Wow! McQuarrie style X-Wing and TIEs. I could not be more excited about this. I hope they skip some time after ROTS as I do not care to se Jedi Purge type stories. I am so sick of Jedi. Nothing but Jedi since 1999. I need a break from them.

Interesting. I could be convinced to check it out, based on the timeframe, depending on what the animation style is. I really could NOT get into the first Clone Wars thing due in no small part to despising the Tartakovsky animation style.

I'm sure it wont be all about Jedi...but I'd expect to see them at least on occasion.

I've definitely taken the bait that it will be based on McQuarrie's art hook, line, and sinker.

but I'm almost certain they'll spice that with the dayglow kid friendly design elements that make the prequils and the clone wars cartoons so hard to look at and enjoy.

Finally, a series that isn't based around a fake struggle or has a child murdering psychopath for a main character.... well, at least not yet.

I hope it is 2D cel animation. It has an organic, unpredictable nature that gives it an advantage over sterile CG animation.

If they do go with CG, let's hope they start over on the character models. I think we can all agree the blocky Thunderbirds look of the Clone Wars models was a misstep that nobody ever warmed up to.

I would argue the quality of animation in the Cline Wars in the final season was spectacular and as they have developed their animation technology to that point would suspect they will continue that style.

I was really hoping for a post ROTJ series to lead into Episode 7, but this premise sound fun. Although it does fall into that same issue that many had problems with the prequels and the clone wars (we already knows how it ends).

As long as the stories are good, I really do not care about the animation style. I trust that we will get something cool.

I agree. The quality of the animation was great. But the character models of the human characters were just awful. Joel Aron knew how to light it and make it look beautiful, but those human character models given to him were like handing a box of Crayolas to Frank Frazetta.

I am not sure what's with all the hate with the CW animation. People watch anime and do not have a problem with the pointy hair, really round eyes and non realistic mouth. Jeeze, I really hate anime. Now I will admit that given a choice between CW style and a more realistic modeling, I would choose the more realistic approach. But no matter what, I am watching.

awesome... just as I had hoped and predicted in our talk about The Clone Wars coming to an end. I had figured the time frame between Rots and New Hope or at least just before new hope would be done... because with that not only does Vader live again but we still have Artoo and Threepio working for Capt. Antilles aboard the Tantive IV, we will get stormtroopers, and in theory, they could stretch a little and there are still Jedi hold outs that Vader has to "hunt down and destroy" we could even see soem of them visiting Yoda on Dagobah perhaps... a bit of a stretch but GL did have a "list" of those that visited Yoda while he was in seclusion in his bible he handed over to Disney and Kathleen Kennedy... Yoda is a beloved character so why not? Also a young Leia Organa on her "mercy missions" working spy networks while building up the rebel alliance! ooooh I'm so stoked for this!

"Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. " YES!

Not particularly a fan of the CW style but you could tell it was very well done and it certainly had my kids enthralled. This series spans a time that I think could make for some really cool stories. I hope they do it well!

You must really hate roller coasters. :lol

It is not about the destination, it is about the journey.

CW did a really good job with dealing with many overlying issues that affected or were affected by the war. That type of story really filed out the series and also enhances the actual movies too. I have always wanted to know things about the rebellion.

the fact that Filoni is wanting to use concept art from McQuarrie and the color palette he chose will give it a great authentic look. Filoni was already doing this in CW using many of Joe Johnston's concept art ("Ben" Kenobi's early concept Mandalorian suit is one example) and I always loved picking out little things that only die hard SW fans would understand... this show is going to be really fun!

I hate anime too. Funny, your avatar looks manga inspired actually.

I think later on, the designs got better with Clone Wars, but when you take a look at the dreadful Dooku and Obi Wan models with those woodcut beards... Ugh. I'm sure Filoni wished he could go back and do a re-do.

I hope everyone involved sees this as an opportunity to redesign character styles and up their game. The fact that they are starting with McQuarrie art is a good sign.

