Hey everyone,
I've started re-watching all of the Next Generation episodes and amongst all of the props I've seen thus far, Data's collection of commendations, medals, and various rank insignia piqued my curiosity the most. To me it seems like an interesting prop that had little screen time and an extensive intricate history that (up until the point I currently am in the series) that was not expanded upon in depth. There are references given to what some, if not all, of the medals are meant to represent but again, little history. Because of this and its "one off" nature, I consider it a puzzle needing to be solved.
I've done some limited research and I've come up with a few things. Firstly, this is more or less a piggyback on Hawaiingb's post found here: http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=178327
The post goes into some depth but there are still some pieces of the puzzle missing. Here's what I've gathered so far:
These are screen grabs from the episode

For reference I'm using the position that Picard is holding the shadow box, although the orientation changes in later shots, and #2 and #7 are upside down.

6- United Federation of Planets Pin

7- UNKNOWN
8- Unknown Title BUT, with the information from Hawaiingb's post and some research I've found some reference pictures.

This is a 1988 SOLIX Hexagonal "blinker" Brooch possibly parented by Seiko as a base. It is further accompanied in the shadowbox by a red accent at the upper point of the delta and a silver/gold perimeter.

Now, the bigger question to me is scale. I'm assuming that the shadow box is either 6" x 9", or more likely 8" x 10". Given the assumption, and visual references I ball park the UFP pin at 1.25" x 1", which would scale it with the half size communicator and the slightly larger than quarter size Flag Admiral insignia, meaning the Fleet Admiral insignia is probably right at quarter size putting the Klingon Captain insignia at penny size. Going off that rubric and having no tangible items, I'd guess the SOLIX brooch and the #7 pin are right at 2" tall. That leaves the #2 pin at around 1.5" tall.
So, lets talk about pins #2 and #7. Hawaiiangb made some replicas

If you look at the second reference picture at the top of the post, it looks like there is some gold/brass detailing on the raised portions of both the ribbon and medal pieces of the #2 pin. As for the #7 pin there also appears to be gold/brass detailing on the raised portion of the ribbon as well as the inner background oval. Perhaps this is lighting?

Does anyone have any further references to scale/coloring/pin source/ etc?
