I saw an incredible Kestrel transporter over on the E.T.F. but I never saw a falcon....

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED NOV 3RD (PIC HEAVY!)

Those are interesting ideas, greylocke. Unfortunately, my workshop is dismantled at the moment, and many of my tools are not here. I was just lucky I had my big old heavy vice handy. Without even a work bench to mount it to, I had to set it on the floor to work. I'm just lucky my drill is variable speed! That, and some basic cutting tools I have enabled me (barely) to pull this off.
That said, I'm thinking about using a drill in the future to construct a custom mini-lathe to use for purposes just such as this. I'm not about to shell out for a new one for my modeling, since with my luck I'll never need one again, and this is working quite well even with my current limitations. A few refinements, a solid mount, a speed control such as you suggest, and I should be in business the next time I need to turn something!
I can't thank you enough for the idea. I really had no clue how I was going to do this. If I can be of any service in return, let me know!
I'm going to try to finish shaping these bells in the next couple of days.

I have an old drill that I might experiment with to turn it into a true mini lathe, the limitations of having your shop packed up can be a real bear of trying to work around. As for return services, I'll let you know when I start filming my "Masterpiece" :)

Hi here is my own large scale scratchbuilt eagle she is just over 50 inches long and has been bought by a collector here I am holding my baby before she left to fly in space.

regards Barrie please let me know what you think.

That is an AWESOME creation sir. And thank you for the extra pics. Lots of detail in there.

Wow! That's a lot of awesome Eagle you've got there! Of course there's a lot of that in this thread, great work all around gents :thumbsup

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED NOV 3RD (PIC HEAVY!)

That is a truly beautiful build, Barrie. Tell me please, how did you make your engine bells???

Hmm...sounds intriguing!:)

Barrie, those are great build-up pictures! I love the puzzle-piece type assembly of the command module, that's very cool to look at!

Didn't see the Falcon, no...

Thanks, Robn1: Eagles are all we do here! :cool

Atlanthia, did you ever receive my package?

Weekend time here, so update to soon follow!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED NOV 3RD (PIC HEAVY!)

well atlanthia, thats some first name by the way, the engine bells did give a few problems but in theend a simple soultion was found I went to a local supermarket sainsburys to be precise and purchased 4 plastic wine glasses which happened to be the aopprox dimensions and then just cut of the baes and there you have it 4 engine bells no vac forming no mess just a simple solution to a problem. regards Barrie

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED NOV 3RD (PIC HEAVY!)

Pretty much exactly what we're doing then! Great minds obviously think alike :)

Please feel free to post any more pics of your wonderful eagle as it inspires us greatly with our builds. I for one would love to see some more pics of the finished article. :)

BTW, the name is Darren :)

Hi Guys.

More Photos please Barrie! Fantastic work needs to be appreciated!!

I've been playing around with the main pod of the eagle in sketchup.

From the reference material I think there were some liberties taken, as with 'those issues', with the internal volume of the main pods. Probably not all of the pod interiors we saw but it's there I think.

So with my lateral thinking hat on I have taken the view that the main pods consisted of the main shell only. The Interior partitions, storage. furnishings etc are modular items fitted and or moved about to suit the long term needs or short term requirements as they came up.

For the most part the main pods probably changed little once fitted out but it made it easier for me to fit an interior with a view to being able to change the interior subject to 'defined' fitting points and ease of making it look like it had been done like this for real.

So heres a bundle of pics showing a familiar layout, hopefully and a quick alternate layout for moving a largish group of personnel and 'luggage'.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED NOV 3RD (PIC HEAVY!)

I'm not even going to ask why there is a Robby the Robot in the drawings I just accept it. :lol

You know I've been watching this thread for sometime and you guys are awesome. I just figured I'd pop in and say that. Keep up the outstanding work.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED NOV 3RD (PIC HEAVY!)

Wow..so much to respond to! :wacko All right...in order:

Atlanthia: I sure hope it does come sometime soon! I was hoping in time for your b-day...but there's always next year! :lol I'm beginning to think it was delivered via hot air balloon!

barrie: It's funny how we all turned to plastic glassware for our bells. One thing is certain, for the rest of my life I'll always see plastic glasses as potential Eagle bells! Great work, btw!

F3n: That's one of the beautiful things about the Eagles, there's so much room for extrapolation! Very thoughtful research on your part. Now, if you solve the mystery of the docking tube, rank yourself up there with Einstein and Hawking! :confused

Eyes Only: Thanks for popping in! Feel free to add any feedback you think of. Nothing here is set in stone, and input often seems to yield results!

Now, an update!

Between the hastily assembled "lathe" and barely adequate tools, it's amazing I was able to pull this off! I'm sparing you pictures of the process, it was pretty much like the last update or two! The final results pretty much speak for themselves. I tweaked the design a bit since the last update...

