Setting up a new workshop, many pics

Some of you might remember the pics of my Workshop i showed in my buildthreads :

It worked perfectly for modelbuilding, nearly all my starship-masters were born here. But as you can see, after starting to do more and more props (especially the metal ones) it was soon messed and cramped as on the pics above. I love to work in well cleaned and good organized workspace (well, i´m german :$) , so i lived with it and did my best from the situation.

Additional to this unsatisfying situation my modelbuilding mill was to small for nearly any metal work:

So i sold it last fall, and started to look out for a new one that suits better my new needs.

And a few weeks ago i made a decision and ordered a new machine.
While waiting for it´s delivery i finally noticed that it would not fit in my "old" shop, yeah, i completly forgot about that point when setting the parameters for buying a new machine. :confused:lol

I had an old and nearly unused corner in my basement

which i used mainly for painting with spraycans when it´s to cold outside (or when i´m to lazy to walk upstairs :love )

It is only 2m x 2m, but that has to be enough - nothing beats a good organized workshop, if kept proper and clean. :cool

Re: Setting up a new workshop

Not much time until delivery of the new mill, so i immediatly made a plan how can i do the best out of the small room, then i started the framework:

The new electric components were mounted, then i covered the walls with the same stuff as the other workshop, white laminated chipboard (as used for kitchen-cabinets). Also used kitchen worktops for the bench - these materials help to clean up after making a mess:

The new toy arrived - and i wasn´t ready with the shop, but far enough to have a place for it :

After that i decided to add some additional walls to help to keep the metal chips in a small area instead of carrying them all over the house - the miss is not amused when sharp metal chips are cutting into the carpet or any other stuff on the floor. And when the miss is not happy she will take the needed actions for me feeling not happy, too. ;)

First test with all the machines:

Now, some time later, i have arranged everything (for the moment, time will tell if a rearrangement is needed/better):

I assume i will buy a bigger lathe, sooner or later - then it is planned to put it where now the mill is, and the mill where now the lathe is.
But for now this is the actual status. For sure the drillpress will be translocated in my garage in the next future (all it can do, the mill can do too, just better), and some reworking like additional shelves or cabinets will be done - but first i need some daily practice to find out where everything is needed/has to be stored.

As you see, even in a small space it is possible to install a shop (and 2m x 2m is small) - not always a big room is needed if everything is well organized. :)

Re: Setting up a new workshop

A really good side benefit is ...... to gain more workspace in my assembling shop:

A place to store the running projects in a organized way, without getting unwanted dents and scratches:

(Yeah, i still need to clean the material and debris (from the lathe) under the bench - i set this new place up yesterday only. :$ )

A place for the "daily greeblies and materials":

And a proper place to work on the props:

I´m pretty satisfied now, i think it´s a big improvement to the "before".

I love spending some time in the shop, after sitting all the day in my office and making decisions - it´s relaxing. :) And it is so much more satisfying to have the work done by yourself instead of just buying another completed dustcatcher. :D

Re: Setting up a new workshop

Please? :cry You won't even notice me! I'll just sit under your new worktop and only come out at night to tidy up :angel

That sounds like having a gremlin in the basement .... what happens if you find some food after midnight? :eek

Very nice. Out of interest how big is that room? You've pretty much got everything laid out as I was planning to do my garage over the summer.

Machine shop: 2m x 2m

Assembling shop: 2,5m x 3,5m

I couldn´t use my garage, i need it for the tools for my cars. But if you can, you will have more space than i, i assume. :)

Thanks guys, it´s really fun to work there. :)

Luckily my wife is very understanding for all my hobbies and spleens, spread over the house - not many would accept that in this level. :$:lol

I JUST LOVE IT :love I wish I had such a workshop! And looking at some of those pics, I've felt in love with a few props :$

I think we all wish we had a space like that! I have to do all ma shiet in the kitchen!

+1 :D

Don´t laugh, but that feeling still comes to me, too, every time i switch on the light and go into the shop, seeing the sweet stuff waiting for me. Beeing in my 40s, but i´m still like a child sometimes. :lol

Looks fantastic! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks.

My pleasure, maybe it helps to encourage one or another to make the start from "me poop fellow, i have no place to build" to "i will do it, and start to setup myself a little corner for it".

This was my first corner to build stuff, you couldn´t really turn around yourself without hitting something:

And guess what - that is exactly the same part of the basement i now use for my machine-shop. :cool
