Spartan Shield (the Hoplon, or more correctly the Aspis)

theres a couple of things wrong with that but it will def help with the build process, so thanks for posting...

i like the sword blueprint
i wonder how hard it would be to replicate in
plasticard (styrene for the us guys) :)

You're welcome.

I'm almost done redrawing this in CAD but I am planning on using MDF for the sword. It's a little sturdier and could be scratch built with basic tools like a jig or scroll saw.

I read on wikipedia, (I know, not always accurate) that alot of the weapons/armor was reused from "Troy" and "Alexander"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/300_film

Maybe worth searching under those for more reference.

My wife is Greek and of Spartan descent. I'm seriously considering naming our first born son Leonidas. :)

"Molon labe" ("Come and get them" )

some of the spears and swords maybe, but stuff like the shields and helmets were custom for 300

That's what I figured. Thanks for the clarification.

the first site i posted has great measurements for all parts of the shield; its just the work involved is killer.

For the actors using this shield in the movie (most being 5' 10") I would think this sheild would be at least 3.5' in diameter.

Yeah, compared to the helmet......the shield could be killer. :p
Dont wanna start on attempting in making a shield mock-up......only to find out later that I got the wrong diameter :eek

How do you guys see Neca's 30" (....or was that 36"??) diameter shield? Close to accurate size perhaps?

any updates on this project from anyone....no one has shields out there

Gimme time... :cool

Do we KNOW beyond any doubt that the movie shields were only 31.75"? The Neca ads kept saying 36", and I just happen to have found a 36" dia. object with a rim also proportionately the right size. :D

I say 36" looks good to me

OK guys, just had a revelation caused by this instructable. A cardboard shield would be good and kinda lightweight. Make a fiberglass mold and work on it from there. Now the only problem is the site I ref'd in the first post is flat layers, so you would have to come up with some means of smoothing it out. A good paint job and no one would ever know.

Well, it only took me 2+ years. You would have thought I could have done a better job. :lol But hey, for two nights of work, eh...no complaints.

Cardboard and masking tape.
