Show off your MDF props!

It's best to prime it, i seal the edges with dilute PVA glue and then use a primer designed for MDF before painting.

I built the outer edge for my 1:1 Stargate project from MDF. I cut seven 18mm formers and skinned these with 6mm MDF. I then brushed on three coats of resin and then sanded it smooth. I just have to add all the little shapes to it then I can mold it in fiberglass.

Huh. We build all our theater sets primarily out of MDF, but I never thought to use it for prop/costume builds. After seeing some of this stuff though, I clearly need to try a few things...

I particularly like the Separator. \m/

Love the Hatches and the borderlands gun!

Been off of the boards for a while, but Im cooking this thing up right now. Mastered out of MDF and some styrene, as always.

Hi all.
Just thought I would post these images of a project I started on back in April this year. I have been wanting to add a Beretta 1934 to my collection on Movie and TV related props for a while. These images are from a book I had, and they were the inspiration to scratchbuild one.
More to follow if the upload works.

Hi again guys.
Here are the last pics of my build of the Beretta 1934. I love working with MDF as it is easy to glue, carve and sand, although one needs to wear a dust mask when sanding it. Great to see some other fantastic creations come out of MDF from you all.
Keep up the good work.

Here's some of the MDF work I've been doing lately

Nerfinstien:

Great looking gun. Might not be perfest replica, but I like it. With every build you make it will get better and better as you work in your media. Haven't worked in MDF for anything but regular construction projects but really want to try this. I like your weathering, keep at it. This is an idea blog and I really like what you are doing.

i have just finished this All seeing, all knowing.jpg , which started out based on the jedi training remote

I used black valchromat which is just like MDF but denser and nicer to work with as it doesnt fall apart when using very small pieces. i then rubbed it down with danish oil which has given a nice natural sheen.

I don't want to be a Whiny Wendy or Negative Nancy, but I've been wondering about MDF and safety...

I get that I should be making major cuts to MDF outdoors, and ensuring I don't get the dust inside me. (Although, the major construction union here in Australia recommends only cutting MDF in a controlled room environment, collecting the dust, and absolutely not opening the doors. But then they're talking about cabinet box making and the like.)

But what about small-piece work with MDF. Such as filing bevels, and making small cuts? Do I need to take special precautions other than ventilation and a dust mask?

Also, retail Australian-made MDF is supposed to be rated as LFE (low formaldehyde emission). Anyone happen to know if Bunnings' MDF is LFE? (I'd ask them but not really sure they'd have a clue; Bunnings staff are pretty friendly, but one lady told me that "MDF is the new asbestos"...)
