So finally watched the first two Daniel Craig "Bond" movies... WTH MAN?!?!

I’m also not sure why so many people feel the need to start threads to rant about films/shows that have:
A. Been out forever.
B. Certainly have threads that already exist discussing them.

So, as I stated. Awesome, a rant thread. How original.

But, to entertain this discussion, I’d venture a guess that “whoever owns the rights” allowed these to continue past two films because:
A. They made a combined $1.2b in box office sales against like $300m budgets.
B. The first was both critically acclaimed AND well received by audiences.

The third made $1.2 billion on its own against a $200 million budget, and again was critically acclaimed and well received by audiences.

So it would seem your complaints place you in the minority, which means they continue making them because MOST people enjoy them, and they don’t care about the “This isn’t my Bond” fits that get thrown by a minority of viewers.

Again this is the "Entertainment and Movie Talk" forum, so I don't know why you are continually baffled that we are talking about movies whether they are old or new. People keep making the mistake of equating earnings with quality. The Star Wars sequels have shown that making a lot of money doesn't equal a great product. Like Star Wars, people will go see a movie that has "James Bond" in the title. Critics also don't mean squat. There are really great movies that the critics hate and the audiences love.

Weird that you’d bring Star Wars up in a thread about James Bond.

You asked why whoever owns the rights to these continues making them. I answered your question in easy to follow steps.

1. They make money
2. They are critically acclaimed
3. Most viewers report enjoying them

Again, you are in the minority according to every metric that matters, so they don’t care if you’re going to come on the internet and post about it.

I’m not at all baffled by anyone talking about movies, old or new...but I’m incredibly tired of coming to this site and seeing just a whiny, hate mongering, “If I don’t like it nobody can” bunch of trash posts, so I’m discussing that aspect of “Entertainment and Movie Talk.”

I'm not crazy about the new Bond as it's just been following trends of other films---to its detriment---when it should be the other way round: Bond sets the trend for action/adventure films. It should be the stand out. Even with the lamer Moore films, they were unlike anything else that came out at the time.

Having said that, Casino Royale is the best of the batch only because it's the best offering from Bond since GoldenEye (directed by the same guy, no less!) but as a film, it's a bit tepid. At that point, the Bourne and M:I films had been out and, of course, they were to fill the void the Bond films left but they also set the weight for what Bond now needed to punch at.

Quantum of Solace stinks. A writer's strike didn't help but it was surely a lukewarm remake of Goldfinger from the start.

Skyfall gave me hope when it started injecting more of that wild humor (that I personally love about Bond) back into it. Him jumping off the head of Comodo dragon made me so happy---I can't begin to express it in words. The problem with Skyfall was The Dark Knight. Everyone wanted a piece of that film's success. Tone and story beats are lifted straight from Dark Knight and injected straight into the film, and it's just a bit unimaginative because of it. The last act at Wayne Bond Manor and him having his own Alfred had me groaning all the way through.

Spectre is just tired. Everyone is so tired and uninterested in the film. Everyone. I honestly can't remember the story of the film let alone the set-pieces, and I don't think any one of the cast could tell it you: it's so forgetful. Modern Bond continues the recent trend of flaccid retro-active continuity---where everyone is related---in one of the most contrived plot reveals yet: Blofeld is the older step-brother of James Bond. Great. How did that make anyone feel?

...Exactly. It didn't. Pointless.

I don't know if the new one is held off from release indefinitely but I am always eager to see another Bond film, even when I don't always agree with what it's doing; Bond is now ritual watching for me and, I'm sure, many others. Carey Fukanaga is one of the best working today and I'm interested in seeing what he brings to No Time to Die. I'll save my snide remarks after I've seen it.

See...THIS is a valid criticism with well thought out points.

It’s not just “THIS ISN’T MY BOND, CALL ME A WAHMBULANCE WHY DO THEY KEEP MAKING THESE” drivel.

We need more of this.

As a side note, that’s about the best description I’ve seen if Spectre. I wanted to like it, but everyone seems like they were just showing up, and nothing more.

