dumb question,
for example
vaders helmet-prop or costume...or both?
lukes (or any jedis saber) prop or costume accessory?
Cant the argument be made that they cant exist without the other?

Is hans gunbelt a prop or is it considered a costume?
Is there any guideline?
Can a jedi costume (really) exist without a saber?

IMO, in the simplest terms, if it's worn it's a costume (or part of a costume), if it's handled it's a prop.

Of course, certain items could potentially fall into both categories. The Comm Badges used on Star Trek: The Next Generation for example, which are both worn and handled (though I consider them to be a prop).

Vader's helmet--costume. Vader's lightsaber--prop.
Luke's utility belt--costume. Luke's lightsaber--prop.
Han's gunbelt--costume. Han's blaster--prop.

If it's worn it's a costume.
If it's handled by an actor it's a prop.
If it's not one of the above but is visible on screen it's a set or set dressing.

some items are a sort of grey area. Ive seen wardrobe supply police belts and ive seen wardrobe argue that they dont need to supply police belts as its a prop dept thing.

SurferGeek got it head on (apply directly to forehead) as thats how its "supposed" to be.

Vader's helmet would be a costume, but the helmet that Luke opens up in ROTJ would be a prop.

I think helmets should only be considered a costume if you actually wear it. If it just sits on a stand or mannequin it's more like a prop than a costume.

What about R2-D2?

Prop or Costume?

Okay, discuss...

Don,

I asked my wife this... she said until I can crawl inside my R2, it's a prop. (And as she pointed out - a big prop that doesn't belong in our living room.)

She has to cope with so much... :)

IIRC, we had this discussion here years ago and people were so divided on what is a prop and what isnt that it lead to the creation of a new board!:lol
