Setting up a new workshop, many pics

Today i got my newest toy. :love

A Vertex rotary table (+ chuck):

These things are used to drill holes with exact definated degrees between them on a circular way. Like this (a bought piece, just for visualisation):

Now that's cool :thumbsup I could really use one of those right now for a set a gears I'm trying to make.

Congrats on such a workshop!

For making gears i would buy this add-on

It minimizes any possible mistakes.

Thanks.

As my english is probably not really the best to explain such things, i made today some pics for a better understanding. :)

You drill a hole:

Then you move the table:

And drill the next hole:

vertex006.jpg

And another:

vertex007.jpg

Until you have drilled the complete row.

vertex008.jpg

Then you rotate the table and do the next line of holes:

Repeat this until all holes are drilled:

And after some light sanding you get this:

One possibility you could use it for:

Holy S**T Michael

:D:D:D

I have the same addiction to tools and machines as some ladies for shoes. :lol

By my own shame, i have to say i just noticed we have some more good equiped guys here at Rhineland Palatinate ....

Great place :thumbs up

appr. 50 km south of you - close to Koblenz

I´m not from Rhineland, that is 150-200Km south of me.

Sorry for this - by mistake i expected you located at Trier
Anyhow, great tools !

Recently i sold my Mini-Lathe, so i needed to get a new one.

I drove saturday to/through the Netherlands, to buy a lathe. I found and bought one in the store, but i ended with a bigger and more expensive one than planned. ;) (Have a look how tiny the Mauser receiver is)

Workbench023.jpg

140cm overall length now, to 70cm the old one. 230 Kg now, to 40Kg the old one. 2 vario gears, one with 50 to 850 rpm with higher torque, and the second with 110 to 1800 rpm with more speed. It can handle parts up to 280mm dia and 700mm length. :cool
I have indirect access to a lot of big machines (conventional and cnc), as a friend has a machine building company, but i prefer to only ask for a favor if really needed - nothing beats to have your own tools.

It´s a older house with tigher stairway than todays houses - so it was a pain to get it down in the basement, first a tight 90° turn from the corridor to these steps,
Workbench008.jpg

We damaged some of the steps, i need to charge a mason, to get it fixed.

then a 180° U-turn and these steps
Workbench009.jpg

Then a 90" turn, through the door, an then left
Workbench010.jpg

Into the machine room.

Lifting it on the bench with hardly enough room for us 3 guy to stand and to handle it:
Workbench011.jpg

And on it´s new place, next to the mill. The wrench on the handwheel is a 17 or a 19mm one. :love
Workbench016.jpg

We 3, big and strong guys, were totally exhausted when we had it on it´s place, finally. After that we had a long barbecue in my garden yesterday evening/night, the 2 helpers absolutly deserved it. Today i spent some hours with cleaning and adjusting.

With some tools it was close to 3000$ - now my hobby account is completly drained and needs to recover first :lolNext saturday we have our 17th anniversary, and after buying me this i better then have something nice for her, too ;) - so, no money left to order any new material, yet. :confused

Now i need to get some practice with it - it has automatic cross + longitudinal feed accompanied by various other functions, so i better know without thinking first what shift lever engages which action.

Love the tools. Hows the mill machine doing for you? I Just ordered
the SX3 mill but I really took a heavy look at getting this type as
well. I think I picked the SX3 because I hear it's pretty easy to convert
to CNC which is on my to do list. The lathe looks awesome as well. I have
a 9 x 20 lathe. You run out of space fast on a mini lathe.
For any member here that is thinking of getting a lathe or mill, now
is the time to get them. I bought my 9 x 20 about 5 years ago and a new
one is double what I paid. Just a little free advice .

Hi Don,

it´s doing fine for me, this is a version with MT3 insted of MT2, and 130 Kg instead of 115. I decided for this one cause it is a well known machine in the german hobby-machinists-community, so you can easily find a answer if there is ever a problem. I never planned to cnc it, but i know that there are plug and play cnc-upgrade-sets available, for example from Optimum.

SX3 is a nice mill - do you have the version with MT3 or with SK30? (R8 is also very common in the US, right? Next to unused here). One of the main reasons i didn´t choosed a SX3 was the handwheel for the height-adjustment of the head - it points directly in my back/kidney. Due to my small room i would hit it with every second step back from the lathe - did that once:cry, don´t need it again. Another was the depth, as mine is not so deep i could build the bench less deep, wich gave me more room in the middle to walk/work. Are it´s 1700-1800 rpm no problem for you? Mine does 2200-2300 rpm, and sometimes i wish it had 3000, for small stuff.

Aye, the prices go up every year. :unsure

Hi Michael. I ordered the R8 spindle taper. I really don't care about
having a different taper but my collets are all R8 so I'm ready to tool
up when it arrives. I don't like the x3s' spindle speed being so slow
I hate it when a mill hammers when it cuts due to slow speeds but
I may see if I can get some different pulleys to speed it up. I
may order the longer table and lead screw from LMS as well , that
way I could put the mill vice and the rotary table on at the same time.
Anyway I've heard nothing but good compliments on the type of
mill you have and I'm sure it will serve you well.

Have a good one,
Don
