Star Trek Beyond

Re: New STAR TREK 3

I just checked out JD Payne and Patrick McKay on IMDB, am I reading this right? Neither of them have any writing credits? So we get Orci directing AND writing with two guys who haven't written anything before? I mean, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll suck, but I do think it gives Orci an overwhelming ability to overrule them on everything. Meaning the movie will essentially be completely made by Orci. Not looking good.
Come, come, Mr. Risu. Young minds, fresh ideas. Be tolerant. :D

It does seem unusual that Paramount would trust one of their biggest cash cows with people who don't have a proven track record.

Re: New STAR TREK 3

I really don't care what they do with the next movie I just wish they wouldn't call it Star Trek. The new movies bear so little resemblance to what came before it's just a joke. Star Trek was definitely broken but they "fixed" it by making it not Star Trek.

Re: New STAR TREK 3

On the other hand, you'll never make that comment watching Chris Pine either!

Nor will you say "Hey look... it's Jack Ryan".

But then again... you could look at Kirk like 007. Who do people identify as James Bond today? Is it based on that era that the actor portrayed the role? I still have a hard time not thinking Connery even though I liked Lazenby, Brosnan and Craig a lot. Dalton, not so much. Moore, to me, was like the Adam West of James Bonds.

This right here. Yes. Now that ST(I)D is free on Netflix (or is it Amazon Prime), a mere year or less after release (my measure of a film's insignificance, I still can't bring myself to watch it. CinemaSins' EWW review was the final nail in the coffin for me.

A trained Rhesus Monkey would be a better choice that that no-talent hack Orci.

Oh, yes. Trek really shares the blessing and the curse of the Bonds. Either they crackle with wit and inspiration (Casino Royale ST II TWOK) or deflate like a used condom (Moonraker, ST V TFF).

Moore, to me, was like the old leather suitcase of James Bond.
Odd that Moore is older than Connery, but replaced him as the "younger, hipper" Bond.

Fans of the series, generally, can accept any good performance as the character. I can watch Connery, Lazenby, Dalton, Brosnan, and Craig and accept them all as Bond. Moore I have a hard time with, just because it seems like he's always ready to turn to the camera and wink. That said I was born long after Connery stopped brandishing the PPK but he'll forever be the true James Bond in my books. Much like Shatner will always be the REAL Kirk.

Casual viewers though will absolutely identify with whomever they grew up with. I'm convinced that nostalgia is the only real reason anyone likes Roger Moore as Bond. :lol

The Moore era was when I saw my first James Bond movie, The Man With the Golden Gun. I was 13 years old and, having only a vague awareness at the time that there had been previous Bond movies, I couldn't understand why Bond was so popular. I subsequently saw The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker because a friend wanted to see them, but I barely made it through the first half hour of Moonraker before I decided I'd never watch another Bond movie. Not long after that I saw Thunderball on tv, and I finally understood what all the fuss was about. I still think Live and Let Die was a good first outing for Moore as Bond, but everything that came after was rubbish.

Re: New STAR TREK 3

What the Moore films needed was more cowbell... and masculine black women.

Re: New STAR TREK 3

What purpose does having gay characters serve besides pandering to another demographic/audience...

Re: New STAR TREK 3

IDIC and Roddenberry's celebration of that would include all manner of humanity, though evolved into the fictional idealized future.
However....
Depends if they make it incidental to a character, or beat people over the head with it in a politically correct fashion.
Or take an established character and switch orientations. Hey, check it.... Sulu is really gay now like the original actor.

Given it's NU-verse Trek, who knows, they may jump the shark that way.

Re: New STAR TREK 3

Yeah, but the whole idea behind social commentary in Star Trek is to do it by allegory. So people can see the underlying issues without their judgment being clouded by preexisting biases. Whats the point otherwise?

Indeed, though as far as gay acceptance, X-Men seems to have that well in hand right now with it's mutants, I think Trek would be better off to say, ok it's diverse in the future, it's incidental, we're taking humanity to the stars, a trek in fact.

Re: New STAR TREK 3

It serves the purpose of fulfilling a promise Gene made to the fans about 30 years ago...

There has been gay people on earth since the dawn of civilisation, I think its safe to say they will still be around in another 300 years, and it never did Buffy or Doctor Who any harm.

Re: New STAR TREK 3

One could imagine gay characters have already been on all the shows and films as there were plenty of characters that their personal lives simply
were never portrayed.
