Show your Dr. Who props!

Re: Show your Dr. Who props!

Wow. That's quite the collection! Very nice.

I’ve recently completed my Second Doctor recorder in the form first seen in “Power of the Daleks”. Also pictured are the Moeck recorder from “Fury from the Deep”, the TARDIS key as seen in “The War Games” and my current close enough “The War Games” sonic.

And in this picture I think I have made a mother Doctor Who prop discovery. Back in June 2013 I successfully identified one of the Fourth Doctor’s Yo-yo as a Yellow Championship 99 Genuine Lumar Yo-yo. To my knowledge this brand has not been previously identified, although if I am mistaken in that feel free to say.

This version of his yo-yo was seen in “Genesis of the Daleks”, “Robots of Death” and “Talons of Weng-Chiang” - and I am sure others but at least clearly in these stories. I found the Lumar while searching for a close enough match for my collection and realized that it’s markings matched perfectly with these three stories. However while I was able find pictures of a real Lumar online back in June it wasn’t until the end of October that I finally found one on eBay which ended my four month long search (four months for the Fourth Doctor!) The one I found has has had it’s color altered a bit with age and needed to be restrung but that was pretty easy, so I won’t complain on either front.

In the three stories listed above the yo-yo is yellow and the text/design is in gold, although they appear black in “Genesis of the Daleks”but this is because the gold reflects light in certain angles or shading giving the appearance that the writing is black on film. You can see this happening in “Talons of Weng-Chiang” when the Doctor’s arm casts a shadow over the yo-yo. In both “Robots of Death” and “Talons of Weng-Chiang” the writing can clearly be seen to be gold.

Of course this is just one of Tom’s yo-yos, he did have at least two others. A light blue one in “Robot” and what appears to be a black one in “Ark in Space”. Though the Ark one could be the light blue one again or some other color, the scene where he uses it is darkly lit so it’s hard to tell.

Also pictured here is:
1) A Cricket Ball
2) Etheric Beam Locator
3) A Jewelers loupe
4) Mooncrest's Fourth Doctor TARDIS Key
5) RB Replicas Fourth Doctor sonic

In this picture you can see screen caps from “Genesis”, “Robots” and “Talons” as well as the real Lumar showing the face details and how they react to light reflection.

Re: Show your Dr. Who props!

Forgot to add last night two more items I recently got for my collection.

First is the Pandorica Opens canvas print with mod lodge simulated brush strokes by Risu

Re: Show your Dr. Who props!

I envy you guys your dedication. I split my attentions between Who Props, swords and armor, Firefly, Star Trek, Star Wars and a load of other stuff so my collections aren't nearly as Epic as yours. Bravo to you all.

Re: Show your Dr. Who props!

Might as well jump in on the fun and show my babies off.

My 11th hour sonic, and two ultimate edition 10th Doctor sonics. I have to say the quality of these are outstanding. The 11th hour is my favorite, I love the color of it.

I'm new to Doctor Who prop collecting (but not the show). My humble collection (UE 10th Sonic Screwdriver—my fave, Baker 4th Sonic, CO toys, and an 11th Sonic coming soon)…

Re: Show your Dr. Who props!

I got to see a UE 10th sonic this weekend from a friend who had just gotten one. The orientation of the head seemed odd to me, having a strut line up parallel to the slider groove, rather than having it more centered like TWC's sonic head is. But to be fair, I have not poured over every picture of the prop, nor have I had access to any real props, so it may very well be that way on the real thing, or at least some of them.

I know that MFX seemed to have very little regard for quality control and just stuck the heads on in whatever direction they fell to without any thought of uniformity. I know this as it took three sonics being shipped back and forth before I got one with a working LED, so each one had a head with a different orientation.

The UE untimate edition has probably the MOST beautiful paint job I have ever seen! The crackle was simply amazing and the slighltly grubby 'used' paint job was a nice touch.

Re: Show your Dr. Who props!

The paint job on the Ultimate editions are top notch, the attention to detail is outstanding. The 11th hour even has the pitting in the paint from the blue wash replicated. The simulated worn look on both the standard and 11th hour is a great touch.

Saw this photo from Nick Robatto's site, and looking at the middle prop in his hand, it has the strut parallel to the slider groove while the rest do not. So much for consistency then :)

No offence intended, but I am not sure what point you are making. Nick Robbato has not manufactured any 9th Dr or 10th Dr or The Eleventh Hour Sonic Screwdrivers for commercial sale. (Although he may have loaned a prototype to QMX.)

The ones in the photograph were presumably made by Nick for usage by David Tennant on-screen. Therefore, they may not be up to the same standard as props for sale, as they were made to be used on set.

Re: Show your Dr. Who props!

I think the point is the props were not consistent, so the various replica versions out there do not have to be either where the struts are concerned.

Re: Show your Dr. Who props!

Nice work with the yoyo Terrasolo!
Where did you get your articulated hand? That looks really cool and Auton-esque.
Also what are other Dr Who props you want?

Yes, thank you. Also, I have learned that photo of Robatto's I previously posted is of "the MFX at the top, Tennant B-prop in the middle and the A-prop at the bottom".

Thanks! I was very excited when I found it, as you can imagine. Seems a simple and maybe not exciting item to most but it's one the the things I remember fondly of the Fourth Doctor.

The hand I got at a local art supply shot. It's just an articulated hand for drawing from. Although it does seem plastic in the pic it is actually a wood hand.

Right now on my list is:
-The Second Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver
-The Eleventh Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver
-The Water Gun from "Fires of Pompeii"

After that I have a couple items in the works or getting upgraded etc. I have a few more ideas but need to find a way to make them or people with the skills to do so.

Just to set the record straight for the case of the 10th Doctor sonics. I get my information from a reliable source who has had the pleasure to handle the actual props, and I thank him for sharing the information. Robatto never built any of the screen used 10th Doctor sonics, he only maintained and painted them. As for the orientation of the struts. In the picture from top to bottom we have the MFX, the B prop, and the A prop. The slider is aligned with the middle of the window on the A prop. For the B prop the slider was aligned with the struts.

Thank you for clarifying your point.

I forgot about who manufactured what. Apparently, according to another source (a propmaker's blog from June 2010; not Nick's), the season 30 / series 4 Sonic was a new build by Nick Robatto.

Whereas the one used in season 29 / series 3 was a cannibalised version (bits from earlier seasons sonics) allegedly made by one Mark Cordroy.

Is this correct?

This is 100% correct.

Nick rebuilt the two that you have in that photo. Only the Aztec heads were reused on those (that information is shown in DrWho Confidential and was specified on the old rubbertoe website ;))

Neither one of the Sonics in that photo are the one that Tennet has.

As for the June 2010 blog, it was written 3.5 years ago. New information has come to light since then. Part of it being the discovery that Nick Robatto never built any of the screen used 10th Doctor sonics.

As for the Aztec heads, the original maker stated that they were never reused.

Good luck with the water pistol! It is very elusive, but I do know it is a Splashinator Luger type.

I have a couple of old folding Kodak Brownie cameras on their way to me, similar to the one used by the 7th Dr in Remembrance of the Daleks.
