STAR WARS Rebels new animated series!

This first season finale looks so good it already has me in withdrawals waiting for season 2.

Before the first show even aired, I expected great things but I was also preparing myself for a slow start till it found its footing., but wow! This show hit the ground running.

I realize that I complain about this show a lot. And most of it is because I loved the clone wars. There was a never-ending well of great stories for that show.

But I think I finally realized the two factors that hold this back.

#1 This is obvious but the clone wars was way more comfortable with 4 part stories. Most of the show was comprised of them. It was basically a series of star wars movies. Which is awesome. They really gave stories the opportunity to grow.

#2 This is less obvious but TCW had that great recap narration at the beginning of every episode. This allowed them to enter the story in the middle of the action. I remember an old writing teacher of mine telling us that you should start your story as close to the climax as possible. And using that narration, the clone wars was able to. Rebels doesn't do anything like this. Which means that it often feels like there's so much establishing that has to happen. The down side of this is that the stories feel rather empty. 22 minutes goes by before you know it. There's no room for a curveball, character development or even reflection.

Just enjoy it man. It's not meant to be that deep. It's meant to be simple light hearted fun and easy for kids to follow. I enjoy the hell out of it with my son. I love TCW too but this is meant to be a different animal. Simple enjoyable fun that is Star Wars at heart. For me a lot of the PT and TCW stuff was way too political and that kinda drifts from the Star Wars of old. This doesn't. I too miss Ashoka but I'm willing to let it go now and move on. Just enjoy this for what it is and don't think too much about it. :)

TCW was not like that in the first few seasons. I did not mind the 4 part stories but in some cases they felt stretched. The other con was that the 4 part stories meant only 5 stories a year. I'd rather have a mix of those with one or two parters to get more stories. Especially when you consider that TCW bounced from focus on one group of characters to another. I have no problem with that but you might have to wait 4, 8, or 12 episodes to see stories of a character you like.

i sort of miss this simply because the marrative was a vocal of the movie crawl. Those crawls really came to life when I started reading them in the same voice/tone of the narrator from the show. It had never occurred to me that they might have been written in a way like the old WW2 news short that they used to show in theaters back then. However... You don't need this to establish previous action. You can give that information in the dialog of the characters. Such as we did not have to see Hera's first contact with Fulcruum. It was simply brought up in one show that Hera was now working with a mysterious figure.

nothing is holding this show back, I think you are holding yourself back.

That was freaking awesome!! this has been pretty good from the start but the last there were just amazing totally capturing the feel of the OT.

I must have a Sabine TIE.

Did they cut a bit at the end of the one with the TIE fighter, from the back and forth it seemed obvious they didn't destroy it, and I thought they were going to cut back to it right at the end of the episode, but it just kind of ended abruptly.

You called it. :thumbsup
