Star Wars TFA X-wing snap kit paint project!

I picked up one of these small entry level snap kits a while ago and decided to paint it recently. Still in progress. All of the weathering was done with the pastels technique and occasional black primer splatter! Pretty fun, but now I'm wishing I got the bigger kit!

This looks excellent! Aside from being an entry level model, it has better detail in some areas than the bigger 1/50 scale kit. I look forward to seeing more!

Looks good! How about a pic with a size reference included (like a finger or coin of the realm...)?

Regards, Robert

Thanks for the comments! I always love painting the beat up looking rebel ships. As much as I like the TFA x-wing, I'd have to say I love the original much more. I might try this technique on another old MPC kit after this.

Did some more weathering work on the fuselage and started on the wings! Ill have to mask off parts of then engine for the metallic and gray accents on them. Definitely agree that this small model has quite a few details on it! And the fun factor with the sound fx is a plus :D

I put this aside for awhile, but started working on it again recently! I will take some shots when it's done with an soda can or something to show the scale, but you can get an idea by looking at the wood floorboards, which are about 3.5" wide. It's damn a small model. But I kind of like it as it doesnt take up space haha. I ordered a Bandai 1/72 scale Y-wing to paint next. Bandai's kits look FAR better. Way more details.

Excellent work, ecl.

I'm currently building the black version of this x-wing and had 2 questions (if you have time to respond).

It looks like you actually hollowed out the "steps" on both sides of fuselage, or did you just paint the inner circles black?

How did you go about chipping the canopy? The black version's is metallic silver. I'm curious if you repainted yours or simply scratched the original paint.

thanks,
Jim

Thanks everyone for the comments!

Jimmer: Sure no problem! I did in fact hollow out the steps. I did that mainly because it just looked that way in some of the references of the full size X-wing (the shots with JJ Abrams standing next to it). It also kind of adds a bit of dimension to the area too. As for the canopy, this one was also silver originally. All I did was paint a coat of gray over it, and then chipped into it, revealing some of the silver underneath. This was initially by accident as I just wanted it to be gray, but it started to chip some. I kind of like the way it looks so I just chipped into it a bit more! From the references I've seen of the regular light colored X-wings, the canopies look grayish. Good luck with your build! I just received a couple of bandai kits....and the details are mind blowing. I'll start a few new threads for those!

Hey, ecl.

Thanks for the info.

I painted the steps on mine black and painted the round rim silver, but since the fuselage on mine is black it barely shows. Yours looks so good I think I'll borrow (blatantly steal) your idea and hollow them out if you don't mind...lol.

Your cockpit came out really nice. My idea was to chip the existing silver on the canopy, but that silver is really on there. In the end I was afraid of just scratching the finish so I just added some scorching. I'll post some pics in a day or two.

I'm looking forward to Bandai X-Wing also. This project is actually my prep run before starting Bandai's. Can't wait to see yours.

Thanks again.

astroboy: Whoa I've never seen those! I'm assuming it's from a deleted scene? Not sure though

Jimmer: I look forward to seeing progress on your project! Right now I'm working on a Bandai Tie fighter and AT-ST...have a y-wing that has yet to arrive. The Y-wing is the kit that I really want to paint as it's my favorite vehicle. The bandai kits are just ridiculously cool; a bit small, but they're amazing.

Shows how even a snap kit can look awesome with the right touch! I especially like how you dirtied up the area around the left hand side of the cockpit to reflect the scuffing and grime from pilots climbing in and out on that side.
