That's really the problem. They fixed the most visible problem, but the whole trailer is garbage. There is nothing worthwhile there at all. On Earth? No. Jim Carey? No. There is nothing here that any Sonic fan ever asked for. Honestly, this looks like a modern version of Super Mario Bros. I don't care if you actually make it look like Sonic, the movie itself still looks like crap.

What do you expect, it's a video game movie, when has there ever been a decent movie based on a game with little to no plot? The only half way decent no plot video game movie was Rampage and that was in large part due to it starring the Rock and having only a little to do with the original game. I wonder what made the producers and the studio to go through with this given that Sonic hasn't really been truly popular in decades and movies based on games like it (like Mario Bros) have bombed in the past. I know that studios like playing it safe these days, and I'm fine with it and understand why they are, but this hardly seems like a safe project to me, it sounds like it was a bit of a gamble to me. Safer than a completely new idea but still riskier than the usual remake/reboot/sequel/prequel that Hollywood turns to when they want to try to play it safe.

I don't give a pass to any movie, just because most of them suck. All movies have to be good. If they're not, they deserve to be criticized and fail miserably. I don't know that the studios care if it fails, it's just a write-off that way, but I'm not going to give them credit that they haven't earned. This movie is going to suck, redesign or no.

For projects like this, they really should get some input from the fans before even writing a script to see what might work best.

Decided to go watch this last night. So while it strays very far from the games, as I expected, it does have a charm to it. Don't expect a big master piece of any kind. There was some actual pretty funny parts, cheesy of course.
I was going to see a 7:30 showing last night with 2 other friends, and the theater was full 30 mins before, so we has to get tickets for 9:15, which also ended up being full.
Since this is a post release thread, I'll day that while throughout the film got just the topical laughter, it was during a post credits scene, in which Tails appears saying he's looking for Sonic and has finally tracked Jim to earth....that got the biggest cheering all night.
My biggest complaint would be, that while there were a few references towards the games/comics, I was hoping for a bunch more.
But overall, a fun silly movie with some pretty fast paced action. They made Sonic maybe too fast in how quickly he can go somewhere and back instantly.

It was fun. I wasn’t expecting too much out of it, so it exceeded my expectations. There were some cringey parts, but to me, what I considered cringe were the weak movie stereotypes, not cringey references or anything, like, “How about we start the movie part of the way through and then catch up?” I feel like a lot of animated movies start this way (Megamind, Ratatouille, etc.) and as soon as I saw it starting that way, I just kind of went, “Oh, it’s that kind of movie.” Ben Schwartz and James Marsden actually seemed to have pretty good chemistry, which is really surprising considering how Sonic was CG. Jim Carrey hams it up and chews the scenery, but overall he’s not too bad either. Visually speaking, not as good as, say, Detective Pikachu, but I liked it better. Definitely a “turn your brain off” kind of kids’ movie, but totally inoffensive for a kids’ movie, considering how dumb some kids’ movies have been in the past. (Minions, Secret life of Pets, that Trolls movie, blech.) There was also an awesome “Sanic” terrible drawing reference, like these memes from a few years ago, it pretty much looked identical to this

As for the post credit scene,
I actually thought that showing Tails was the worst part of the movie. Tails is pretty dumb, and hearing the cringeworthy original voice actor made it a lot worse. I actually shouted when he appeared, but it didn’t matter, because everyone else in the theater started screaming because they loved it.

Well, I guess it IS in improvement over what they had....yet, while it looks more like Sonic, it sure doesn't act anything like him from the games. Have any of those guys even played a Sonic game before???
But one thing they still got wrong on the design, one the even all the fan edits got wrong. Sonic's arms are skin colored, nor blue, and mainly, the skin colored fur was never suppose to be fur, it was skin. But whatever......and couldn't they at the very least gotten Jim Carrey a fat suit or something.

They changed this a long time ago. His arms are blue now.

They have been since Sonic Boom in 2014.
Sonic Boom, which didn't even look very good, was made by another company and only released by Sega. Every single other game, including Sonic forces, he has skin colored arms like he is suppose to.