:wacko You are correct. It is a modified version of an artist rendering of an anime style TPM Obi Wan (Padme was also in the original image). I have used that avatar in one form or another since I became a member back in 1999 and it is easily recognizable of my account here. Most likely if i had to chose one today, it would not be Anime.

I would rather they continue with the Clone Wars style animation.

The stories in the 2d Clone Wars were great and all, but I think all in all, the 3d series came together much nicer. The series has a distinctive visual style which is very cinematic. I don't know if anyone has had the chance to see Clone Wars on a theater screen, but I've been to two of the screenings at Lucasfilm, and it looks simply fantastic on the big screen. Filoni has basically said that they think about visual presentation from a "big screen" perspective.

I think the title "Rebels" is kind of a dead giveaway that it won't be too Jedi-centric.

This sounds cool. I also don't want to see Jedi all the time, BUT this is the period where Vader was supposed to be hunting the remaining Jedi. On a side note I'd like to here an official number from Lucas on how many Jedi survived Order 66, and then how many were left by the time of the OT.

Really I'd like to see a lot of commando type operations. The McQuarrie concept stuff sounds cool, but the Rebels weren't supposed to have gotten anything as new as an X-Wing until close to ANH. What would be cool is to see them removing the plating from the Y-Wings.

All we know is what time frame this falls, but not the exact start. There is no reason the series has to pick up right after the end of the war. Personally I would like to see it start 10 years later, right in the middle of the timeframe.

The purge stuff is not official enough to to be adhered to. LFL has no obligation to follow it. For all we know, the empire never knowingly encountered another Jedi from a few days after Order 66 till Luke.

I do hope we get some insight of the change from clone troopers to Stormtroopers. Are there clones still in existence? If not, why did they stop using them?

I also hope to see how the rebellion is funded. Are there secret corporate backers or just donation of equipment from resisting worlds. Do Hutts worry that the empire may be a threat?

I would also think it would be cool to establish the R Mc art showing two Death Stars being built.

That'd be cool. As far as the animation style goes, I think you can do something along the lines of anime-inspired stuff while still having it look...hmm....grounded? Not necessarily "realistic" or "close to human" but a little less stylized. There are a range of anime styles out there. I didn't see much of the later Clone Wars show, but the earlier one by the guy who did Powerpuff Girls and Samurai Jack I couldn't STAND. Mostly because I just hate his style across the board. It's fine for wacky kids shows, but for something like Star Wars it's TOTALLY wrong. From the still frames I've seen, something like the Tron: Uprising style would be fine. It's still out there enough to be relatable to kids, but grounded enough to look realistic for adults.

Or maybe something like the animation for the missing episodes of Doctor Who: The Invasion. Again, stylized, but still grounded.

It screams classic cartoon and is far more interesting than 90% of what's out there now. Not a fan of the anime style characters but if I can get that colour and dynamic feel in a Star Wars cartoon I wouldn't care. Although nicely animated CW always struck me as very wooden in it's feel.

Holy crap that looks great!!! What is that from? Yeah, if they came close to that style for the new show I'd squeal right along with you. Looks very much like Ralf Backache... I never watched the clone wars cause I HATE that crappy style. My favorite was Batman TAS.

^That felt like G-Force! Not sure I'd want that in Star Wars, but honestly, just that this will be set in the time period between Episodes III and IV is pure magic whatever the animation style ends up being.

Yeah, I could deal with this too. Keep it as realistic as possible, I don't want any stylization at all!! Yeah, I know this does have a style, but at least there's no pointy hair and huge eyes.. I HATE that crap!!

Skip the dissappearing helmets and this is perfect for me.

Wouldn't it be cool if they did a Star Wars animated feature in the style of classic, lavish Disney animation, like Sleeping Beauty? or even in the style of Beauty and the Beast? All glorious color, hand drawn, with beautifully painted backgrounds?

