I have an old drill that I might experiment with to turn it into a true mini lathe, the limitations of having your shop packed up can be a real bear of trying to work around. As for return services, I'll let you know when I start filming my "Masterpiece"

well atlanthia, thats some first name by the way, the engine bells did give a few problems but in theend a simple soultion was found I went to a local supermarket sainsburys to be precise and purchased 4 plastic wine glasses which happened to be the aopprox dimensions and then just cut of the baes and there you have it 4 engine bells no vac forming no mess just a simple solution to a problem. regards Barrie

I've been playing around with the main pod of the eagle in sketchup.
From the reference material I think there were some liberties taken, as with 'those issues', with the internal volume of the main pods. Probably not all of the pod interiors we saw but it's there I think.
So with my lateral thinking hat on I have taken the view that the main pods consisted of the main shell only. The Interior partitions, storage. furnishings etc are modular items fitted and or moved about to suit the long term needs or short term requirements as they came up.
For the most part the main pods probably changed little once fitted out but it made it easier for me to fit an interior with a view to being able to change the interior subject to 'defined' fitting points and ease of making it look like it had been done like this for real.
So heres a bundle of pics showing a familiar layout, hopefully and a quick alternate layout for moving a largish group of personnel and 'luggage'.

barrie: It's funny how we all turned to plastic glassware for our bells. One thing is certain, for the rest of my life I'll always see plastic glasses as potential Eagle bells! Great work, btw!

Now, an update!
Between the hastily assembled "lathe" and barely adequate tools, it's amazing I was able to pull this off! I'm sparing you pictures of the process, it was pretty much like the last update or two! The final results pretty much speak for themselves. I tweaked the design a bit since the last update...

I'm about 80 percent happy with these. Maybe when they are finally painted silver and are attached to the rest of the engine assembly I'll be happier. It was pretty frustrating work...I'm just glad this ship doesn't have like 16 engines! :confused
One thing I did like was engraving that edge line on the inside of the bells. That little touch of detail seems to add a lot...

I realized that I needed more fishing floats. I can use them to form the ends of the "magnetic bottles" or whatever they call them behind the engines. These 1 3/4 inch size are perfectly sized for the job. They must think I'm really into fishing in the sporting goods department!

Enough styrene sheets and assorted strips to build a 1:1 scale model of the Eiffel Tower, all wrapped up in some very tempting retail offers and red ribbon. :love
My heartfelt thanks to you, Bob. You went way above and beyond....Now I just have to find a model worthy of this precious bounty....
I may look at rebuilding my cockpit with some of this .020 sheet. Do you think it will be strong enough for that?
The engine bells look awesome Mate! I so wish I was the other side of starting mine. I have no vice so I am looking at other ways to support the drill upside down. Maybe a base and two uprights, with holes cut to slide the drill into.

Yeah, the tempting retail offers were the result of having no wrapping paper handy. Still, a colorful and cheap alternative!

Do you have a 1X2 and a c-clamp? Those plus large hose clamps can be used to secure the drill. hose clamps around drill and wood, clamp wood to table or bench.

I had a little extra time over the Thanksgiving holiday, so I was able to make some progress on the Eagle engine parts. The following series of pictures shows the steps to turning fishing floats into "magnetic bottles", but basically it's cutting, breaking, sanding and gluing...

I primered one end and got out the sandpaper and red putty for some "smoothing out" of the surface, and to fill the round seam where the outer plastic and the fishing float joins. Also, I have to sand off the 'made in China' stamp on the ends!

After sanding I applied more primer and examined where I'll need to do some final sanding touch-ups. After one more coat of primer, I proceeded to finish the other three...

All of these balls and tubing in the back of this ship are going to require (at least for me) that I use a different approach to help me visualize this, I'm setting up the parts of the ship at their relative heights, resting on stacks of cd's (those are very handy for this)...
