Star Trek: Picard

well ive just seen ep1 and low and behold just as i feared, for me its another kurtzman garbage fest,
and with him producing and writing, its NOT startrek, as yet not what i want to see,
i grew up on tng\ds9\voy, a massive passion\love of mine, so i "used" to be a trekkie,
it might be a bit harsh after 1 episode, but if truth be told im very disapointed, and i absolutely detest what the last 11 years has brought us,
Imo it should of completely ignored the prequel "kelvin"rubbish, and be an actual continuation of Tng\nemesis,
it's not as bad as discovery, but it has the whiff of it and is now contaminated by those god aweful films,
theres already been an overtly eye rolling swish swoosh fight scene and slowmo explosion, and im pretty sure we're a whisker away from someone
swing kicking a warp core into alignment, or something just as silly,
and it just seems completely dumbed down, either picard has advanced irumodic syndrome and he dosn't know what hes doing,
or he's questioning everything like its his first day,
and being a retired admiral, no doubt with some clout and access still, im sure he would know where b4 is and what happened to him,
i wont go on and on, but im 100% agreeing with that Darren Franich review,
i think the only thing i quite liked was the opening seen, i dont think its worth a prime membership just for this,
very doubtful i'll stick with it, maybe the hope that after all this i can see picard utter the words,
compter end program and then walk off the holodeck,
or maybe Q can pop up and say this was another test,
maybe its good for others, but not so for me

I went in with an open mind and hoping for another binge worthy sci-fi show.

Why can’t they make a Star Trek anthology series like The Orville?

They already make Discovery like the Walking Dead, i.e. just one season long episode.

The problem with this format is once you see the season then why would you ever go back a rewatch one particular episode. Does anyone ever go back and watch an old Walking Dead or Discovery single episode?

I have a question

So synths are illegal right?

Why is B4 just sitting in a box. In the middle of the floor of a shopping mall? I mean room ?

It was a fairly average episode which is a shame as I've always been excited after watching the pilot episodes of the other Trek series, TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT.

It's unusual that it wasn't a double episode as the other pilots were with Picard's premiere only 46 minutes long.
But then given they're saying this is a continuing story I suppose it didn't need a double length opener.

Dahj calling her boyfriend "dude" and him responding with "that's pretty cool", what the heck was that? It was too contemporary.

It would be like having a teen drama set in present day and one of the characters speaking in olde English. "Brianne, d'ost thou have Chad's address?"
This is the end of the 24th century not 2002!

The very plain two ringed necklace was unremarkable but was fawned over like it was the most amazing piece of filigree this side of the alpha quadrant.

Picard getting blown backwards at least 15 metres across a concrete surface then waking up at home on the sofa. What the heck? As a former Admiral surely he would be entitled to medical care at Starfleet or at least a civilian hospital. Why didn't Starfleet security want to speak to him and take a statement?

The weird tractor beam 3D printer replicator can be written off as an "aesthetic" choice on the part of production even though it isn't how any replicator has been shown to work in any other series.

The other thing this series seems to lack is a sound designer. I noticed it in the 1st episode of Discovery, I could just about get through, too.
They've taken sound effects from disparate series and seasons and thrown them together to try and make it sound like Star Trek.
The replicator scene in Dahj's quarters had the DS9 hailing frequency sound thrown in for good measure with all the random beeps.

It's as if the team just downloaded the basic available stock sounds from Trekcore and dump them in a mish mash overlaid whenever they need a sound effect that they think is accurate but they don't put the effort in to check whether it's accurate. It's like a rushed fan film.

The whole B4 scene where
Agnes relays to Picard that you can apparently recreate an entire positronic brain INCLUDING memories from a single "positronic neuron" is more of the handwaving fantasy science that the current regime default to.

I'll wait until Seven turns up to decide whether to give any more of my time to this new series.

The cinematography was nice, the vineyard location was lovely and the Starfleet Quantum storage facility was interesting.

Anyone else feel like that public transporter service Picard used to get from France to San Francisco look more like the Floo network from Harry Potter rather than a carefully operated system that converts you into an energy pattern at one place then reassembles your atoms at another?

How does it even function?
There are no signs to say which location each gatewill send you to, no control panels to enter co-ordinates if the gate's end destination isn't fixed. No warning indicators to suggest the gate might be in use or there is a malfunction and could be unsafe to use.
Maybe it's telepathically controlled!

What would happen if someone accidetally walked through the gate? Let's say your child wanders off when you're having a catch up with the Andorian ambassador you used to serve with.

I think these beaming gates are another JJ Trek example of they're there because "they look cool and futuristic".

One would think that given all the things Picard has seen, in his lifetime, that would be classified as “unusual”, a simple necklace with 2 silver rings would hardly catch his eye.

If Picard thinks that this objectively very simple necklace design is “unusual” or “extraordinary”....

Then this very average 21st century necklace...

I'll keep an open mind for a bit longer, but that right there is where my gut first started giving me bad feelings. And I'm not liking the parallels to the current state of the world. There's enough real angst on the news every night that I don't need to be reminded of it in Star Trek.

I do think the intro theme for the show excellent.

I would agree that the visuals are pretty good but the musical theme itself isn't strong, it doesn't say "Star Trek".
Apart from that very brief play out of a couple of notes of Jerry Goldsmith's score, the Picard theme could be from any generic drama or show.
It isn't memorable, you wouldn't hear someone hum or whistle it and straight away say, oh that's Star Trek.
Even after watching the episode I couldnt remember the theme music it was that bland.
It saddens me that Star Trek has been dumbed down so much since Bad Robot took over. I'll try a few more episodes, see what it's like when Seven shows up and if the Troi and Riker characters are faithful to their portrayl.

I love how some people are writing this off after a single episode when TNGs first 2 seasons was some of the most cringeworthy Trek ever made. And look what it became after that. Give them time to build the story.

After being burned by 09 Trek then the poor Wrath of Khan rehash, I couldn't even be bothered with Beyond and Discovery is so bad that I couldnt even watch a whole series.
Hoping they would have got the bad writing out of their system and they have Kirsten Beyer as a guiding hand, I was hoping for a return to form.
If they wrote better stories we wouldn't be having this discussion.
We'll see how the rest of Picard series one goes.

The creators of Star Trek: Picard are probably kicking themselves that they didn’t create a Baby Locutus as Picard’s adorable sidekick...

Could they get the plush toys out by Christmas?

I giggle, but it’s so dumb that it absolutely could happen.

That scene with Picard and Dahj outside the archives is the 2nd worst point in the episode. I think that actress is terrible. Anyone else notice Picard's little gasp/whimper at the 31:55 mark? Makes him seem really weak and scared. The worst part for me was once Alison Pill came into frame. These female characters seem to have zero charisma while speaking that crap dialog. Maybe it's not their fault. They're working with what they're given.
