Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Damn right. Allowing that kind of loosey goosey nonsense on any complex vessel navigating dangerous places is a recipe for disaster. And they should be trying to convey a sense of reality, command structure and protocols work to convey that. Lazy, ignorant writers, taking it for granted people just buy into it all now without question. Probably even The Love Boat did better on that! LOL

They write Nu-Pike like he’s the principal at Bayside Junior High School…

Personal log…I’m Lietentant Erica Ortegas…most the time, I pilot the ship—which is cool, but can get boring!”

An actual line from the latest episode…

Wow. The “writing” in this series…

Also…anyone else notice that in Season 2 they’ve abandoned “standalone episode storytelling” (The Original Series) and have pivoted to “serialized storytelling”?

No, what show have you been watching? The consequences/emotional effects, carry foreward, that is to say, characters dont get amnesia every week, but the stories are definitely stand alone.

It’s serialized storytelling that is being described.

I’m not saying that’s right or wrong; it’s just an observation regarding what the series was originally described to be. Maybe I’m missing something…

  • We’re going to do stand-alone episodes. There will be emotional serialization… ” Alex Kurtzman
Maybe I’m misunderstanding the “emotional serialization” concept and why each episode starts with a “Previously… on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” intro and recap…

Also this quote:

"Henry Alonso Myers and myself are trying to serve that… Strange New Worlds is very much adventure-of-the-week but with serialized character arcs." Akiva Goldsman, April 12, 2021

But this was before season one started, so I can't say they originally described it differently. Data had a character arc but that doesn't make TNG serialized.

Kudos (or not) to those who actually finished watching the latest episode. I couldn't. It was utter garbage.
Finished, but took two bites. felt a very dated story and not as good as previous. The only other one I skipped was the season one ep where they went all mediaeval fantasy. Looked boring

I look forward to the “musical” episode…

Like McCoy was in TOS when he makes xenophobic comments about vulcans? Or the times he was openly insubordinate when Spock was in command?

That’s a false equivalency on a lot of levels, my friend; let’s be honest…

I am trying to recall any episode where Chekov or Sulu back-talked whomever was in the center seat…at most they may have respectfully voiced healthy challenge to an order, in a respectful way that was in-line with military protocol, but never did they demonstrate the lack of professionalism displayed by Ortegas…or the SNW bridge crew overall.

Being openly insubordinate to your superior officer and openly making bigoted jokes at their expense is far more egregious than being casual and jokey with a superior officer. However, both were tolerated, and to pretend like the one isn't worse than the other is dishonest.
