STAR WARS Rebels new animated series!

Nothing really new, io9 picked up on the Lego story:

New Star Wars Rebels characters revealed, but in LEGO form

I can't believe they are using that thinly veiled Alien movie Narcissus shaped spaceship in the series. I thought someone would have caught how bad and derivative that design was after I saw concept drawings of it. Dreadful design work there.

Looks more like a Falcon retread to me. I mean, yeah, I see the connection to the Narcissus visually, but I don't think that's what they're trying to do. Rather they're trying to create the feel of the Falcon without it just being another YT-1300. Actually, it reminds me more of the YT-2000 featured in X-wing Alliance.

Yes a Falcon and Narcissus. The plan view, engine placement, faceting are very Narcissus. It's blatantly obvious to me and ruins the ship. I could do better...

Yah! And Ezra is a Speed Racer rip off too. Speed Racer has two arms and two legs and a white helmet. Where's the creativity?

:rolleyes

Derivative? Of a great ship design seen once in a great film from 1979? I call that a nice homage and welcome it!

Eh, I can see them keeping a similar design to the Falcon, if the suggestion is that this ship is also built by Corellian Engineering Corp. It's kinda like cars having similar body stylings throughout the years, changing somewhat, but retaining much of the core look.

And, again, I don't think it's Narcissus inspired. I mean, yeah, it looks somewhat similar, but the Narcissus was made in 1979, after Star Wars had been released, and there's nothing particularly unique about rear-facing tubular engines.

I see a Falcon with slightly different engines (closer to, say, the Tantive IV or the unused Corellian gunship design for the Falcon), and a cockpit that has been centered instead of left off-set.

So, yeah, it's not particularly original, but this is the dilemma with doing stuff set in the interim period between the PT and OT -- you have to maintain "the look" but not be identical to what we've seen. I think you could do a different, similarly "utilitarian"-looking style, but my guess is they actually want to evoke the sense of the Falcon, given the emotional connection people have with it.

I also see similarities with the Cylon raider from the Origninal Bsg series, but I think there is enough goodness in there, I see WW2 Bomber in there, also some of the Hind Helicopter, It's a mix of different ideas, which Star Wars is all about.Besides all that , they're against/hiding from The Empire, wouldn't you prefer an old Lada instead of a 2010 corvette if you were hiding in plain sight from the autorities. That ship doesn't look suspicious to the Empire, so maybe that's why it looks so "insignificant".

The next main character whos on the 'Ghost' is a 14 year old....Ezra Bridger......who has......(oh no).....the Force

From TV Guide:

When we meet Ezra, he has little interest in becoming a revolutionary. The suave teen has been living on his own on the planet Lothal and is just starting to learn how to use his mysterious new powers. "To survive, instinctively every now and then when he's in a jam he uses the Force," exec producer Dave Filoni says in the exclusive preview video below. "He doesn't call it that. He doesn't know that's what he's doing. He thinks he's got some abilities that are a little strange every now and then, but they help him out. It's instinctive, it's reactionary."

As Darth Vader and Co. begin to expand their grip on the Outer Rim, Ezra will be drawn into the burgeoning rebel alliance. "With Ezra we see how a kid is reacting to this imperial rule," Filoni tells TV Guide Magazine. "That becomes a big question: What is imperial rule like? We've seen it in the movies with a big rebellion that ends up blowing up the Death Star, but do we just assume that when the Empire took over in Revenge of the Sith it was seen as a bad thing? I would challenge that. It wasn't this terrible thing that came in and was cruel to everyone all at once. It was slow to build its power base and spread out, and then we get to see the rebel alliance it affects, and the repercussions of that tyranny."

Ezra is played by Taylor Gray, who starred in the Nickelodeon series Bucket & Skinner's Epic Adventures. "I'm excited to voice the role of Ezra in Star Wars Rebels but I'm even more excited to be a part of the Star Wars legacy," Gray says. "I can't wait for fans new and existing to come together and see the next chapter in the most legendary tale known in the galaxy."

Filoni chose Gray for the role because his voice wasn't too contemporary. "I don't want to sound like I just went down to the local mall [to cast the role]," says Filoni, who also oversaw the previous Star Wars animated series, The Clone Wars. "There's a rawness to him that feels very authentic. Taylor really seems to be able to occupy the character in this time period of the Star Wars universe. He's a real kid who's out there in the galaxy."

For those hardcore Star Wars fans who might be groaning over such a young protagonist — and Filoni knows you're out there — have no fear, Ezra will be mentored by Kanan, a Jedi who survived the Emperor's purge and is part of the rebel movement. (Freddie Prinze Jr. voices the cowboy-like character.)

And tune in to Disney XD on Monday, Feb. 17 during Kickin' It (6/5c) and Lab Rats (6:30/5:30c) for the premiere of two new teaser trailers for Star Wars Rebels.

