Star Trek V - Communicator

The person who's been planning on doing this for the last several years has been working 93 hour work weeks with the promise of a break at some point. Shame he doesn't get paid overtime or else he could have retired already. I have faith it'll happen.

Actually this person already has the lids done. As was mentioned, just waiting for time to get the comms done.

If it's who I think it is, I have his STIII Comm from the run he offered here a few years back and I knew he had been working on the STV Comm, but as has been said, real life keeps getting in the way. I've wanted one of these forever and always seemed to just miss them when they have been offered.

I have one of the Coyle replicas of the Trek 3 communicator, which is cast from an original prop I think. In any case, the Trek 3/5 comm appears to be just a bit smaller than the TOS comm (or at least smaller than this replica kit I got a few years ago, probably an HMS).

I was really hoping that Rodd.com would offer a STIII Tricorder since they worked with Rich on his Phaser and then did both the Phaser and Comm with HMS, but they never did. Now, unless you get really luckly, it is almost impossible to get one or get one at a price you can afford.

*blows the dust off this thread*

I'm hoping the interest in this piece hasn't died, as I want either this piece or the STIII communicator... Like now. :)

What gets my goat is that the interest is obviously there, but no matter what this piece eludes us all.

The problem is it takes a small investment into having photo etching templets made, then another small investment in have them ran.

We are talking about a run of around forty grills, then investing in making a jig to bend them.

And if your really going for accuracy, you need the grills made in three parts and then solder them together as well.

Then you worry about making the body.

Only two prop makers have done these. I am one of them and it took a order from Universal Studios for their old Star Trek show on the Tour for these coms to help pay for the original set up.

One of the saddest days was when I relished I could no longer work with Rod.com.

Part of the problem was the run around they put me and the other guy to make these.

Three times they asked for a showing of a prototype and three times they put it on hold, and when at last they said yes the deal was too messed up to run. This when on for almost a year.

So the Com three died and soon later did any work with Rod.com.

They just are not all that into props. they seem much happier selling the toy versions now.

That is a shame, as there is clearly demand for the prop.

I know and for my Tricorders but my hands are tied.

Ahh those Tricorders yeah, they are very nice too.

With all the talented people here and on other boards making their own Star Trek props you would think that would be something Rodd.com would want to get in on but their site just sells the things you can get from Amazon like DVDs and calendars and toys.

Rodd.com are really missing out here.

I have some choice words about Rodd.com (they actually botched an order I placed with them a few years ago, and I haven't cared for their business dealings since) but that's neither here nor there.

Bottom-line, it just stinks that this piece (not to mention the Tricorder!) is simply out of reach for the foreseeable future.
