Next, I had the problem of how to get all these shapes cut in vinyl and stuck to their proper places on the can. I will not be using a measuring tool on a rounded surface, no way. Here's how I'm doing it:
* I removed the template from the trash can.
* Set the template on a piece of styrofoam. Poke a little nail through the paper at every corner of every shape.
* Then I re-taped the template to the trash can.
* Stick a fine point BLACK Sharpie through all the nail holes and make a tiny dot at each.
* Take off the template again and cut out every shape with scissors and an X-Acto knife.
* Use each shape as a template to mark the backside of the vinyl. Scissor cut the vinyl shape. Use X-Acto knife too as needed.
* Stick that vinyl shape to the trash can, lining it up with the little black Sharpie corner dots. There is a dot for each corner of each shape, making alignment a breeze.
I have applied a little of the blue, some silver, and some black, which is hard to see. But that's okay. I don't want the minor shapes to stand out anyway. The most distinctive and recognizable shapes are the blue anyway. This will be a general representation of an R2D2 and not a bit-for-bit copy of him.
