Star Wars movie set den build

The question I have is can you still get into the closet? :) This really looks awesome! Can't wait to see the completed product!

WOW ! You're going all out with this build. I hope that someday I have my own house to do a really cool decor like this ! Great work so far, love that window !

Its looking great man but how does it open?

Everybody wants to know HOW the door opens! I have been too scared to go into my room and take photos of the door workings... since THIS happened!

He seems pissed.

My goodness, this is crazy. If I have something like this in my house...it will be very tempting not to step outside....often...lol

Now I have a shiny round trash can for my den. Hmm, I wonder what might happen with this design? I have some vinyl sheet stock laying around here somewhere. And I have blue and silver and matte black.

Guess what?

Awesome work so far! Can't wait to see more.:popcorn

One of these days I'll own my own house and be able to do cool stuff...

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone! A half hour later and I have a paper template, checking it for size.

And a friend brought over some vinyl scraps.

Next, I had the problem of how to get all these shapes cut in vinyl and stuck to their proper places on the can. I will not be using a measuring tool on a rounded surface, no way. Here's how I'm doing it:
* I removed the template from the trash can.
* Set the template on a piece of styrofoam. Poke a little nail through the paper at every corner of every shape.
* Then I re-taped the template to the trash can.
* Stick a fine point BLACK Sharpie through all the nail holes and make a tiny dot at each.
* Take off the template again and cut out every shape with scissors and an X-Acto knife.
* Use each shape as a template to mark the backside of the vinyl. Scissor cut the vinyl shape. Use X-Acto knife too as needed.
* Stick that vinyl shape to the trash can, lining it up with the little black Sharpie corner dots. There is a dot for each corner of each shape, making alignment a breeze.

I have applied a little of the blue, some silver, and some black, which is hard to see. But that's okay. I don't want the minor shapes to stand out anyway. The most distinctive and recognizable shapes are the blue anyway. This will be a general representation of an R2D2 and not a bit-for-bit copy of him.

I bought that same trashcan a few months ago in anticipation of doing this very thing. I don't suppose you could send those templates my way? The den is epic btw.

This is fantastic. The color changing doors are like a radiology departments light sign for radiation. "Film in progress - Do not enter."

I got a Tardis Trash can for Christmas. Maybe I should start a trash can collection and go for R2 next.

Hey Jedifyfe, great seeing your "can". :thumbsup There is more progress tonight, still under construction. I am becoming efficient at making vinyl scraps, anyway.

More later. Beepity-beep-boop.

Really outstanding work so far. Can't wait to see how things all come together. You've obviously put a ton of thought and time into this and it's great to see passion like this!

best,
Tom
