Star Trek Into Darkness (Pre-release)

Are there any decent pics yet of that phaser Kirk was holding?
I'm sure there will be some cool looking stuff.
I wonder if they'll bother doing a new tricorder, that could be fun.
I like tricorders.

Don't forget the Tholians!

Seriously, these living crystals can spin webs of energy... IN SPACE! I do love the fact that the original series brought us some pretty awesome alien designs where as later series with bigger budgets and better technology resorted to mostly facial bumps.

Hey, at least they bothered to show the Tholians again. I thought it was pretty cool. Seeing it explode was pretty cool too.:lol

I never noticed it before but that Tholian is quite fashionable. If you look at him the right way you'll see he's wearing a blazer and a v-necked sweater under it.

Hello Folks

I just want to see some good closeups of those JJ - Up Gunned Klingon Cruisers!!! Probably will not happen but it would be NICE!!!

I like Cumberbatch, but he doesn't have the pecs for the part.

Ok, so this is a little off topic, but I'll swing it back around...

One of the things that has always bothered me about Superman is how muscular he is. He has super strength on this planet and depending on the era can lift anything. How does he challenge his muscles enough to grow them?

This is why I always liked Reeves' Superman in the films. He looks athletic and definitely had some bulk, but he wasn't freakishly huge/cut as he's often drawn in the comics.

I think this same logic can be applied to Khan. He doesn't have to be muscular to be genetically superior and stronger. He could be relatively thin, but with excellent muscle tone and muscle efficiency that makes him superior.

Besides, I wouldn't exactly see Khan as the type that wastes his intellect pumping iron.

Also, Montalban was definitely fit in the original series, but I don't recall his chest being bulked up nearly as much as he was in the film. This could be explained be the hard work he had to do on Ceti Alpha to survive.

Long story short: Cumberbatch's physique isn't a concern for me. The fact that Khan wasn't an English dude is. ;)

I'm willing to place a bet that it's Khan but would be thrilled to lose that bet.

Guess we'll have to wait and see!

If the idea is to bring Khan into it (like you said, we'll have to wait and see), then my ideal scenario is that this film sets up Khan for the next.

The problem with using Khan, for me, is if JJ Abrams plays by the rules he set then he CANNOT fundamentally change that character. He existed BEFORE the timeline split. It could be possible that he's discovered and revived earlier, and perhaps not even by the Enterprise crew, but he still has to be basically the same person because Nero wasn't supposed to have altered history prior to his arrival.

(Sure, sure, I wouldn't expect another actor to try to mimic Montalban's performance - but the fundamentals of the character, including nationality, should be maintained.)

The alternative is for Abrams to admit that he views this as reinventing the entirety of Star Trek from scratch and not just a reboot of the adventures of the Enterprise crew.

Well according to greatwazoo42, turning Khan into a british guy makes sense because India had Britons in it..... :confused

Here's the convoluted way this makes sense:

The new timeline progresses to the time of Picard and the Borg.

The Federation is on the verge of defeating the Borg, so the Borg travel back in time to assimilate the humans in the past. Since this is a NEW timeline, the Borg wind up going back to a different time.

This time, the Borg go back to pre-Eugenics wars.

While fighting the Borg in the past, Picard has an affair with the woman who was the genetic scientist that created Khan. She was so impressed with Picard that she decided to surreptitiously use his DNA in her experiments.

Thus, Khan is an English dude.

Boom! Screenplay DONE!

:lol

Plus, as we all know, Englishmen make for the best villains. Most, if not all, of our best cinematic villains were either British or spoke with a English accent so it's only fitting that the new Kahn is being played by a Brit so we can get an authentic evil English accent so that he sounds more evil. :cool

Let's don't forget the Romulans...

Well I did say "well known" villains. :lol

The Romulans, Gorn, Tholians, etc. are known within the geek world we inhabit but don't have much name recognition outside of it.

I think characters like the Gorn or Tholians are one trick pony's. How many times can you fight a slow moving lizard with a lisp or get slowly caught in an energy web? As for the Romulans I think they peaked with Balance of Terror and have been going downhill ever since.
