Sculpt the temple of doom monkey

So, the best way to do these is to do them hollow... either in the sculpt or in the casting procedure as hollow molded resin or rotocast?

FWIW, Tom's were cast latex. On my "hero" build, I inserted a plastic cup on the inside, (lip of the cup aligned with the rim of the opening in the head), then filled the remainder with resin. So theoretically, it can be used like the screen props (though I never have).

I've been able to get a few screen grabs from my dvd. And some shots of original props off the web. I'm willing to give it a try, and if you guys like what I come up with I can always drop it in some rubber.

For what it's worth, the originals were cast in foam. It looks like it may even be a type of expanding foam, and then "skinned" with a thickish layer of latex paint. The inner skull was hollowed out, and a shallow bowl then glued into it.

Not according to Propstore stating that it's a foam filled vac-formed shell.

Oh... didn't see this. Didn't mean to step on any toes... :eek

Oh, didn't read that. That makes even more sense, and explains the lack of detail.. You can definitely tell it's solid foam inside. It's easily visible on the underside of the skull lid, and around the edges of the glued in bowl. And it makes sense that they may have possibly inserted a couple with plastic eyes while scooping out the foam in the top of the head to make room for the bowl.

No problem mate. :thumbsup

I've decided to do one for myself, and if the guys here like it I'll see about molding it. But if you do one and they like it better then I'll drop out and let you have it.

There's more than enough room on this board for all the talent that's here. And I'm smart enough to know there's people here that can sculpt rings around me. I just want to see what I can do.

concerning the eyes, leave it blank, then we can decide whether to paint it or not.
If anyone has seen KRAMSTAAR AMAZING idol , he actually painted these in the head!!!
Believe it or not.
so for me which ever way but leave the eyes out.
as far as 2 guys would like to do them , why not ?
lets see some progress pics mates!!

Cool. Yeah, I don't mind some friendly competition. Looking forward to seeing your version. :thumbsup

I look forward to seeing what everyone does - been wanting a monkey head myself.

I've only got this guy:

:lol

And a nice hollow head can be filled with this:

Slowly making my way forward. Tried one style of doing it, but it turned out to be an impossible approach. I had gotten rather far when realizing that, with several revisions, after having worked for about 6 hours on shaping and refining, I finally had to calli it quits on that approach. So yesterday evening I started from the top down, starting with the opening first and working my way down the sides, building up the skull, slice by slice (roughly). It basically just look like an ashtray right now, but... hopefully I'll have something to show in a few days.

Going for a basic skull shape first and then adding details later with other mediums.

Probably pretty stupid to try to sculpt the thing as a hollow piece... but hey... that's me.

It would be easier, it seems to me, to sculpt the master as a solid piece, as the castings will be produced hollow later.

Looking forward to seeing your progress.
