Jumping back in, as I picked up the answering machine... After looking at the machine in person, it was modified by the prop-makers to make the box 'taller' (deeper inside).
Looking at the image below, there's a 'spacer' about 1.5 inches tall that the cover is attached to, via small hinges and screws - which is not how the original machine is hinged.
I'm going to 3D print the gray spacer to get the look right. I've also guessed that the wires are just single strands of a gray IDE ribbon cable.

Just unboxed my latest eBay find. I have a service. Not sure what I need an answering machine for. I guess I'll just put it on my desk...between the pencil jar and the lamp.

I want to know if anyone every 3D printed that 1.5" spacer part? Think we could get that made?
I'm about to start on a replica (have the answering machine so far) and I'm about 80% sure I'm going to end up printing this piece as well as the black enclosure inside it. I haven't been able to identify the original source for the latter yet, so printing it is my fallback plan. If I do, I'll post the files here.
If I don't, I'll make the spacer from some sort of plastic sheet like the original likely was. You can see the join lines at the corners. Plus, the hinges are attached to a block of clear plexi, so it's a fair bet that's what they used.
I'm still printing the first test of this, so it's subject to tweaks. But if anyone's aching to get started... here's a 3D printable middle ring and a cover for the jack ports.

Updated models to fix a dimensional problem after test print. I think they (there's a 25mm high and 38mm high version) are as close as I'm gonna get them for now.

Well this thread has a been a HUGE help for me! A friend of mine mentioned that the black box from Sneakers would be his "dream prop" to own, and I thought "Hell, I can make that." Big shoutout to TankGrrl for the 3D print model of the interior casing and the 1.5" spacer!! Made this build a lot easier with that.
Ordered the answering machine off eBay ($20), gutted it, got a broken laptop from Goodwill for $5 to strip for parts (mainly for the circuit boards), had a friend doing the 3D print job for me, then it basically just cutting the circuit board pieces to size and supergluing/screwing everything together.
Only ran into 2 problems when putting it together:
- During the 3D printing, one of the corners of the spacing box delaminated a bit, so I had to sand it down, which left it a bit scuffed up. Not the end of the world, though.
- When I was installing the small hinges for the "lid", I was REALLY hoping that a single hinge in the middle would be enough for a sturdy support. Unfortunately, it wasn't, so I had to install a second one off to the side. In hindsight, definitely should've put them evenly spaced apart on the far left and far right edges. Ah well.
All in all, though, pretty happy with this for a quick (and fairly cheap). Going to leave it at my friend's doorstop in a box labeled "To (Friend), From SETEC ASTRONOMY".

Hooray! Glad it was useful. And great job populating the black box!
BTW, if anyone's interested. When I built mine I found that Krylon Metallic Shimmer was a fair match for the shell color.
UPDATE: Apparently they don't make the same nickel/silver Metallic Shimmer any more. I think it was K02338007 :/

Wow, that's a great build! I hadn't seen this thread and when I saw your first picture my first thought was- I used to have that EXACT answering machine! Back when answering machines were thing... I wonder if it's still in a box in storage...

I've embarked on the Little Black Box myself, but first thing's first, The Borofsky 'Man with Briefcase' from Cosmo's office!
Made in 3/4" MDF and painted white. Nothing fancy. I have the pattern if anybody wants it, and doesn't have a "buy an original from the famous artist" cash hanging around. There were several variations in Cosmo's office, one of them pierced and backlit, which is obviously the one I've made here.
Next up, research and thoughts on the "magic" circuit board from the Black Box : it helps to be an EE!

For anybody still chasing this muse, here's my best reference on the Black Box contents. I'm pretty sure that the tangle of wire is what we call in the business "bodge wire" which is thin solid gauge wire used for prototyping and fixing. Doesn't look like fiber optic to me. The little board in the center is, I think, not a Found board, but an assemblage built up on some kind of substrate on which somebody has drawn circuit-boardish shapes which don't make much sense electrically. But we can still identify many of the parts! We never see the other side of this thing, which makes me think it was not screen-ready.