Weird that you’d bring Star Wars up in a thread about James Bond.

I wonder if it’s a coincidence that I see you whine about Star Wars a lot, too?

You asked why whoever owns the rights to these continues making them. I answered your question in easy to follow steps.

Again, you are in the minority according to every metric that matters, so they don’t care if you’re going to come on the internet and cry about it.

As a matter of fact, if YOU hate everything that YOU watch...maybe it’s not the movies that are the problem, but in fact you are the problem.

I’m not at all baffled by anyone talking about movies, old or new...but I’m incredibly tired of coming to this site and seeing just a whiny, hate mongering, “If I don’t like it nobody can” bunch of trash posts. And you’re one of the names that sticks out in that group, so I’m discussing that aspect of “Entertainment and Movie Talk.”

Then don't read the post and move on to something that agrees with you... very simple.

I’ll read what I please, thank you.

Besides, this “suggestion” implies that these individuals won’t turn ANY thread into some kind of crying fest...which is clearly not the case.

That also isn’t the case in reverse...when I ask why people are in a thread complaining about a show/movie that they...
A. Have never watched
B. Don’t like so they stopped watching
...I get told that they are free to share their opinion regardless. So, that works both ways. When I see a sobfest about how “This isn’t my [insert whatever thing from some poor guy’s youth that isn’t exactly what they want anymore]” then I am also free to engage in that thread.

Funny how that works, huh?

You made a few good points...especially the similarity between Skyfall and the Dark Knight. I didn't make that connection when I saw it, makes me look at it a bit differently. Bond should indeed set trends not follow them. Following trends will make movies that will sell well in the short term but often won't stand the test of time.

I said in another thread that I like the Craig films, but as was said here...

The Bond movies should be SETTING the standard. Not becoming another Bourne or MI movie that just so happens to have the Bond name attached.

Very well said, & I really wish that was still true.

Folks who don't like the shows/movies aim their complaints at the shows/movies and the people who make them. You and a few others complain about other forum members over their opinions.

Funny how you can't see the difference, huh?

Interesting that another person that largely has nothing positive to say about anything would pop in here to chime in.

There is a distinct difference between posting opinions, and just whining incessantly about EVERYTHING, which I’m sure you won’t understand, seeing as...well...you’re one of the individuals that does exactly this.

Are you guys in some kind of club or something? If not, you should really think about making one!

If there’s one thing the last year has taught me, as relates to this forum, it’s that there are many better things I can be doing than arguing about something so trivial and subjective as “I like this!/I DON’T!” on the internet.

I’ve probably been guilty of taking things too personally when someone says they don’t like something that I liked, but the back and forth never seems to persuade either side, nor does the discussion ever really evolve.

There’s no one singular truth to what is “good” and what is not. Show me a movie that is “universally loved” or a “classic” or “the best of all time,” and I’ll find someone who hates it, for the reasons that others think it’s great. “Good” is not absolute.

I’ve liked all of the Craig Bond movies a lot, and I’d say he’s my favorite in the role, but I know that’s largely influenced by the fact that the more over-the-top stuff has always been my least favorite part of the franchise. Where for many people, Bond begins and ends with Connery, and everything else is second, to me, there’s no pedestal his portrayals are elevated to. Maybe that has to do with seeing those early films years after watching the ones that were released as I was growing up (Brosnan’s).

Is it really necessary to "attack" each other over this?

No, it’s not...and I shouldn’t be worked up about it, but I’m just growing increasingly tired of seeing nothing but negativity in this sub-forum in particular.

There are a group of several individuals who seem as if they like NOTHING, and they feel a need to share that dislike in a fair majority of their posts. It’s even little things like “I have hopes for this because ‘X director’ isn’t involved.” That’s just a thinly veiled complaint about something else that’s disguised as a positive post. Even in this thread, about Daniel Craig’s Bond Films, the topic of Star Wars being bad is thrown in...and for what reason? No reason, other than to just complain about something else.

