This image still puzzles me. At first I noticed the distance from Joe to the end of the platform. The on the right is further back even though the support is still under him. But then there's the crazy space between the handguards. This is the same for both troopers. Then there is the black between them. It cuts across the platform and almost looks like a photo curling up toward the bottom. I'd say it's the same guy. I just don't understand why they would go through the trouble to doctor up a behind-the-scenes photo like that.

Yeah I cant understand that either.....but if you have a look at the making of star wars book they explain that MF/Tractor sequence a bit
They say it's made up of loads of layers
I think the B&W photo could just be a 'step' in the process of making that whole shot - superimposed in layers....?
If I had more time I'd start on a new spacepack but I'm happy with my 'effort' for now, lol

Thinking about this again.....I know Joe is supposed to be there twice but the backpacks are at different hegihts on each of the TKs?
One is low (left TK) one is higher (right TK)
Maybe it isn't Joe twice? I'll have to read that book again lol
Anyway, if it is him twice, 4 times or 9, it still doesn't help us work out what they used lol

Just noticed this prolific thread and thought I would throw in my two cents.
I highly doubt there was only one "actor" in the space suit. The idea was to have as few elements as possible to composite. And by having a single actor in there just makes the optical line-up that more cumbersome. I've seen some elements from that comp (inc. the photo above) and it looks to me like there are two different actors there. If they did double up a single guy, there would likely be some roto visible or one of them would be semi-transparent.

I was working on this back pack on and off over the past year, I found this thread a few months back and want to post but wasn't a member yet. I was going for the Marmit toy style back pak as i do believe it is somewhat accurate ( i could be wrong). I have a few forms for the 2 top cannisters and am still doing research on the bottom tank. I had a thought that the bottom tank may be some kind of vacuum cleaner, any thoughts?
Pack is looking great so far.
Don't forget- I discovered the top section, so I get a free pack right ?!

Update on this lads....
This is something that means quite a lot to me
Many hours of research, many emails back and forth to folks involved, many pigeon english emails with a Japanese sculptor, many incorrect purchases of what I believed the bottles to be and many cut fingers and splitners to make my prototype version, made just before CE, shown here:
With help from the sculptor and a lovely Japanese lady named Akiko who I used to work with I've managed to track down the exact thing used way back in 76 to recreate the bottles used on the Death Star surface and what a lot have believed for a long time were also then used on the back of the 2 TKs outside the Death Star as the Falcon gets sucked in
Here the guys are
Cleaned up in photoshop
This image shows the bottle tops are flat with some nipple on top
This toy made many moons ago shows what the maker thought the bottles should look like (this was based on what he was told BTW)
When most saw those bottles, it was dismissed as being inaccurate due to the hose and fastening to the chest.......
However a few years ago a chap on the RPF thought they might be bottles used on the Death Star surface. Then there was a SW exhibition in London. In there they had a few meters of the Death Star surface and these turret guns. I saw these bottles (before the link was made) and yes, they're about the correct size

I then went through everything to try and recreate the shapes seen. this is what I've come up with so far
With a clue from the scupltor I then managed to nail it down further with the help of this pattern here (thanks to Alex Howard for the reminder on this pattern)
I'm pretty happy with myself after some 5+ years of fiddling with this.
All I need to do now, is take my time, create the rest of the detail and vac form a new bottom
This is all I have on that so far. The sculptor was told those lower parts were just made up
However, I doubt that and they MUST have been used elsewhere in the film.
So can I ask if anyone wants to kindly sit down and watch ANH 100 times in slow mo to find the lower bit, feel free.
