Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club (PIC HEAVY!)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club 2 UPDATES 03/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Ummm. Did I mention that you two rock?:behave

Thanks Bud! Still plenty of time to join us in this build. You could do a 12" version or a 23" version....Any size you want!
Yeah...but Atlanthia rocks more: my Eagle is going to look like a refrigerator magnet next to his behemoth!!

Ahhhh, but the detail in yours is astounding!!! It's all the more incredible when people realise that your scale is soooo much smaller than mine as well!

Well, stay tuned: the screw-ups may well be equally astounding!:unsure

No doubt you've substituted by buying a larger dowel and fashioning a replica...:cool

Yup! And I cut and stuck my own fingernail on it, too!

Well, I *DID* check eBay for kits- they do have some, but they cost more than I make in a week, so.....:cry

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club 2 UPDATES 03/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

I know of TWO 1/72nd scale kits on EBAY right now for about $50 each, but I can't post it here. If you are genuinely interested, P.M. me and I will give you the details if I can find them.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club 2 UPDATES 03/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

I glued the new printout of the control panels onto thin white cardboard and trimmed them into separate pieces. Painstakingly gluing them into place wasn't too bad, except for making sure no excess glue leaked out the sides, but that's old news to all model builders! The real achievement here (for me, at least!) is that I managed to glue the parts on without accidentally putting any on upside-down! After finishing this, I realized I probably would've been fine using my originals from my last update, but since they're now done I'll think no more about them!

I won't be adding anything else to the side walls until I've established the exact dimensions and placement of the front control panel and the trapezoidal boxes behind the pilots. Those, in fact, are the next step!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club 2 UPDATES 03/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

That looks incredible! Unbelieveable to think you made that in your livingroom. It looks laser cut!!!!
I am definitely redoing my side panels like that. It just looks sooo much cleaner than my attempt.

Really really nice job

Just one question, if you are going to be raising the seating area on either side of the 'ramp' ........I guess you will just lose the bottom row. Not really an issue in the grand scheme of things.

I am DEFFO redoing my side walls like this.

What?! You mean you don't have lasers in your living room? I thought everyone did! Great fun, playing 'chase the beam' with ones' cat!:lol

Glad you liked my approach. For some reason, I kept dropping the pieces as I worked, then had to keep stopping and checking their orientation (so getting none of the pieces upside down had more to do with clumsiness than care!).

As far as the ramps go, I've decided not to elevate them as originally planned. The spatial discrepancies in that darned cabin cannot be corrected, so one floor level it is for me. Getting the door, seats and windows to jibe would be like trying to explain the Enterprise bridge hypothetically occupying the entire saucer section!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club 2 UPDATES 03/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Hey Guys! Just a small interim update... It seems right now that every time I do even the slightest part of a build on any aspect of this Eagle, it's like a revelation with regards to to overall size of this thing. So....I I have started to construct the Passenger Pod and this thing is bloody HUGE! :lol
I think you are going to hear that phrase a lot from me in the near future....
The pod measures: 19 1/4" (over 3 feet) Long x 10 1/8" (nearly 1 foot) Wide or 49cm (1/2 metre) Long x 25.75cm (1/4 metre) Wide!!!

The reason for these pictures today is twofold: Firstly, this is the first time I can actually lay things out and show the actual size of his Eagle. Secondly, I want you all to look VERY closely at the expression on my lovely wife's face...I asked her specifically to remain in shot (ref ManfromNaboo) to help clarify the scale....should I be concerned at that easy smile, or have I just got the most understanding woman on the planet?

Anyway, here are the pics of the build so far. When the pices for the pod are all cut, I will assemble it and strengthen it with wood and some fibreglass where required. I look forward to your comments / observations at this point especially, as I feel I am at the point of no return - last chance to turn back, so to speak...Let me know what you all think and I would be very grateful :)

Nuff said! Here are the pics!

I hear what you are saying but, as the seating level "rises" (hypothetically) the floor space would increase, as the cockpit gets wider up to the point of the tiling on each side. I am only mentioning this because of the possible difficulties you might face fitting the pilot seats in when you reduce the floor space to fit it in to the outer shell....raising the floor, even just a little on each side, might just alleviate that potential issue..:)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club 2 UPDATES 04/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Wow, it really is coming into focus now!! That promises to be one impressive beast! And I envy you for bouncing around to different parts of the ship. Meanwhile, I continue to noodle away at the command module... :confused

Yes, you do have the most tolerant wife around! Most guys I know have to beg on their knees to go see a basketball game, so yes you are very lucky!
Having said that, I'd still like to see her face when you ask her about building that rising launch ramp in the floor!:lol

Valid points about the floor level, Darren. But alas, I've already taken that into account! As you say, if the floor level lowers, the room for seats diminishes. The doorway must stay as is, in order to allow for connection to the floor level in the front connector to the passenger pod. Raising the pilots' seats to window level would've, I decided, added ramps whose height would approach that of a fashion runway. That's when I opted for a floor-level design all around. Granted I could still have sunk the level of the pilots, but that would have involved either adding an extra row of control panels on the sides, or extending the heights of those already there, which would have been quite a distortion of what was seen on screen. Not to mention the aforementioned floor space would've narrowed considerably!

Since I'm here, see the next step I'm working on. I printed out and pasted on cardboard a mock front control panel. I'm fine-tuning the side angles, so when put in place the angle will match the side walls appropriately. Hopefully!
