Star Wars: A New Hope - question??

Gone but not forgotten.
Okay, so the scene where 3Po and R2 are getting cleaned up by Luke in his garage and the Leia message activates - Luke asks "Who is she?" And 3Po responds "I'm afraid I'm not quit sure, sir. I believe she was a passenger of some importance on our ship." Or something like that - My question is - is 3Po lying? He knows who she is by the way he reacted to the Blockade Runner being attacked - he even says "They'll be no escape for the princess this time." So why not tell Luke? He gets mad at R2 for not playing the entire message for him - yet he's holding back info himself. Or is he?

I don't know what this "A New Hope" thing is... I assume you mean Star Wars? :lol

What can I say? Threepio clearly has selective memory.

I don't think he's lying necessarily. 3PO has a good heart, in a manner of speaking, but he's not the brightest. I don't think he understands that she's a spy. R2 is the brains of the outfit.

"They'll be no escape for the princess this time." Begs to differ. It indicates that:

A- He knows who she is
B- He knows that she's running from the Empire as it's probably happened before.

You're right though, R2 is the brains. Threepio is more of a go with the flow guy. :)

A little bit later when Luke pops off the restraining bolt and R2 ceases playback C3P0 seems like he's covering for R2's decision not to play it back. It leads me to believe he's covering for R2 through most of that sequence in addition to translating.

hes lying to protect the princess.

3po has lied before - "all this excitement has overrun my cohnterparts circuits...id like to take him down to maintenance"

3PO also says he isn't very good at telling stories in that scene, but in Jedi we see he is a great storyteller.

I always took it that he isnt interested in past. He wants to leave that behind and please his new master.

I see your point, but 3PO always strikes me in that film as a "small picture" guy. Doesn't he say something later to the effect that he's just a protocol droid and not very well versed in such things or something similar? We really don't know much about the purpose he served on board the ship. In this earliest encounter with him he's R2's foil and not very brave. 3PO seems to be more of the type that does his job and stays away from things that don't concern him if it will save his butt.

And, yeah, all the over-analysis aside, it's probably really is just sloppy writing. :)

Might be that he knew the princess was on board, but not who that specific woman is in the hologram. Or he might be lying. Or the restraining bolt may be holding him back somewhat. Or he may be acting out of self-preservation, rather than to protect the Princess.

I prefer to think that he knows the princess is on the ship, but not who she is.

C3po does seem to have a short memory though. He doesn't remember who built him, or that he had been to the Lars homestead before (there are probably a lot more, but these two jump out at me)

End of ROTS Organa says have the protocol droid's mind wiped. So everything he experienced up to then was erased.

According the NPR drama, 3PO and R2 were instructed by Captain Antilles to hide the identity of the Princess. So, maybe 3PO was 'beating around the bush' when it came to the hologram of Leia.

Yet he was the one retelling the entire Star Wars adventure with the Ewoks.
