They were glass. And previously contained aloe vera gel.

and they were original props from the movie the Rock which makes them extra cool....(cap jack inside joke among some of us about sniffin balls)

I'll check around with the game studios. I have some friends at Obsidian and work with a former WoW GM. I do know this, Blizzard really doesn't pay it's interns. There's such a huge line for volunteers, they just have to open the door and say "NEXT".

Thanks! I'm honestly not very hopeful about getting an internship at Blizz or another major game studio, as I don't think (at this time) that I'd end up in that field, but I'd love to spend a few months learning how games are put together and managed.

I can't speak for Atlanta, but as a mostly life long Southern California resident who was recently transplanted to Kansas, KC and LA/OC/IE are like night and day. KC has a little bit of congestion for a small portion of the day; SoCal has 100's of miles of congestion for most of the day. Just be prepared to leave much earlier than you would normally expect based on distance away and for god's sake, stay out of the fast lane if you can't do the speed limit. :lol

Glad to know. I had heard that it's much worse than anyone can really imagine until I'd been in it, but now I have some idea of it.

Thus reinforcing my point. Though I'm going to call USAA and see if it's any easier getting a rental if I have rental coverage with them, since I know that the age limit is for insurance reasons.

Good points, CN, and combining the trip is really the way to go. And you know my post was tongue-in-cheek.

But yeah - there is plenty to do and see in and around LA, and if you've already tentatively planned on the trip, then by all means. And not to get too philospophical on you, but do stuff like this when you still young and more free to do so. Its funny - when you're young, you have more time and freedom, but less cash. When you're old, its the other way around!

There are one or two hotels in the city of Lake Forest - one is a Holiday Inn, I believe, and should be fairly inexpensive. It is less than ten minutes from teh pary location (I know - its in my home town and on the way to the party for me!). Play your cards right, and you may even be able to arrange rides. Who knows...

I am / have been good friends with a level designer at Blizzard, but before you get worked up, I haven't been in touch with him for a couple of years, and it would not be appropriate at this stage for me to offer his name or to even contact him simply for this. He is a member here, but not very active. But it may not hurt to throw a call out in the OT for any industry pros.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Holiday Inn! I wasn't too worried about getting a ride from one of the locals or semi-locals, especially if I'm willing to pay more than the cost of the gas for the ride. I don't know how much else I'll have time for, though if I get a Blizzard tour I'll definitely find the time for it (which is why I'm planning stuff like that before I buy my plane ticket). Part of the motivation behind the trip is just getting out of Florida for a bit and seeing more of the country.

BTW, help a non-gamer out here. What's the big thrill about touring the Blizzard facilities? You know its just an office building, right? There aren't like rides, or costumed characters walking around. Just a bunch of dudes sitting in their cubes cranking out work.

:lol :lol :lol Yeah, let me know if anyone wants a tour of my real estate office as well. I WILL dress up like a character of choice, excluding Robs favorite "Slave Brad". :sick

Do we really need a play by play of travel plans? Just sayin'.

It's pretty much Mecca for anyone who loves Warcraft, Starcraft, or Diablo. Their office building is actually pretty cool from the pictures I've seen from tours. Lots of props, statues, and artwork from the games. Here you go:

So back to Prop Party basics!

What square footage of table space will we have?

Is it better to put our items "under glass" to avoid all of you touchy feelie type RPFers?

Will we be room bound for the entire day or will the food be served in the same room?

Group photo?

Prop Party? What Prop Party? Ohhhh, right.

What square footage of table space will we have? Tables are 3x6 feet and each person should have a table to themselves.

Is it better to put our items "under glass" to avoid all of you touchy feelie type RPFers? What ever your comfort level is. Also depends on the fragility of the prop being displayed.

Will we be room bound for the entire day or will the food be served in the same room? We are paying for a "buffet style" service but they have servers that will pop in and out for other food or beverages.

Group photo? I'm all for it, but I know Matt Munson doesn't show up in photos...kinda like a vampire.

I have NEVER known anything to "disappear" during a prop party. But then, maybe I lost count. Maybe some of the others can chime in with their experiences.

In general, people are VERY respectful of other peoples stuff, even if it's sitting out in the open. But then, it only takes ONE set of ham-hands to break the grips off your MR Han Solo blaster. TheDisturbance, this means you!!!!! :lol

I personally have very strong feelings about prop party etiquette. If i approach someones table and move in for a closer look at something, I put my hands behind my back so they don't think I'm about to grab something and finger pound it. I ALWAYS ask if it's OK if I pick something up. I am also more likely to ask THEM to pick it up and show me what they like about it. That way, there's no danger of me accidentally messing it up in someway that I didn't predict.

I like it when stuff is just sitting out on the table, as it lets you get a good look at it, and if you want them to flip it over or something, it's easier.

Usually, ALL of the folks at these things are regulars, and we all know each other. I think last time, ONE dude showed up who was a new guy, and there were no problems.

Exactly. We all know the rules about another man's rhubard. :) (at least I hope we do)

I have had a clasp snapped off a compass once... No big deal.

Seriously. Matt's dead on... That's the cool thing about this. We're abit of a fraternity, in a way. In fact this time I may not bring props. More interested in just hanging out; seeing folks.

Charles - you gonna make it?

Re: So Cal Prop Party!! SET FOR MARCH 6th 2011 **SEE 1st POST**

I think it's great that proper manners regarding looking at and/or handling props is being discussed, as apart from me, I know there's several other people coming for the first time (which, hey, is how you get to coming for the second and third times). While it might seem like common sense, it never hurts to discuss it.
