Screen Accurate Millennium Falcon Cockpit (CG Model)

Hey folks, thanks for all the compliments on the Linear Falcon!

Jaitea, I had thought about doing a McQuarrie Falcon like yours for a long time, but you're doing such a good job, you kind of satisfied the itch of making one. Keep up the good work there!

Modelcitizen, I'd love to see where you're at on that guy. I've got some areas that need to be solved, and I'd love to see how someone else approached them.

Greeble_Gremlin, I did pull the stormtrooper off the internet. Heh, thanks for saying he probably looks good because of the surroundings. In truth, I knew to hunt for a trooper that looked halfway decent, since people know their armor around here. But I'm always afraid someone's going to go "nice models, but that stormtrooper is crazy inaccurate, what is he doing there?!?"
Your Tie-Pilot is looking great.

Valdi, thanks!

and here's a ton of engine block I got banged out.

probably not even 3/4 done. Phwew! Sometimes I secretly wish they'd put less detail on her...

Thanks for the reply Stinson,

I have never had the courage (or perhaps obsession is a better word ;) ) to Model the exterior of the Falcon, never mind the inside too!
There's just soo many parts!
I am crazy enough to take on this subject...
Test Batch.jpg

but it's nothin' comapred to the Greeble intensity of the MF !! Kudoz man!
I'm curious...have you gathered many of the donor kit parts for reference?

Most folks don't realize that, in many ways recreating something in 3D in the computer is akin to scratch-building every part by hand with no "head-start" of pre-made styrene kit parts.
You "Analog" modelers have so easy... :rolleyes

I know it was not on the full-size set but...
-Could you use an accurate rendition of 70's era Kool-shade?

I finally mentioned one of my "Mad Scientest" projects on this thread:
http://www.therpf.com/f10/koolshade-alternative-187896/

I have a Low-Poly version of the Kool-Shade ("Low" being a "relative" term perhaps medium-poly is better) that is suitable for CG/render work. (rather than for SLA/RP purposes)

I could send you a sample suitable for tile-ing if it would be helpful to this kool project -for the engine deck & cockpit-neck of course

I apologize if the link smacks of a shameless plug

One good thing about 3D modleing, the more 3D/CG projects one does, and I sure StarKiller is finding the same: you start amassing quite a Virtual Library of Greebles/Kit parts
comes in handy on future projects.

not to derail my own thread any further, but I got thinking about what it would look like if I threw the Linear Falcon into the Deathstar Docking Bay.

check out the results here: Stinson's All Things Star Wars Blog: Millennium Falcon: what might have been

Thorst, thanks!

Kyuzo, I've thought about that Y-wing, but I never got around to it. Maybe one day. I have toyed with the idea of doing mock-ups of all the battles in ANH with Colin Cantwells prototype models. Again, maybe one day.

Greeble gremlin, I've been using the RPF thread dedicating to IDing kit parts for the 5' Falcon. Occasionally I'll actually do some virtual kitbashing. If I know a big part came from this or that tank or truck, I'll find one modeled online and import it. So I do get some relief from having to model every single part from scratch. Though I will always hand it to practical model makers, those guys are awesome, and my virtual efforts are a pale comparison.

I've been giving it a lot of thought for some time now, and I've decided to throw my hat in the ring and Join the 5-foot Falcon club.
Inspiration from this thread had a lot to do with that decision. -Thanks
I'm glad to hear that your mesh is based mainly on the ANH Faclon
it will be a long slow build as my schedule and budget allow...
I hope with my 2D & 3D CG skills I can contribute something to help others in Falcon builder's club.

I agree about real-world analog Modelers, working with Steve N. and others on the Studio Scale BOP I was amazed at how good those guys where at identifying kit parts..and sometimes form the blurriest of pictures!
Recently at John C's workshop his, various builds under-way made want to put down my mouse and grab an Exacto knife.
Some of his styrene cutting and scribing looked so "tight" you would swear he had it lasercut.

Your Hanger bay looks great! I don't know why they changed it in the re-makes
That ramp looks like it came rite out of the Star Wars Sketchbook

Greeble Gremlin,

thanks for the info about the Kool-shade parts. I think even your low poly version would be too much of a strain on my system right now, but thank you for the offer. I think I may try to model something closer from your koolshade thread though, for the engine grills. The only reason I wouldn't add it to the cockpit collar would be that they used something else on the Full-scale set (not sure what though). My main reference for the exterior has been the full scale set on ANH, and then I'm referencing the 5-footerall the parts you can't see, or that weren't completed, on that set.

Good luck on your build! I wish I could build one of those myself, but I have to say I don't mind avoiding the cost (in the pocket/living space/sanity). But the result will be well worth it!

and yeah, I definitely used the Joe Johnston blueprints out of the Star Wars Sketchbook for the boarding ramp.

Thanks.

actually the changes in both the "special" editions, AND the matte painting in 1977, drive me crazy. If you can find it, take a look at the original painting for the effects shot. Its surprisingly bad. All kinds of things have been added that have nothing to do with the way the movie set looked and the perspective is all kinds of weird on the Falcon itself.

The composition popped into my head over lunch. I had all the models built (or mostly built), so I thought I'd give it a try. Not too shabby, even if I say so.

Heh, those TIEs are deceptive. The geometry is almost as simple as it gets. In fact, the texturing is nothing more than a Joe Johnston sketch superimposed and colorized. Not bad right? I have TIE fighter cockpit blueprints that I look at now and again. would be kind of fun to do a complete TIE inside and out... but that's a Whole 'nother can of worms.

Where did you get the TIE BluePrints?
Can you recommend the "Star Wars: the blueprints" book,?
I've been on the fence about getting it on Amazon

Regarding the TIE interior; Jim has some nice meshes that have been around for years
They may not be 100% screen accurate but the have incorporated many elements from what little info there is on the full size sets.

Star Wars TIE Fighter with pilot, 3DS Projects In Work #4, 3D MeshWorks, 3DS, NASA, Reference Photos

You make me want to start a similar 3D build of the full size X-wing Cockpit (from Another Hope)
I'm sure it has many similar parts such as the buttons,Vickers-reading light, and Graflex Strobe.

Just figuring out what they used to make the targeting computer alone, would be a big challenge (for me at any rate)
You guys are so good a discovering the source of all the little pieces ..amazing

Yes, got the TIE cockpit blueprints out of the Rinzler Blueprints book. I do recommend that book highly, it's got so much great stuff, and I've used it constantly. Wish the pricetag wasn't so high, but I got mine as a birthday present from a bunch of friends who banded together. Good folks!

Hey guys, check it out: Back on topic for the first time in years!

a number of pages back, we wondered if the levers on the overhead canopy were the same things that Ben turns to deactivate the tractor beam,

star-wars4-movie-screencaps.com-10034.jpg

which would also be the same things that are mounted around the tactical display on Yavin IV.

star-wars4-movie-screencaps.com-13383.jpg

Wavey did some great research and found some crucial parts. I finally got something built and applied to the cockpit canopy.

So far... I think we have our part.

Below is pre-effects shot used in the approach to the death star. And below that is the matte I'm about to use on a new render of the cockpit. These are matching pretty well in my opinion. Thoughts?

If anyone has a clearer image of the pre-effects shot, or the silhouetted traveling matte, I would be much obliged.