Amazing that that's probably not even a consideration with Star Wars being owned by, you know, Disney.

I wish someone there would think outside the box and really craft a masterpiece. Something really artistic and hand made. We've always said Star Wars is a modern fairy tale. I'd kill to see some beautiful animation that is old school storybook quality.

Officially they were Stormtroopers as soon as Sidious declared himself Emperor. It would be cool to see them changing their armor to the OT versions. I think the Essential Guide to Warfare had a pic of them removing their Clonetrooper Phase II armor and changing into Stormtrooper armor. Lucas said clones were still used in the OT. A small percentage were still the Jango line, but it was diluted with lackluster templates. He said some were political favors and things. So if you gave money to the Emperor you could have a clone! :lol Seeing how the troops on Endor were the Emperor's best legion, they would most likely be Jango clones, which makes that all the more ridiculous.

Don Bluth is LONG gone. On the upside, Steam has Dragon's Lair available for like $10. Also, that style of animation is, I think, not cost effective for a long-form TV show.

    Stop.

What Lucas said doesn't matter. For that matter, what Lucas said hasn't made a ton of sense for quite some time. He made crap up because it sounded good in the moment and he didn't take it particularly seriously. Sure, Han should shoot second because killing a dude who had a gun pointed at your head is all murdery unless you let him shoot at you first. Absolutely, old Anakin makes no sense because OBVIOUSLY young Anakin "died" at age 27 when he put on the armor. You betcha, the clones were all Jango until they became prone to favoritism and nepotism, like a filmmaker sticking his kids in his movies.

What Lucas said no longer matters anymore. In my opinion, if it wasn't on the screen, it's just another bit of EU fluff that can be treated like the food at a Chinese buffet: taken or left as the consumer sees fit.

I guess I was thinking more of a feature than weekly tv series. One of the standalone movies would be a perfect vehicle for a classically animated SW feature. And I was thinking less Don Bluth, more Snow White. Problem is, I don't think there are animator a trained to do that anymore. And I doubt Disney would ever gamble on such an experiment. They will likely play it safe, in the box, and predictable.

I agree with that for the most part. Especially the bit about the EU. However although I would not take it as cannon, I would take whatever Lucas says as something that could possibily happen. But even Lucas changes his mind when it is time to write. Lucas is still on board as a consultant and Lucas is currently Disney's second largest single shareholder after the estate of Steve Jobs so he has influence. After all, he created the SW galaxy so he has a unique insight.

Personaly I support Lucas I everything he has done with the following exceptions. 1. Han shoots first. 2. He should not have directed the Prequels.

Another personal feeling, there is very little I like in the EU. As you know or can tell, I am a Mara Jade fan but I would gladly support her being wiped from the records if it meant a clean slate for the periods before and after the OT. Yeah, I know he's a consultant and holds sway, but I find it hard to believe he'd sell the property, and then start dictating plot points from behind the scenes.

Look, don't get me wrong. I have always thought -- and still think -- that Lucas is a TERRIFIC "big idea" guy. His overarching, general concepts are great. It's when he starts getting into the minutiae that you need people around him to rein him in. It's at that point that he's prone to toss out really STUPID ideas like "What if we added a funny Jamaican duck-lizard to the movie? The kids would love that." And then when he starts answering random questions in interviews like "Where did the A-wings come from, and how come one appears in the Droids cartoon from the 1980s?" that he just starts making up random crap.

"Well, the A-wings were originally the front section of a new type of Y-wing. What you saw in the Droids cartoon was actually a prototype that was an escape module from the Y-wing Mark III. The droids remembered it, and after the battle of Yavin, gave the design for it to the Rebels."

"But in past interviews you said the droids had their memories wiped between Episode III and IV. How would they remember?"

"Uh............Ok. Here's how. All droids have a built in 'failsafe' memory bank, which is capable of acting as a remotely controlled data cache. When the droid returns to the presence of its old master, the data is automatically transmitted. So, when the droids were on Yavin, they automatically transmitted the data to the Rebel technician who'd previously owned them. His name was...um...Owen...Mace....darker....Yeah. Owen Macedarker."

