ST: Strange New Worlds Canceled

They’re literally just flat-out mocking Kirk and Shatner, now. Remember when TNG and DS9 paid loving homage to TOS? This does not come from a place of love and respect.

Are we watching the same show? Or is the baggage just that big?

I would say that SNW has taken great care to show much respect for Kirk the character, down to accommodating some of his backstory even. I'll give you the Sam Kirk thing, but that's minor.

But most importantly, this show has taken steps also to show us how much better a captain Kirk is over Pike when it comes to diplomatic relations. In S01E08, the point of the entire episode is that Pike's diplomatic style would have plunged the Galaxy into neverending war. Kirk's "shoot first" mentality was objectively shown to be the right approach.

That's respect.

The whole episode, in fact, was a love letter to TOS "Balance of Terror." It was very much "loving homage".

Of course you did…you seem to be something of a contrarian in these threads, to be honest.
I mean, if talking about how I enjoy things that most of you can't seem to find anything positive in is contrarian then, yeah I guess so? I'm not even trying to play devil's advocate, just being the guy alone in the corner who is like "Hey, some of us think parts of this show are fun and ok." Clearly an unwanted viewpoint by the majority. Whatever. It's still a fun show, even if it doesn't spend all its time glazing Kirk and TOS.

I'm here with you Paul. I enjoy the show quite a bit. I'm not expecting Shakespeare, and having quite a bit of fun in the new sandbox that SNW is.

I would have thought (and frankly still do think) that Trek isn't a monolith anymore. It's big enough that it can be different things. SNW isn't trying to be TOS or TNG or DS9, even though there are times when it pulls from those sources for vibes.

Absolutely. I love TOS & TNG especially, DS9 and VOY are meh with lots of problems, and I absolutely despise Enterprise and Discovery.

And there's nothing wrong with that. I still call myself a Star Trek fan.

I've never cared much for TOS (which discounts my opinion among so many here), but I love TNG and DS9. I think it's very similar to the video game folks who would say your first Mario Kart is the best, or your first Final Fantasy. Or maybe the one you played when you were 14 is the best to you. My point is that oftentimes the iconic piece of media that catches you in your formative years is the version you love most forever, because that's the way your neurons are linked now.

In the capitalist hellscape we've created where all media is owned by corporate conglomerates that are interested in capitalizing on the IT they own, of course everything is being reiterated on indefinitely, how could it not be so? Corporations didn't get to the point where they own everything by leaving money on the table. Thus, we get endless versions of the franchises we're fans of. And in an endless stream, there are undoubtedly going to be versions that don't hit for everyone.

There are dozens of us, I tell you, dozens!

Of course his NotKirk was over the top, this was their one chance to let Wesley do the super stereotypical Shatner. The parody is what TOS is in the popular consciousness, cardboard sets, bad acting, brain stealing, etc.

The part that I thought wasn't quite right was Uhura's Agent character's monologue on how important NotTrek is. It was too earnest and didn't match the parody show we just saw. probably laying it on too thick too even for a meta commentary.
