Star Wars blu ray in September

THEN WHY WOULD YOU BUY THEM?

Because people are sheeple.

Plus realistically a "fan" boycott would be utterly useless.

I've never BOUGHT a single set of SE anything. Yet I own a couple sets folks have bought for me. I usually re-gift them.

I have already captured the films off of an hd broadcast, and then spend hours of my time syncing the audio from my dvds to get better sound on them. I have created my own temp version of the blu-rays based on available content already, but the cable release of the films are not perfect and suffer form compression flaws. I don't think the dvd versions up-converted with a faroudja chip is anywhere near hd (garbage in garbage out). Standard def video is not an option for me anymore. I just want the hd versions badly. I just wish they were better.

Well, I won't be able to revisit all my favorite Star Wars moments. Only the original versions of the OT would deliver that.

I agree with Solo - though the acting in the scene was weak, the Biggs and Luke scene in the hangar is the only added scene that actually ADDS to the movie. Everything else is just jarring *flash* detracting from the overall rest of the movie.

Yes, the Biggs and Luke scene is ok with me, because it was original footage and therefore "fits." I wouldn't object at all if that was the only change/kind of they made.

What I HATE is the SUPPRESSION of the original versions. It's Lucas' pigheaded "They're MY movies! So there!" attitude that really irritates me. I mean, yes, legally, they're his movies. But no, really, they aren't JUST his movies. They're our movies too, and its his unwavering "**** you. I don't care. They're MINE and I'll do what I want with them," attitude that really bugs me. It's the revisionist history, the erasing of the past, that really galls me.

I mean, ok, you want to tinker around and give us your "definitive -- no, this time for real -- at least until I get newer technology to play with..." version of the films? Awesome! I'll be curious to see what goofy crap you add with each new iteration with the same idle curiosity I offer any goofy fan edit. Just give me the old one too. But he refuses to release them. Or if he does, does so grudgingly and with no effort at actual preservation. I mean, let's be honest here. The only reason the '06 "LD rips" edition came out was to combat the widespread ebay piracy of the originals, and really all he did was offer an official version of EXACTLY what you'd get on ebay -- a cheap LD rip stuck onto a DVD. That's it. That's all it is.

So, as long as he refuses to release the originals, I see no point in shelling out cash for yet another fan edit.

Amen... again, well said. I could not agree more.

Mic, I don't think what we're talking about is really a "boycott" per se. At least, when I think of a "boycott", I think of something organized... an intentional effort to sway a company or whoever by an organized effort. I believe what Solo is talking about is, if fans know they aren't going to be happy with the versions offered in this particular set, then why buy it?

I won't be buying it not as effort to "boycott" it but simply because of the exact reasons Solo stated above... I only really care about the original versions so this simply holds nothing for me. If others feel differently and want to buy it, I've got no problem with that in the least.

But then, realistically, it's probably all of the more casual fans that really make up the market for these rather than us here I'd imagine. Sort of like how toys' biggest market are still kids... not adult collectors, y'know?

This is the whole reason it doesn't happen.

Looking at the complete saga blu ray artwork - is that supposed to be Luke walking in the opposite direction (the ghost like figure behind Anakin)?

I'm in the "wait and see" camp. If there is no value added other than the SE in high def and rehashed extras then I'll likely pass. If it turns out that the other features not yet listed really add something I may budge. Could not care less about packaging -- never have -- content is king.

I guess I sort of understand that, but the way I see it, if you've already put in all the effort you say you have...why spend $90 (or more) for mediocre product?

Yeah, I'm not really talking about some organized boycott. I mean, in the end, as consumers, we all pretty much stand alone. You buy what you want, you don't buy what you don't want. I don't want this set, so I'm not gonna buy it, and I doubt I'll buy anything until they come out with something I actually do want (namely: archival OT). I have no illusions, however, about my actions swaying George Lucas so that he wakes up in a cold sweat and say "MY GOD! WHAT HAVE I DONE?!" :)

It just doesn't make sense to me that people say they don't want XYZ, or how crappy the set is and how LFL is shafting everyone again....and then go right out and buy it. If you're that pissed, why pay your money in the first place? Just you, as an individual. I'm sure there are enough casual fans who really WILL be happy with this that it's still gonna be a money-maker, but it's the fans who complain and still buy that confuse me.

I dunno. I think there's honestly a certain level of addiction involved here. Folks are chasing a particular remembered high and hoping that each subsequent release will do it. If it does for them, hey, groovy. For me, that sensation is long gone, except when I watch the LD-rips, and even then it's tinged with irritation at the fact that this is as good as it gets per Lucas' orders. No amount of goodies, documentaries, quality box art, etc. is going to change that for me, unless and until a properly restored non-SE HD version of the OT is released. Knowing that won't happen, I walk away. But part of me thinks that at least a good portion of folks who complain but buy anyway, are still hoping against hope that THIS time it'll be different and Lucy won't pull the football away.

I also am vehemently opposed to "settling" in most circumstances where I don't believe I have to, and when it comes to entertainment, I definitely don't.

I will admit that JUST the letterboxing and no forced 16:9 is close to swaying me. Oddly enough I feel buying JUST the Prequels for Blu-Ray might be my option.

It's really the SEs that bug the crap out of me.

The HDTV caps I have are 2.39:1 and not the forced 1.77:1. I'm sure there are some nice fan edits like Adywan's still floating around on torrents sites if you wish as well. If you want to get your hd fix without feeding the beast.

I'm with you on this bro - power to the people!

Where can you view the original X-Wing shots before Lucas tinkered with the them?

The individual DVD releases have the original versions on the bonus features disc. They are the Laserdisc transfers, not very good quality but the best available for the unaltered versions.

From following all the back and forth, I'm completely lost, so I'll just ask, straight out; is the BR release in true 1080p or just some bumped up dvd resolution?

-Fred

I already own the dvds so I won't be getting them. WHEN HAN SHOOTS FIRST, then I'll go and buy those blu rays.