Not looking forward to this

why? it would stand to reason that just like at any other time in the galaxy there are people that have the potential to become force users and be discovered and trained to be jedi... (how else would Luke and Leia rebuild the Jedi after RotJ if they're aren't people still being born with that potential?) So to after the purge... there would still be potential force users out there that are now just loose cannons... so being a cartoon marketed to kids (hey what do you know, I was 9 when New Hope came out!) and there would be younger characters for them to identify with and relate too) Sounds to me like Filoni took to developing this characters identity very carefully:
""For those hardcore Star Wars fans who might be groaning over such a young protagonist — and Filoni knows you're out there — have no fear, Ezra will be mentored by Kanan, a Jedi who survived the Emperor's purge and is part of the rebel movement."

Sounds like just another "luke skywalker" type which is fine with me... he has some ability but isn't a "Jedi" People didn't care for Ahsoka either but she turned out to be a great character! (but of course she is "Better than Ezra" ! :D )

Dunno, I just get the feeling that they're going in the wrong direction with this,.....when the title 'Rebels' was reveiled I went.."YES!!!", ....now with more force users being introduced I'm more...."....groan!"

I might be wrong though

well, I guess its gotta be one of those buddy buddy kind of things for the two characters to bond together about... kind of a brotherly or father/son kind of relationship... wait a minute what the hell are they doing? :D ... they are doomed anyway :D
I wouldn't worry too much... its still going to be imperial stormtroopers and rebellious separatists firing blasters at each other.... I don't see this as turning into a big Jedi Knight story like Clone wars was. Force using is still a part of SW and always has been... I see this as an echo of the original "Ben Kenobi mentoring Luke Skywalker" during the exciting adventure of saving the princess type of thing.... "Use the Force Ezra! concentrate! You can do it! .. oh, sorry Ezra I forgot to teach you about that... I guess I'll have to find a medical ddroid at our next stop to fix that wound! Remind me to show you how to do that force trick next time buddy..." :D

I love Filoni's description of his character... "He always wants to get his hands one some of their tech…. take it apart, mess with it. He’s always stealing their helmets… cuz… what kid wouldn’t?!" :D I Love that description! LOL!

I have to agree with Jaitea on this one. I really don't see why there has to be Jedi in this show. The ONLY one I could rationalize would be Rahm Kota; he is already established as a Jedi who survived, he is working with the rebellion. When they keep making new Jedi like this, it cheapens the whole purge. Not only does it make Yoda and Obi-Wan look stupid, it also makes Vader look incompetent for missing so many.

What i am seeing, and I think will also be true when they introduce the the other two characters of the core group, is that they are trying to present fans with what they loved about the OT group without making a carbon copy of the character.

I said "carbon copy"… so old. :darnkids

You are going to have experience, youth, mentor, student, alien, male, female, droid, various attitudes and personality traits, blasters, lightsabers, small ship, large ship… etc...

I think fans who have been wanting a return to OT like stories should feel a little reassured by this

These characters are force-sensative, not like active Jedi , Not even Kanan is all that busy being a Jedi, so I don't worry too much about that. They are struggling with those powers, now that all Jedi Masters have dissapeared all but Obi Wan and Yoda, who have become nothing more than a Myth.I only hope that the Focus won't be too much on them struggling with it.In the Clone Wars Anakin kind of was the main character, but the focus wasn't mainly on him all the time. What I'm hoping with "Rebels" is, in a way the same kind of stories with Rex, Cody, Fives, Heavy in the Clone Wars for instance but ofcourse with Rebel figures, I hope that the side stories will control the series.I'm hoping to see more from Bail Organa, space chases, Imperial key characters, the construction of the first Death Star from another perspective, just a few examples.

if this was about a movie ... a theatrical real action film then I would tend to agree to a point but this is a saturday morning cartoon designed for kids (and the kid in all of us) so.... since it is star wars you can't really leave out any one ingredient that makes star wars what star wars is.
People criticized the Clone Wars cartoon because it wasn't "original trilogy enough" but this one is based on OT style and character types and people are already complaining that its not what they want! :facepalm
New Hope had a defeated Jedi, a teen Jedi potential, a rogue scoundrel, some punky droids with lots of attitude, some piece of junk race car spaceships, blasters, stormtroopers, the empire and a tough spunky female lead... Rebels has a defeated Jedi, a teen Jedi potential, a rogue scoundrel, some punky droids with lots of attitude, some piece of junk race car space ships, blasters, stormtroopers, the empire and a tough spunky female lead... so what's the problem?

and its a HUGE galaxy... why wouldn't Vader miss so many... it may take years to hunt them all down... after all, it was the clones that turned on the Jedi... who says all of the Jedi were generals leading troops? some may not have been in a position to be taken by surprise.

Yeah I never thought Order 66 eliminated all Jedi from the Galaxy, but it destroyed the Jedi Order as an organization.
