That's weird, I thought the last film had a lot of scenes taking place in outer space. Did it take place on Earth? Maybe I saw a different Star Trek: Into Darkness? The Canadian International release?

It's also funny that the highest grossing Trek film before Abrams was Star Trek IV, which truly did take place on Earth for 90% of the film.

I predict that I'll be seeing nuTrek 3 opening weekend. :)

Despite the fact that the crew do go to two alien worlds, they're not all that essential. The opening planet was just a setup for Kirk and Spock's friendship issues, and Qo'nos was a cheap way of finally putting those klingon outfits made from the last movie to use. There is no followup with the Klingons after capturing Khan, nor does there seem to be any repercussions of the crew invading their home world by the time the movie is over. But a good chunk of this movie seems to have a lot of scenes that take place on Earth. We get the long, drawn out London bombing, Kirk being demoted, Kirk having a talk with Pike at a bar, Khan attacking starfleet headquarters, Kirk and Spock talking to Marcus in his office, Kirk contacting Scotty at a bar, the Enterprise heading back to Earth with Khan in tow, two ships having a standoff close to Earth, the Enterprise entering Earth's atmosphere, the Vengeance crashing into San Francisco, the chase through San Francisco, Kirk's recovery in an Earth hospital and finally the memorial scene at the end. I guess the only good news to come out of this announcement is the fact that Damon Lindelof isn't involved with the writing for the next movie, since he was the one who not only pushed for Khan to be the main bad guy but for Earth to play a more pivotal role.

All of which amounts to about half an hour (give or take a few minutes) of the movie. That's over an hour and a half of movie time away from Earth. Not to mention 3/4 of the stuff you brought up was setting up the story

It is more than 30 minutes but since I have no legitimate way of proving it until it's released on video, I'll just leave with a comment that gets to the point. I find Earth to be a boring place, especially when it's featured so prominently in a movie based on franchise that's known to hardly feature it.

I think we have already determined that Trek film history features Earth prominently. You need to qualify the television content as being distinct from the film content. Your comment regarding Earth is only correct as it applies to the TV, the films are a different story and since we are discussing the films....

Both TNG and DS9 featured several stories on Earth. All TOS fims (1 -6) had secenes on Earth.

I have no problem with folks who didn't like the movie. To each their own. What I find interesting is the reasons generally provided.

When Trek 2 came out a lot of fans were unhappy at the time. Many felt it was too militaristic and relied too much on space batles. Not to mention it wasn't even an original idea but a sequel to an episode. TWOK has bad science, bad continuity, is un-original and filmed by a director who was never a fan and in fact has openely critisized Trek. (just for the record I love TWOK)

Having stories take place on Earth isn't the problem. Constantly going back to Earth as the number one place where everything happens and is the number one target of the bad guys is the problem. It's three films in a row now where we have Earth being targeted by the bad guys (Nero and Khan both specifically target San Francisco). Those episodes of TNG and DS9 that take place on Earth are few and far apart from each other.

I don't think ST:ID completely rips off TWOK. I think it completely rips off the last movie. Trek09 and ST:ID accomplish all the same plot points and character goals like the last movie did and both end the exact same way. I'm pretty much convinced that you can skip ST:ID entirely and just jump into the next movie without consequence.

"But Jeyl, you hater of all things that are good and decent. Won't the audiences get confused in terms of why there is a Carol Marcus on the bridge if they skip ST:ID?"

I do think it's a fair point that some of the character growth moments, especially with Kirk, are revisted in ST:ID. I saw it as more of a continuation than out wrire lets do it again.

Back to the Earth centric story, again Earth was in jeopardy in TMP and Trek IV. This is a common theme in Trek films. It is one of the reasons I prefer the series, they can do so much more and truly explore.

I enjoyed ST:ID quite a bit and I'm looking forward to a sequel. However, like you, I do hope we get to see the Enterprise out there, exploring strange new worlds.

We go from Kirk realizing that Spock Prime does feel with a very shocked realization "So you do feel??" and confirming that NuSpock feels as well when he makes him angry. In the second film, Kirk is back to calling NuSpock an emotionless robot convinced that he doesn't have any emotions. And wouldn't you know it, Kirk learns again that NuSpock does indeed have emotions when he talks about mind melding with Pike. It's like everything that the characters learned in the last film didn't happen at all.