I'm about 80 percent happy with these. Maybe when they are finally painted silver and are attached to the rest of the engine assembly I'll be happier. It was pretty frustrating work...I'm just glad this ship doesn't have like 16 engines! :confused

One thing I did like was engraving that edge line on the inside of the bells. That little touch of detail seems to add a lot...
View attachment 127908
I spared you the dull lathing pictures, but here's the remnants of the bells which was carved away...

I realized that I needed more fishing floats. I can use them to form the ends of the "magnetic bottles" or whatever they call them behind the engines. These 1 3/4 inch size are perfectly sized for the job. They must think I'm really into fishing in the sporting goods department!

Weekend time here, so update to soon follow!

I've got 5 short stories I've written, I'm thinking of either trying to make a small film out of it with my kids as the actors, or if I can find a half decent comic artist who would be willing to go half and half I write they draw and make a web comic out of them.

And the Bells look good sir.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED NOV 3RD (PIC HEAVY!)

Well, the postman came this morning bearing gifts.......

Enough styrene sheets and assorted strips to build a 1:1 scale model of the Eiffel Tower, all wrapped up in some very tempting retail offers and red ribbon. :love

My heartfelt thanks to you, Bob. You went way above and beyond....Now I just have to find a model worthy of this precious bounty....

I may look at rebuilding my cockpit with some of this .020 sheet. Do you think it will be strong enough for that?

The engine bells look awesome Mate! I so wish I was the other side of starting mine. I have no vice so I am looking at other ways to support the drill upside down. Maybe a base and two uprights, with holes cut to slide the drill into.

Thanks again, Mate and your gift is very near to completion now. Do you want me to make flat stands for them or are you going to glue them into position?

Yeah, the tempting retail offers were the result of having no wrapping paper handy. Still, a colorful and cheap alternative! :)

You, of all people, will have no trouble with this!

i think I used .020 on mine, and I'm sure it will be strong enough

Having a vice was good, but I still had the problem of having no table to mount it to, hence it slid around a bit in spite of its weight. That was part of my frustration!

Thanks again, Mate and your gift is very near to completion now. Do you want me to make flat stands for them or are you going to glue them into position?o

I'll find a way to mount them into position as is. I can't wait to see them! :)

Glad that hot-air balloon set down, Wizard of Oz-like, into the U.K. finally! :thumbsup

Do you have a 1X2 and a c-clamp? Those plus large hose clamps can be used to secure the drill. hose clamps around drill and wood, clamp wood to table or bench.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED NOV 3RD (PIC HEAVY!)

Update:

I had a little extra time over the Thanksgiving holiday, so I was able to make some progress on the Eagle engine parts. The following series of pictures shows the steps to turning fishing floats into "magnetic bottles", but basically it's cutting, breaking, sanding and gluing...
View attachment 129381View attachment 129382View attachment 129383View attachment 129384View attachment 129385View attachment 129386View attachment 129387View attachment 129388
I added straight styrene rods to the outer edge where plastic will be wrapped around it and glued into place. That wasn't too bad, one piece at a time...
View attachment 129389View attachment 129390View attachment 129391View attachment 129392View attachment 129393
I primered one end and got out the sandpaper and red putty for some "smoothing out" of the surface, and to fill the round seam where the outer plastic and the fishing float joins. Also, I have to sand off the 'made in China' stamp on the ends!
View attachment 129394View attachment 129395View attachment 129396View attachment 129397
After sanding I applied more primer and examined where I'll need to do some final sanding touch-ups. After one more coat of primer, I proceeded to finish the other three...

All of these balls and tubing in the back of this ship are going to require (at least for me) that I use a different approach to help me visualize this, I'm setting up the parts of the ship at their relative heights, resting on stacks of cd's (those are very handy for this)...
View attachment 129405View attachment 129406
I made a couple of crazy contraptions out of cardboard which will help me visualize the spaces between the engines. I even got to use a couple of the discarded plastic glasses for bell holders!
View attachment 129407View attachment 129408View attachment 129409View attachment 129410View attachment 129411
Other than holding the four engine 'stacks' together with 4 inch aluminum machine screws, there's not much that I know yet.
View attachment 129412View attachment 129413View attachment 129414View attachment 129414View attachment 129415View attachment 129416View attachment 129417
These are without a doubt the weirdest-looking things I've ever made, but in the context of their purpose they make total sense! I added two more holders for the small fishing floats. This holder won't accommodate the lower two, but that's okay. Now I can figure out how to build all of this by having a handy "3D" layout to study!
View attachment 129418View attachment 129419View attachment 129420View attachment 129421View attachment 129422View attachment 129423
It's also giving me a first-time realization of the length-width-height of this model. It may be the smallest one on this thread, but it's still pretty impressive!

Wish me luck while I cross my fingers: this is going to get interesting!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED NOV 3RD (PIC HEAVY!)

Looking good so far and I never would have though of using fishing bobbers for anything.
