Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi (tv series)

These discussions have only cemented my love for those original three films. I loved them growing up and I recognize their simplistic brilliance as an adult. That will never change. I don't fault anyone for loving the new material. I may not understand why, but I'm sincerely happy that people still get enjoyment out of the new stories. I wish I did too, but I can live without. At the end of the day we're all here because we love this thing, even if our ways of expressing it differs. I consider you friends, even if we butt heads at times.
Did someone say Butt heads?

I saw them in concert once...great band!!

my inner child couldn't resist Psab...lol...well said btw

< spit take >

They did? I'd love to see the documentation on that!

I was nine years-old in 1977 and seeing the original Star Wars was a transformative, seminal experience, followed closely by ESB and RotJ. And I loved the prequels. Maybe not in exactly the same way (I wasn't nine anymore), or for exactly the same reasons (again, not nine), but I did love them and still do.

I don't mind people talking about things they don't like and (optionally, but preferably) giving reasons for it. I have, however, grown weary of the ridiculous, over the top hyperbole that leaves legitimate criticism behind and degenerates into nothing more than a creative insult contest. After 20-plus years of prequel-bashing, I still love Star Wars. My enthusiasm for Star Wars fandom, however … has not aged as well.

They did a study at Cambridge as a follow up to the financial cost study they did for the day when The Phantom Menace was released. So many people called in sick, many businesses shut down, just to go see the new Star Wars. I can't recall the exact amount but it was over a billion in lost revenue. So Cambridge did a follow up to see if it was worth it and they found over 90% of people who had seen the movie did not like it. It was also #1 for only a few weeks, versus Titanic that was at number one for 17 weeks.

So if you want data there it is.

Very little of this is true.

To further derail the thread I want to say that I stand by my sincere love for the documentaries and behind the scenes featurettes of all three prequels. I watch them all the time (far more than the films themselves) as they are truly a fascinating look at the making of those movies. They also transport me back to the era in which they were made and all the excitement my friends and I had anticipating seeing the story play out. I have some very happy memories tied with that point in my life and even if I don't care for the movies themselves, I'll always be grateful for the music, the costumes, props, and documentaries they gave us. It was a thrilling time to be a Star Wars fan.

There’s such a plethora of amazing quotes…
“It’s so dense…”
“He’s a funnier character than we’ve had in Star Wars before…”
“It’s stylistically designed to be that way, and you can’t undo that. But you can diminish the effect of it.”
“Yeah, the Jedi kinda cut through these things like butter…”
“There’s a lot of ‘they fight’…”
Beautiful stuff.

Those documentaries are such a treasure, because they’re brutally honest into the process behind those films. Films that work well don’t even let you see so much of the sausage getting made, let alone such deeply flawed and yet uniquely distinct films as the prequels.

I was 8 years old when I saw Star Wars at the drive in. I was 30 when I saw Phantom Menace in the theatre.

There was something magical about each of those movies and their related experiences.

I’m now 53 and I still love Star Wars. There was magic when Mando rescued Grogu in episode 3.

When BB8 rolled across the screen for the first time.

When Rey ignited her yellow lightsaber.

Were there flaws? Sure. As a writer would I have made other choices? Maybe - depends a lot on what the studio demands that you do.

Do I still find enjoyment in them? Heck yes!

Does that make me stupid and low brow with low expectations? To a subset of the fan base- yes!

Do I love everything about Star Wars? No. Do I hate it? Not at all.

Sure, they’re not ever going to be labeled as one of the most influential movies of all time, but then again… that chariot race in Ben Hur went on for WAY too long…

To each their own. And I allow each of you, your own.

On the plus side these days you can have a discussion with friends, acquaintances from All over the planet.. How cool is that!
Opinions are bound to differ but so are our memories of events of things we love/hate and discuss..

I had to watch SW twice in 77 both times with my nan..
The que was so long by the time we got in... Luke was heading for the Cantina!
It was an Easy second watch
I saw it nine times in the 62-week original run it had here in Tallahassee. I know others who saw it many more times than that -- but most of those people lived where they could ride their bicycles to the theater that summer. I had to have my grandfather take me -- it was a 60-mile drive from where I was living at the time. My parents took me once -- the only time in my life my dad went to see a movie with me, and one of only two times I went with my mom (the other time with her was to see E.T.). The last movie I saw with my grandfather was either The Phantom Menace or Disney's Tarzan -- not sure which we saw first, but it was probably the latter. He passed away in late '99.

Couldn't agree more. For the longest time I generally avoided watching documentaries (with some exceptions) and behind the scenes because I was afraid if I saw how everything was done it would take part of the "magic" out of SW. That knowing how the effects were attained when I was watching a film would ruin the experience of being transported to another universe. That may sound silly but it was how I felt.

It was the documentaries on the PT that changed my view. I didn't care for the PT that much so I thought well it might be cool to see how they did some of the effects, what the thought process was and maybe I'll learn something. I couldn't turn away and in some cases it made me appreciate and enjoy aspects of the films more. I now watch the BTS for most science fiction films that I enjoy.

Leia gets home. Mind wiped.

Reva learns of Luke… new focus now on getting him, to re-earn Vader’s attention.

Obi Wan returns to Tatooine to continue looking after Luke, unaware that Reva is now plotting to get him. (Season two)

Ben is back at his job and stealing salmon filets for his pet.
