Star trek: The next generation 25 anniversary

Check out the SD / HD comparisons over at TrekCore: TNG Blu-Ray Release. The comparisons are quite striking.

Plus this bit of info: "Visual effects will not be upconverted from videotape, but instead recompositioned."

TNG effects were shot on film, then composited on video back in the day. That's why they look muddy now. For this remaster, the original filmed model shots will be used with new HD composites! This will rawk!

Looking at those comparisons, not only is the model detail much crisper, but also the engine glows look much better. As for the studio footage.. thank god they've got rid of that magenta tint that all the early seasons suffered from!

All 178 episodes of TNG will be transferred to true high-definition 1080p and released in blu-ray format in season sets starting with season one 'later in 2012'

Outstanding.

I'm going to do this just for the heck of it. And to ensure that if the feature gets taken away (or actually works) that I will have it on record here.

BTW why really buy this when the first season is coming right after this?

Numerous reasons. All of the episodes are being re-edited from scratch and a lot of effects that occur in live action segments have to be redone since they're using the raw camera footage. Not to mention the little tweaks here and there for the practical effect shots like the newly implemented lights on the Enterprise warping out and the new planet in Sins of the Father.

This can also be looked at one of many ways. If it sells well, folks will want the entire series (which IS being worked on). It also showcases some of the best episodes that won't be released for quite some time if they're going to do seasons in chronological order. So showcasing one of the best episodes in HD will not only show how good the series will look in HD, but give you a taste at what your potential favorite episodes will eventually look like. I quote Nicholas Meyer.

"We didn't show you much. We don't want to show you much."

We want you to get the sets!

Also, there is a slight bit of bad news regarding the episode "Sins of the Father". During the reediting process, about 13 seconds of footage that was used for this episode was unable to be located, so an upconverted version of the scene will be used. This does not mean the footage is lost, it could just be misplaced. So there's still a chance that the footage will be found once full work goes into releasing the complete series in HD. After all, they're working with raw dailies here!

Identified Missing Footage

I'm waiting for the Extreme Lensflare Edition.

Since JJ Abrams and his creative team are trying to emphasise that Star Trek is all about Kirk and Spock, we shouldn't have to worry about them getting their hands on this material. It's not something they can self-indulge in.

I wonder if the Borg Cube in "Q Who" will still move with its flat side in front rather than its corner like in all other depictions.
