Star Wars BLU-RAYS in the works!

If he released the original versions he can go to town with his SE version all he likes. I don't care... heck, I may even watch them... but denying movie buffs the choice is just childish, when every other movie comes out with the original and other versions. He simply has no good argument for not doing it, when others can.
As much as I hate to say it, he doesn't need a good argument. "I don't want to" seems simple enough.

I find it some of the people in here complaining to be quite amusing. We have a user who slams others for hating the PT and we have our typical "The PT is garbage" people. You guys don't have to go out and buy this. I am on the side of "Yup, I'll buy it" because it brings HD to Star Wars.

Sorry, just scaning through the list here. The Blu Rays are coming out, Next October (is that for the Celebration sales or October 2011?)
And they are coming with a rubber cat turd or something?
WTF?
I hope they include both versions and the SE versions are further cleaned up, for the higher resolution. I can't wait to see these films again!

Special Edition Box Set comes with a rubber cat turd. Special Edition LIMITED Box Set comes with a rubber BANTHA turd. Er...fodder.

Pretty much this. It's more along the lines of "For pete's sake why NOT put out a clean, anamorphic 5.1EX version of the originals if only for posterity's sake?" For me, it's the "NO! They're MY movies, so you all can SUCK IT!!!" attitude that gets to me. I'd actually be excited to see what cool new stuff he was doing IF I didn't get the sense that he'd rather pull a jedi mind trick and try to convince me "These aren't the films you're looking for."

1.) Clearly you have never had brain freeze. ;)

2.) As said, he can rock out with his...er...lightsabre out on the SEs for all I care. I didn't buy the '04 versions when I heard about the job they did. I only got the '06 re-releases to have an official "Laserdisc Rip" set. Even the least changed of the three (ESB) has BAD color issues for the SEs. Like, really bad. Crappy amateur work. Forget whether you like the changes or hate 'em, the simple fact is that some of the "cleanup" job they did was just half-assed work. I just want the non-SE versions of the originals in an archive format. After that, go to town on the SEs. Turn the rancor into a giant fuzzy bunny. Make Yoda a gangsta rapper. Have Han Solo GET SHOT by Greedo, but be saved at the last second by a clumsy Jar Jar who manages to bump Greedo so he shoots himself. "Ooops! Meesa sooo sorry!" I could care less. Some of it would probably even be cool. I'd be down with seeing the Gilligan Hat scenes from ANH. The radio dramas use that whole "Luke's life before the droids" bit to help establish him. Just give me the originals in a GOOD format, too. That's all I ask.

3.) The PT sucks. And anyone who disagrees with me ALSO sucks and can report to the next train to the Star Wars reeducation camps!!eleventy! MARCH!! ;)

4.) My ice cream IS too cold. Will you hug it to warm it up?

"Objection! The pod race was pretty cool."

P.S. If you dont get it, look it up.

There is absolutely no question or excuse for not preserving and restoring the original, theatrical trilogy in high definition. It's a seminal part of film history and not doing this for Star Wars would be on par with adding digital Nazis into Casablanca or digitally adding more gangsters to the toll booth scene in Godfather and then making only those versions available in high-definition.

It would be a travesty to cinematic history.

These Blu-Ray releases are sure to feature even more "special" changes that will further excuse the ill-conceived, should-have-never-existed prequels. That's fine. As has been said, it's George's property. But him not presenting these crucially important films as theatrically released in the highest definition format with the best restoration technology is at best denying history and at worst trying to rewrite it entirely. This is doing evil not to just his fans and the people who made him as disgustingly rich as he is, but to the entire institution of film and film history.

These movies aren't just disposable pop culture anymore. They're important the same way the Great Train Robbery was or the way Jazz Singer was for bringing spoken dialogue to film or the way the Wizard of Oz was for showing what fantasy and color could be. Imagine these films being endlessly re-edited and butchered and the originals being erased to time out of either ignorance or bitterness. It's not just "the owner's perrogative" -- it's a sin of epic proportions.

Qui-Gonzalez, I totally agree that it's George's baby and he can do what he wants with it without offering any reason beyond "I want to." But with all due respect, it also doesn't mean the millions of fans have to like it or stop complaining about it either. You can complain about the fans complaining but it's not going to stop it.

I mean, do you not want an HD copy of the original versions? If you don't, you're the first Star Wars fan I've met to feel that way but I'm assuming you probably do too, right?

I don't consider myself a 'hater'... at least I don't INTEND to be hater but in all honesty I do resent George's hypocrisy. He's supposedly big into film preservation yet wants to make us forget the original version of his movie which is what we fell in love with. Fans continuing to ask for a nice version is not unreasonable.

Heck, I bought a laserdisc player back in the day JUST so I could get the THX Star Wars set...

