Space Ghost - Updated Costume - WIP

I wanted to share my progress on making an updated Space Ghost costume. And maybe get some feedback. In trying to adapt any costume it's tricky because you have to stay recognizable or risk annoying and confusing people. (Nothing annoys people more than a Halloween costume they don't get.) So, here's my attempt to make S.G. a little less cartoony, while staying true to the source.

My costume is being made by CosplayHouse so I couldn't tweak that too much. And I'm scared since I have no idea what it will look like, when it will arrive, and if it'll fit. (I put my height in foot and inches instead of just inches. Hopefully they'll understand the diff. between ' and ".

Anyway, here is my Power Bands of foam, before sealing:

I wanted to incorporate elements from S.G. symbol, Phantom Cruiser, and the triangle chest emblem. I went too big on the buttons, I think, but hopefully the design will distract from the huge buttons.

For the belt, I'm straying away from his cummerbund look since it's kind of silly. And using a store bought tactical belt, making my own buckle. Here are my rough sketches:

I'm leaning toward the top middle one that is circled. Thoughts?

I'm about to do my sixth or seventh layer of glue on the Power Bands. I've never sealed foam with glue before, but I think I'm done when I no longer see the orange skin "pores". Comment if you know when to tell you're done sealing on glue. I'm also wondering once I paint it, I'm going to make it look used by using a black acrylic wash and silver paint dry brush scratch marks, but I don't know if I should do those two steps before or after I varnish it. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Foam sealed and painted.I'm nervous about the using the Liquitex Medium and Varnish because I have three dimensional surfaces that will collect the gloss at corners.

I like where you are going with this. I have always had a fondness for the Space Ghost character design, and like your idea of adding a bit of depth and detail to certain parts of the uniform. I look forward to seeing the final product.

I'd love to see what you come up with. Space Ghost was always a favorite of mine
