It was a fairly average episode which is a shame as I've always been excited after watching the pilot episodes of the other Trek series, TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT.
It's unusual that it wasn't a double episode as the other pilots were with Picard's premiere only 46 minutes long.
But then given they're saying this is a continuing story I suppose it didn't need a double length opener.
Dahj calling her boyfriend "dude" and him responding with "that's pretty cool", what the heck was that? It was too contemporary.
It would be like having a teen drama set in present day and one of the characters speaking in olde English. "Brianne, d'ost thou have Chad's address?"

This is the end of the 24th century not 2002!
The very plain two ringed necklace was unremarkable but was fawned over like it was the most amazing piece of filigree this side of the alpha quadrant.
Picard getting blown backwards at least 15 metres across a concrete surface then waking up at home on the sofa. What the heck? As a former Admiral surely he would be entitled to medical care at Starfleet or at least a civilian hospital. Why didn't Starfleet security want to speak to him and take a statement?
The weird tractor beam 3D printer replicator can be written off as an "aesthetic" choice on the part of production even though it isn't how any replicator has been shown to work in any other series.
The other thing this series seems to lack is a sound designer. I noticed it in the 1st episode of Discovery, I could just about get through, too.
They've taken sound effects from disparate series and seasons and thrown them together to try and make it sound like Star Trek.
The replicator scene in Dahj's quarters had the DS9 hailing frequency sound thrown in for good measure with all the random beeps.
It's as if the team just downloaded the basic available stock sounds from Trekcore and dump them in a mish mash overlaid whenever they need a sound effect that they think is accurate but they don't put the effort in to check whether it's accurate. It's like a rushed fan film.
The whole B4 scene where
Agnes relays to Picard that you can apparently recreate an entire positronic brain INCLUDING memories from a single "positronic neuron" is more of the handwaving fantasy science that the current regime default to.
I'll wait until Seven turns up to decide whether to give any more of my time to this new series.
The cinematography was nice, the vineyard location was lovely and the Starfleet Quantum storage facility was interesting.