It has gotten to the point where I often don’t even post opinions about older films I’ve just watched because I’ll search the old thread up, see all the vitriol, and just be like “Nah, no reason to share that I enjoyed it just to see a bunch of responses about how much the film sucked.”

My question to those people is this...if EVERYTHING Hollywood does is terrible, then WHY ARE YOU IN A SUB-FORUM ABOUT THINGS HOLLYWOOD DOES?

The only answer I can see is “So I can spew my discontent.”

I’ve never once sought out a forum dedicated to something I don’t enjoy. Let alone sought out a forum about something I don’t enjoy, then ACTIVELY shared how much I don’t enjoy said topic. That’s just...weird.

Maybe it’s because the pandemic really slowed the release of things, but to be honest, I’m tired of it. We get it, you hate Hollywood. You hate Star Wars. You hate Disney. You hate Star Trek. You hate women as heroes. You hate that your childhood has been ruined by new versions of things that are different than when you were young. We get it. We’ve all seen your posts about it...incessantly...in threads that have nothing to do with any of those topics...and then you want to get offended when you get called out about it, and rant about how you can have your opinion.
(I do not mean you, BTTUK )

So yeah, attacks aren’t necessary, and for that I apologize...but the negativity in this sub-forum is off the charts, and I just don’t understand the concept of even coming here to post if every post you’re going to make is to complain about SOMETHING.

Then stop perusing it. You're the one who dropped the negative grenade in here.

“I have hopes for this because ‘X director’ isn’t involved.” That’s just a thinly veiled complaint about something else that’s disguised as a positive post.
So what you’re saying is, you can just magically decide that someone else’s comment is negative because you perceive it to be, even if it’s actually the opposite.

You’re right. Why should we critique or demand anything of quality? If that’s the case, might I direct you to my eBay page where I’m selling “screen-accurate” film costumes that I got at Party City? We should just accept everything, because we want to be positive while rich executives make money off of chumps like us for just accepting everything at face value. I mean, c’mon. If you disagree with a sentiment posted here, try to understand it from their perspective, offer up a conversation about why it’s not working for them. I like the Craig Bond films. But I’m not in here shouting at everyone because they aren’t enjoying them the same way as me. Are there trolls around that you just shouldn’t engage with? Sure. But you’re painting everyone here that has even briefly mentioned in passing not being totally satisfied with something as being a negative whiner.

On a different note, what are some of everyone’s favorite Bond films here? Specifically out of the Connery films, which ones are “must-watch”? I’ve been kind of going through a “classic film education” on my own time the past year and want to know what classic Bond fans consider to be the most representative of the franchise.

This is not an accurate representation of my point.

At no point in time have I said that EVERY negative opinion or post is inherently wrong. In fact, in this very thread, I posted a response to a well thought out and articulated negative comment regarding these films. The difference between that post (and hundreds of others that are also stating “I didn’t like this) and the posts I’m referring to are the incessant, unnecessary, negativity JUST to be negative.

Trust me, I have tried to “understand it from their perspective,” but I’ve got nothing. I can’t come up with a SINGLE reason why the individuals I’m specifically referring to continue to post in this sub-forum, other than they like to listen to each other whine.

Make no mistake, it is NOT a majority of members...or even a large amount of them. But the few that do fit into this category are so “beat you over the head” with it that it’s impossible to ignore.

I apologize if I’ve been painting this with a broad enough stroke so as to make it seem like it’s some huge amount of members, as that is not the case. I also apologize if I have come across that ALL negative opinions are invalid, as that is also not the case. My complaint is with the over the top relentlessness of negativity that a few members display in virtually EVERY post in this specific sub-forum. Like I said, we get it, you (not you particularly, I’m paraphrasing if that’s the right word) hate and don’t even watch [insert your show/movie]...so why, exactly, are you even IN the [insert your show/movie] thread? Does this sentiment of mine make sense?

This thread was a good conversation of how people feel about the Bond films, good bad or indifferent, until you showed up flinging poo at everybody over their opinions. Your lack of self awareness is astounding.
