Posting this because I could find nothing previous and I just can't fathom I am the only one who feels this way.

I vividly remember the Mrs and me going to the theater in 2006 to watch Casino Royale. I also remember us walking out in disgust at the end, saying over and over again that that was not a James Bond movie.

I haven't watched a JB movie since, but got me Quantum of Solace & Skyfall on DVD last week, basically just to say that my JB DVD's are up to date.

We watched Quantum last night and, once again, it was a horrible Bond movie. I am sincerely dreading to watch Skyfall.

Now don't get me wrong, the movies are great as movies, but IMO, they are NOT James Bond.

I vividly remember seeing The Spy who loved me at the cinema, and taking a week to pick my jaw off the ground thereafter. I was hooked on Bond for life, and all the other movies did not disappoint (except for Dalton :lol)

That's 30 years of Bond I'm talking about personally.

And in one fell swoop, somebody somewhere in 2006, decided to kill James Bond.

Bond has a character and a set number of variables have to happen for it to be Bond.

He has to be witty & charming. The villain has to be excessively evil with terrible, surreal, gadgets at his disposal to destroy the world :lol. Q has to give Bond gadgets to counter those :lol. Humour and quippy remarks are a must. And so on and so forth.

You know what I mean : ENTERTAINMENT, James Bond style.

You are supposed to sit back, have the story spoon-fed to you, oooh and aaah at the gadgets, gasp at the stunts (sometimes laugh at them because it's "as iiiiiiif !" - but still, VERY entertaining, albeit a tad corny at times.

Now, I had to struggle to understand the plot of Quantum. I didn't quite get who was who or what the heck was going on with the BASIC plot till 45 minutes into the film. The filming was confusing, too fast, and in general, dark. There was no Q. Not a single frakking sausage of a gadget - zero. Bond was acting like a paranoid terrorist rather than Bond. And I could go on and on and on.

In short, not far off from what I remember from Casino Royale.

Again, I am not saying anything about the movie. As an action film, it is fantastic - But it it NOT Bond.

What, the 'new' James Bond 'look & feel' ? Well, sorry mate, you can't re-invent Bond like that. It's like wanting to re-invent the wheel. Bond is Bond, is Bond. He was written that way. Period. Modernising ? Nope, the Bond movies with Brosnan did that VERY well. So its not that either I'm afraid.

Imagine Darth Vader portrayed as taking a kid to Disneyland and enjoying it.

That's the level of change I feel they did to Bond.

RIP Bond, I'll miss you :cry

/ end rant :lol

Oh I dunno, I thought Brosnan did a phenomenal Bond. But agreeing on who the best Bond was is like a discussion about religion or politics.

Celebrate diversity I say :lol

But yeah, meh, who cares, Bond is dead to me anyway :lol

At least I have 20ish odd movies to treasure forever :D

Times change, Bond died back in the 80's for me.

This was covered before here and some very interesting comments were made.

The Franchise sure had legs though, it had a very long and profitable run

Who was the best Bond is indeed a topic all unto itself. In all the films prior to Casino Royale, at least the basic Bond elements were always there.

What I am saying here is that someone killed Bond in general and turned the films into normal action movies with 'some guy' :lol

Don't worry, QoS is fairly universally considered a weak Bond movie, so you're not alone there. Skyfall is a much more traditional Bond movie, and without spoiling anything, it brings the series much more in line with classic Bond. It has a fair share of silliness, but it's much more a Bond movie.
That said, I'm still not a big fan of Daniel Craig's portrayal of James Bond either. There are some good one liners in Skyfall, but they just fall flat for me. Pierce Brosnan had much better delivery imo, and would have eaten those lines right up.

Thanks for that. Tonight I'll watch Skyfall then, but not hoping for any kind of return to the 'classic' Bond :(

Will report back tomorrow :lol

I guess each generation gets its Bond. I grew up in the 60s, so 2+2=4 and Connery is Bond, it's that simple. Always thought Moore was a pale successor (acting-wise the guy is a flat tire) although some of the films are still fun. Brosnin had the personality and charm for the character but the films were plain bad, just catalogs of gadgets. Craig is a solid actor, but I don't like his Bond, too cold. He's little more than a hit man with no personality.

Connery will always be my Bond because that is what I grew up on but what is interesting is that Craig plays Bond a lot like he was written in the books. Bond had charm in the books but he could be very cold and really was just a glorified hit man doing what his country told him to do.

Yes, but while book Bond is a hardened killer, he also has charm. He gets people to trust him who shouldn't. Craig's interpretation of Bond completely lacks that. He's just a tough guy.

Dude...

Read the books. Moore is NOT Bond, he's a comedian with a gun and not a very good one at that. The recent films, all three of them, are better than any of the Moore films in my opinion. I think you don't like it because you're a fan of "Bond light" and not the roots of where the character came from. Bond is ruthless, abusive, cunning, manipulative, and takes a damn beating. He rarely makes quips, he gets the job done.

Craig is an excellent Bond and Casino Royale & Skyfall are excellent Bond films.

There are two types of Bond, the Connery "line" and the Moore "line". The first is truer to the original character and generally more serious. The second is more of a comedic parody of that character. If you prefer the Moore line (Moore & Brosnan) then I'm afraid we'll never see eye to eye. :lol

And for the record, my order of Bonds is:

Connery
Connery
Connery
Craig
Dalton
Lazenby
Brosnan

Moore

:lol

Indeed not :lol

Bah, potayto potahto :lol

But in my book, Bond is currently dead and buried.

I grew up with Moore as Bond so he is my 'go-to' Bond. Connery was always showing on the Sunday Night Movie so he is my No. 2 Bond. But even to me Moore's last good Bond movie was For Your Eyes Only. It really got campy after that.

I've read a few of the original books--thought they were crap, so I don't really care if movie Bond is like book Bond.

I like Bond but am not a HUGE fan. I currently only have Live and Let Die, Man With the Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, and For Your Eyes Only in my collection.

There are so many Bond films that don't fit that. From Russia with Love is generally considered by critics to be the best of the series and it doesn't have that...
