Re: New STAR TREK 3

OK, 2014 is likely a bit aggressive...

Co-writer Robert Orci in an interview at Comic-Con puts the kibosh of Zachery Quinto’s enthusiastic statement that the next movie will start filming in 2014, and that J.J. Abrams will probably still direct. It looks like the production team is still trying to figure out the logistics. Orci says, "I'd love to have J.J. back. We're still talking to Paramount about what the scheduling might be and if we can all do it together again, but yeah I read that too and I was like, 'Whoa, does [Quinto] know something I don't? I'd better call him.' He owes me a call." [Zap2It]

Re: New STAR TREK 3

It's going to be interesting to possibly have some REAL Star Trek'ish people on board...Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz. If they worked with Roddenberry on Andromeda then we may have a chance for a good (better?) film with a more Rodd feel to it. Not to say ST1 and 2 were bad, in fact I liked them, but some fresh air would be nice.

What can I say, I liked Andromeda. It felt like Trek lite. :lol

Re: New STAR TREK 3

Just you wait till 2015 when the Enterprise's warp engines go into an imbalance during warp flight and the resulting time-dialation-worm-thread throws them into incredible speeds, well past warp 50. Scotty is scared to even shut the engines down, not knowing what will happen. Spock informs Kirk that if something is not done, they are likely to hit a sun and burn up. Kirk orders that they drop out of warp and when they do, they come face to face with a Star Destroyer and are escorted to it by a squad of tie fighters.

I did too actually. Good low budget fun. :)

Re: New STAR TREK 3

Can you imagine Star Trek and Star Wars going toe to toe in 2015???
Don't say that! The Suits at the respective studios will hear you and make sure both movies are released on the same day thinking that will finally end the old "Which is better, Star Trek or Star Wars?" debate. :facepalm

:D

Although I don't think one is better than the other, Episode 7 would CRUSH Star Trek.

Only if it's not worse than the Prequel Trilogy movies. ;)

By the way (and I think we've had this conversation before), like you I don't think one is better than the other. And I cannot understand why some people feel the need to choose between the two. I like them equally, so I enjoy both of them.

Pretty low bar! :lol Although even if it was AOTC bad I don't think Trek box office would come close.

They're two very different beasts that each fill a different entertainment need! It's like comparing apples and oranges. :)

Re: New STAR TREK 3

Sounds reasonable...

Star Trek 3
Simon Pegg is optimistic the third film could be shot in 2015 so that it would be released in 2016, the franchise’s 50th anniversary year:
“I would hope so. It would mean we could get it out for the 50th anniversary, which would be extraordinary… obviously, it’s all in the hands of the sci-fi gods so with a bit of luck…”

Re: New STAR TREK 3

Sorry Karl but nothing good will come out of the franchise untill the Mount hands it over to somebody else

Well this ought to cheer you up. It seems that the Mount has decided NOT to hire Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz to write the third movie, instead choosing to go with..... Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci again.

I have a feeling that the third film will be about a bad guy seeking revenge against the Federation, Kirk's ability to command is questioned, Spock must learn to deal with his human emotions and everything that Kirk and Spock do while doing their job will create this insurmountable tension that threatens their SUPER TERRIFIC friendship. It's funny how one of the most iconic friendships in science fiction history seems to be less friendly than the Magneto and Xavior friendship. Sure, they might come up with something a little bit different, but there's no denying that no matter how many times they've promised that the crew were heading into deep space in the last two movies, the film will most likely still be set on Earth. Gotta relate to an audience who pay to see a space movie who don't want to go into space.

Yep, that's indeed in line with the thinking of the majority of the general population, who would care less about space and exploration.

Despite its rehash of old plots, I enjoyed Star Trek Into Darkness mostly cause I've been able to accept that this new movie franchise is not really akin to the old Star Trek series/films that I grew up with and it will never match up to them. And though they are showcasing modern iteration of beloved characters (which is frankly the only reason most fans are drawn to these new movies), these characters can't truly emulate the bond and history of their original counterparts. But if in the next follow up, if the story doesn't really embrace the space exploration route, I hope that is the end of the new movie franchise. Instead, Star Trek should get back on television.

Now I am wondering whether it would have worked if the new Star Trek movies featured all new characters who were not related to the old series/films in anyways, something like the series Enterprise, though set little further in the future instead of the past. Audience initially wouldn't be as invested in the new characters as they are now, but it would become more easier to accept them and the world they are established in.
