SS Buck Rogers Starfighter

Yeah, I don't know if I'm going with the beige colors mentined yet either, I may do it how I see it.

How are you tackling the cockpit??
Are painting the cockpit then glue and putty in the canopy?

Lynn

No, I really don't have much of a seam at all. Here is the first coat of black wash. I did it lightly as I don't want it too dirty. I still have to airbrush the different colored panels which I'll do next weekend. Then I'll add the decals, then the final weathering will be done with pastel chalks.
The pilot and canopy are only temporarily attached for the photo. I'll finish up the engines next weekend too .

Hey Saintg,

Did you get my PM I sent a few days ago regarding the kit I ordered?

You mentioned it was possibly going to ship on the 23rd of October.
Just wondering if it did go out or one is still in process as I
haven't heard back.

If you can let me know either way, that would be great. Thanks.

Well, guess I jumped the gun on my post. The package was waiting for me when I
got home. This is a beautiful casting. Nothing was broken and it was very well packed.

You guys did one bang up job on this thing. I can't wait to get it done.

Thanks for everything. :thumbsup

Actually, I had a real hard time painting it so I gave up. I had to strip it down .I commissioned Lee Malone to finish it for me... So it should turn out awesome.. I'll stick to painting 1/1 busts and figures instead.

Has anyone else started or finished this bad boy??

I've got mine almost fully painted now, I gotta take off my masking on my panels so I can do my final color coat.

I can then add the pilot, put the canopy on, decal her up, and then start to weather it.

I kind of find it hard to believe no one else has started theirs yet.. :D

Come on, lets see them..

My paint master is still in the works . . . Pics forthcoming in the paint guide I am still working on. Paint guide will include which panels are what . . . including those that have been previously though to be NOT paneled but ARE base on the REAL deal photographs.

I will post this little bit from the guide, listing the paints I'm using, so you can grab them, most are either at Home Depot or wally world, and your local hobby shop. You'll note that most are gloss, for decals sake, and then once you weather you can shoot your dullcoat (or I'd recommend a matte actually) down and weather some more, and seal that too . . .

"Here are the following primary Colors you will need to paint up your ThunderFighter, and the paint key for the next few pages:
Base Hull - Rustoleum “Painters Touch” #1996 Navajo White
Light Hull - Krylon #1504 Ivory Gloss
Grey Hull - Rustoleum “Painters Touch” #1994 Almond
Engine Base - Model Master FS15042 Dark Sea Blue
Engine Highlight - Model Master Acryl 4749 Engine Gray
Cockpit/Cannons - Any brand DARK Gray Primer
Additional Specific Colors as needed
Pilot-white, flesh, armband colors, black
Cockpit- Silver Highlights, Rust weathering (wash/pastels)
Engine Cans - Gold
Specific brands are mentioned as each brand varies somewhat with their version of a given color slightly, for example, Rustoleums Almond is a very different shade than Krylons. For best results, stick to these suggestions unless you would like to custom mix your own colors. For what it is worth, the above recommendations are not made lightly, many hours of research on both vintage photos and test shots were made to try and find the best possible color matches that are complementary with the original color scheme layout and each other."

Hope this lights a fire under some of you . . .

Wow, these are sweet. I wish I could have gotten in on this but I am out of money and space due to the MR SS Falcon. I may try to build a High Power flyable rocket version of this. There was an estes kit out many years ago begging to be upscaled. What are the dimensions on the engine tubes (diameter and length)?

Any news on the decal placement instructions?

I have figured out about 1/2 to 2/3 of the them, but I still need more info.

Which ones you need help with? This stalled out as we way undersold the number we thought, kind of became a moot point, and I needed to cut my time involved losses since we almost took a bath on this bad boy. I pretty much stopped with the paint guide where it stands, as only the very few who actually bought will need help . . . nowhere near the 30+ I had on the interest list . . . so if you need help, shout out here and I'll do what I can. Mines still not done, getting close, almost happy with primer coat and just about ready for base color . . . should go fast after that. When that happens, I'll be sure and take photos of where I put decals down for everyone, in the meantime, let me know which ones you need help with and I'll do my best to tell you where they go.

You do know that there is EXTRA spares of almost each decal right? Does that help?

Ryan

I've got a lot of the white decals figured out, but I havn't a clue as to the grey ones and the grey "letterd" ones.

I got two of the big red circles figured out, one of the red squares, and none of the red and white small circles.