I agree. He can do what he likes with any of his movies.
But he cannot display the oscar statue along with 'winner of 6 oscars' on the box if he doesn't include the original cut. His version is simply not the same movie - it even has a different title.
I agree with other comments here - it's important, even historically essential to preserve the original version, from a film point of view.
I don't care what he does with the others, how many changes he makes, tweaks to tie this and that in, make this or that make (to him) sense. All I want to see is the original in HD.

Oh no no...I never said I was complaining about the fans complaining. I said I find it amusing. I still do. There is nothing any of us can do in regards to getting the version of Star Wars we want out of Lucas. He is going to do what he wants to do. That is my only point.

If your railing against it works, then I will eat my words. Literally...if he puts the Theatrical versions of the OT on BluRay, I will write down my words on a piece of paper and eat it. LOL

:lol Yeah, I've got no fear you'll have to do that anytime soon. Thanks for the clarification. I wish millions of fans ranting about it would make a difference but George seems immune to our protests... Even the promise of showers of money won't sway him on this point it seems.

Makes absolutely no sense to me but what can you do? By his resistance to the idea you'd think we were asking him to sell his soul or sacrifice babies to idols. :lol

Frankly, I think the original 97 SE version should be preserved as well. It's a part of SW history, a major event for some people, and the intro of many kids to SW. We need something like the BladeRunner Final Cut set with ALL the cuts included. Including the theatrical TPM and AOTC as well, even if they digitize TPM Yoda in the SE TPM or whatever.

Heck, let's assume they DO make changes. Here's my wish list:

1. At least lose Greedo shoots and Jedi Rocks. and have Ian M. re-record the ESB voice. He sounds like he's stoned.
2. Drastically re-edit TPM to improve the pacing, including cutting large chunks of Panaka, Padme, Ric, and Jar Jar. Lose scads of unneeded scenes like Jar Jar introducing himself to Padme and the commending of R2. Lose Boss N slobbering.
3. Give us a few lightsaber tweaks in the AOTC arena: a couple purple. I can see it's rare, but only ONE? No way. Give a few guys a double blade. Maul has the ONLY one anyone uses? Nah.
4. DRAMATICALLY trim the romance bits in AOTC and ROTS, and the Zam chase as well, just for fun.
5. Add Padme's family, if it doesn't grind the pace to a halt
6. ROTS: work in some of the council of 2000 or whoever they were.
, again if it doesn't slow things to molasses.

I'm still hoping for and official "director's cut" extended version of the OT. Clean up all of the deleted scenes that we've seen and put them in place. I'd even like to see ANH begin with Luke looking up into space to view the space battle. Give me something that I HAVEN'T seen or bought.

I like watching the PT on "Spike" for the simple reason that they add deleted scenes into the running of the movie. Who the heck wants to just go into a "Deleted scenes" section of a DVD to watch increments of movie that has been removed....that's just plain boring. Let me see it IN the running version of the film, or at least have the option to.

We've all seen the original release of every movie and most of us have these on official or bootleg release....give me something genuinely new to want to own and watch with feverish excitement and anticipation. We can all practically "watch" these movies either blind or deaf at this point and not miss a trick or sound. That is boring. With the continuing interest in Clone Wars and the alleged TV live action series going to happen (eventually) why not give the Original movies some really new flair...it's not like tearing a work of art or anything at this point, just a new spin on an old tale...or something like that:confused

Eh'....my 2 cents.

The IMAX version of AOTC was actually not bad! Back then they had to trim the film to fit the reel and if I recall they cut quite a big chunk out of the film which was a lot of the love stuff and side things that didn't make the film flow too well. It was actually a good cut!

Was it 10 minutes they had to cut? might have been more.... 22 seems to ring in my head... I could be way off.... but it flowed better and helped the film.

Yay, I can not wait to buy yet another version of these movies.

Then the special edition 6 months later

Then the gold collectors edition 4 months later

Then the ....
:wacko

I actually hope that they take a pass through all 6 of them and do a "final" edit. Make them as consistent and uniform looking as possible.

...which will still never be consistent and uniform-looking because (A) ANH was shot on different film from the subsequent two, (B) the OT was actually shot on film, (C) the OT used real props instead of CGI everything, and (D) rockin' 70s/80s hairstyles.

I mean, it's a nice thought, but it just isn't possible.

They should make a cleaned up version of the OT with no changes, just techincal clean-up.

Then only make it available to those that attend a triple feature of the PT.

Like that would kill anyone. Likely won't make them like them any more either... may in fact have the opposite effect. **** still tastes like ****, regardless of the reward bestowed after eating it.

They've been working the last 2 years and they still need another 18 months?!?!?!!?

That'll give Uncle George plenty of time to come up with some cute gags that Incredibly Lame Moviemaking can computerize into [what was] one of the greatest movies ever made.

I kid, I kid.