"Um...but you just said the droids GAVE the information to them. Now you're saying they automatically transmitted it."

    "Uh...."

It's moments like this, which must have happened in early production meetings, that led George to actually come up with the scene where Han is bluffing the Death Star guards over the intercom. Think of all the meetings with Gary and Marcia where George threw out what he thought was a brilliant idea, only for them to say "George, that's a really stupid idea," or peppered him with questions he hadn't thought through effectively. Is it any wonder he'd fantasize about shooting them and saying "Boring conversation anyway..."

Eh, I'm not even sure I'd welcome it that much. Particularly given that his "insight" has resulted in the SEs and Prequels. Maybe to get a baseline idea and then play off of it, sure, but not to be followed or taken any more seriously than anyone else.

Like, there's a difference between the role Lucas ought to play and, say, George RR Martin with Game of Thrones on TV. Martin is writing the story while the show's in production. He's also shown to have a pretty solid grasp of his universe and the people in it. Lucas already did everything he was going to do, and then handed it off. Tehre's a wealth of information and "speculation" out there (in the form of EU material), some good, much not so good. Lucas, at this point, I include in this. I don't think he has any special insight in to the Star Wars universe anymore. I think it's bigger than him and his ideas now. I would submit that, at least during the filming of the OT, it always WAS bigger than him and was a collaborative project, inspired by much of what he said. To the extent that the NT and spinoff shows are like that, fine and dandy. He can pitch in an idea, and people can accept it or not. But really, he's just another guy with an opinion to me. And if the last 15-ish years has proven anything, not a particularly worthwhile opinion, in my estimation.

I expect they'll consult with him, but I'd hope they'd just "take it under advisement." Keep what works, ignore the rest.

I am curious to see what characters they use for the heroic action roles. Dodonna, Ackbar, Bail Organa, Mon Mothma do not seem to fit the bill. Depending on the timeframe they pick up the story, will characters like Wedge be old enough to be affiliated in the rebellion? Will we see Major Derlin in all his glory? Will a plucky tween Leia making an appearance? Will new characters fill the role? Will most episodes focus on a group of droids and they brave frog-like leader? Confused? You won't be after this episode of Soap.

I await to see what they come up with.

I haven't followed the CW cartoon, but I can understand Lucas' position there. "No, ALL the Jedi are dead except for Obi-Wan and Yoda."

Thing is, the EU has played pretty fast and loose with this. There's always been the possibility of handfuls of Jedi lurking around the galaxy in hiding. But regardless, I can also see why a cartoon targeted at kids might NOT want to end with the character that the kids are supposed to identify with being slaughtered by her mentor.

While my adult attitude is "Sorry, dude. She's a Jedi? She dies," I get the reasons behind this, and I'd have overruled Lucas, too. It's nice to know people are doing that even if their material is prone to being retconned at a moment's notice.

Doesn't the CW series end before ROTS? If that's the case we never need to see Ashoka die in the series as the Jedi haven't been purged yet.

Personally I like the idea that all of the "official" Jedi (known to the council) are exterminated in the purge which would mean that Ashoka is one of them. The Jedi who weren't recognized by the order could still be around but anyone in the records would have been hunted down IMHO.

There is still a season left that will be released in some way so still a lot of things can happen. Ashoka left the Jedi order. No word on the future of her story but some talk seems to indicate that she will be in the remaining episodes. I speculate that she will join the guy who is fighting a rebellion on his world that she has been interested in. The previous shows sort of build to this happening. After the war, if she stays low key and does not build and flash around lightsaber. There is no reason why she cannot move on. We know Jedi can survive by staying doing this based on obi and yoda. The purge is EU and not true canon so until it is addressed on screen in some way, we have to consider that the empire is content with the results of order 66.
