What you do is first make a sturdy pattern. map it out. put in the center a brass tube, then add another brass tube to telescope into the tube in the pattern to make a sweep. it takes a few coats of bondo to get it smooth.
OK. heres a trick to working with bondo. ive read alot of threads where every one says i hate bondo its so hard to work with. they all prefer Evercoat. well heres the trick to ever coat. all it is is Bondo with a lot of resin in it. you can make your own evercoat by adding Fiberglass resin to regular bondo to make it smooth. the more you add the smoother it gets.
I cant see spending that outrageous amount for such a small amount of Evercoat when i can make my own. There are a few products you can buy to smooth out bondo but its basically resin.
Heres the pattern with the sweep, i spread bondo over the whole thing and then put the sweep in and go around a few times until smooth. Carefully remove the sweep and let dry. if you do it right shouldnt take much sanding to get a nice smooth finish.
OK, finally got some Parts laid up in Epoxy. it was very cold but managed to get them made with only a few minor air bubbles. And started on the base for the cone. did a quick trim of the parts and a mock up.
Parts are made from white Gel coat and smooth on epoximite Medium set Epoxy. one recommendation i would make for any one doing gel coat work is to get a good Industrial gel coat. dont use a cheap boat gel coat it wont stick to the mold very well. Just my two cents.
I know where everything is going to be lit. plus all the parts will be cast hollow so it wont be a problem running lighting in this model. plus there will be access panel to get to the lights if need be.
Got a few things done today. mounted the Port side engine supports, trimmed some parts and the base for the cone is done, Minus a little putty on the center that doesnt really matter that will get trimmed away once its Vac formed. and added some panel lines to the main cargo box.
Started vac forming the part that goes behind the cone. got a few pulls to make the layers. and also mounted all four engine supports and boxed them in there final positions. Should be able to mold the main cargo box and the rear part of the main body this weekend.
