commentary on Movies we like, I just usually don't post them. Mostly I do it cuz they're fun to re listen to years later.

And yes I was drunk during this.

I'm going to check this out after I watch my copy. Thanks!

Watch them pack a bunch of new bonus content on the 3d blu ray release that way they can try to get people who do not own a 3d tv to buy the movie again.
