May have something to show this weekend if all goes well. Been ill these past few days, so have been working ultra slow, but steadily forward. Simply have nothing worth showing right now.

Well, I'll most definitely have something to show by tomorrow. Just the basic shape without much detailing. Once done with this I'm quitting this sculpting thing for good. No point in fooling myself anymore.

If you're anything at all like me (and a lot of other people I know), then you are your own worst critic. I know all the "mistakes" and "flaws" in everything I do. But most people never notice them.

So don't be so quick to give up. Sculpting, like anything we do, requires a bit of practice. (Unless you're one of those super gifted S.O.B.s who make the rest of us sick with envy. :sick :lol )

So stick with it. I'm really curious to see what you've done so far. :thumbsup

I don't have much to show either because of a really busy schedule this past week. Right now mine looks like a ball of sculpty with eye sockets and some crude features. :confused

But I'm planning on doing more this weekend. And maybe by then I'll have something to share with you.

Richard

Well, looking forward to seeing yours.

Basically, I'm a slow worker (not with this sculpt though, that moved pretty quick), but all my previous work is cracking and falling apart and I'm still not finished with many of them and I can't repair them and then keep working and I did bake them and that's when all the fun began. So basically, this'll be my last sculpt.

Well, I said I'd post some pics after I did a bit more work on this. And here's what I've come up with so far.

It still needs a bit of work, but I think I'm off to a pretty good start. What do you guys think?

Richard

I like it! In side profile particularly it looks even more lifelike than the ones used in the film. Keep it up. :thumbsup

If I may make a suggestion, I would raise the nose higher up on the face and thereby making the upper mouth area a bit longer.

I can honestly say that I grossly miscalculated the work I was doing, giving the sculpt a way too large lower chin. I may be able to salvage it afterwards by sanding it down, but it does currently not look like the monkey sculpt from the film. I will of course finish it, but I'm definitely NOT happy about this, as the whole thing was going fine, until I hurried to bake it before checking proportions out properly to create a foundation to build the rest of the face on. Missing eyes and right cheek area and the severed piece of the top of the skull and the ears.

Currently in the oven:

I'm considering breaking all the facial work off and starting again, giving it a more accurate profile. It's a lot of wasted sculpey, but I can just cut it up and use it as filler in something else. I had a perfect profile going before stupidly adding that one extra roll where it wasn't needed, skewing the whole look.

I'll give it some thought in the morning. Too late now.

Thanks for the suggestion TMG. You're definately right about the nose. :thumbsup

I'm reworking it now and it's looking much better. Thanks again for the good advice.

And by the way, you're not the only one a bit too quick on the bake. Fortunately sculpty is pretty easy to work, even after it's baked. :eek :rolleyes

I think the eyes and brow are pretty close to right on, but the nose and mouth both look too large to me (nose - correct shape but too big; mouth - correct shape but too wide)

But I'm merely going off one-dimensional photos...

Keep up the great work! :)

Well. If I were to ever attempt this again, I would definitely get some better working materials and a better approach. Trying to build up a hollow shell gives too large margins of error. Though it is presentable and people will likely recognize it as the monkey brains from TOD... I'm most definitely disappointed with the current result.

The Jay Leno chin is the worst offender. Once done with the majority of the sculpting I'll try either sanding it down and rebuild the lower jaw and chin as that is what's throwing off the proportions, but this will make it way too small given the measurements of an original.

TMGarlic, another thing you can do which will really help it look right proportionally, is to fill in the outside corners of the eyes and brow, making the eys smaller, rounder, and less elliptical. They're just way too wide for its head, and it's an easy fix to make, as you shouldn't really need to grind anything away.

And hey, it may not look screen accurate to the original, but if I saw it on a shelf, I'd immediately know what it was, and gleefully shout, "Mmmm chilled monkey brains!" You did a really good jib.

Yeah. Just hard to switch off the scale you've been working with in your head that would have been great if I hadn't ****ed up with the chin. Good point about the eyes and I'll be sure to change that.

Thanks for the input PH. :thumbsup

I've reworked the nose and have narrowed the width of the mouth. And now I'm even happier with the results.

Why is it that I didn't see these things until TMG and PH pointed them out? Maybe I just get too fixated on the project and overlook some of the finer details. Thankfully I've got friends who are willing to set me straight. :)

Well, enough rambling, here's some pics. :lol

If you get the auction pictures - easily found with a google search - you'd get perfect reference. Personally there's something wrong with the cheeks, they need to blend in more with the upper mouth and across the bottom of the eyes and connect with the bridge of the nose. I found a single side-view of the monkey - also found through google, that is a tremendous help when getting the profile to be more accurate.

Here's my attempt at making the eyes smaller and rounder to correspond with a smaller eye shape. Need to blend the left cheek into the upper mouth area better and add some detailing along that cheek as well before baking. Just wanted some opinions on the eye fix first.

It's actually incredibly fascinating to see how you tackle your sculpt differently than I'm tackling mine... and how different the sculpts are, based on the same original prop. Most interesting to see how these progress side by side.
