Scratchbuilt T-68 X-Wing Heavy Gunner

I vacuum formed over a cheap metal torch end. I had originally planned to mould and cast this but I don't have enough rubber to waste on something like this, I need it all for my MPC Upgrade kit at the moment so I decided to go the cheap and nasty route and vac form it instead.
The definition is poor but I'm not fussed, It'll look fine once I've panel-lined it and added details :)

The notches cut out are for the thrusters themselves, I've made them from old pens which are the exact diameter as the FM 1/72 nozzles which I've cast for my own use.

Coincidentally the shape of the parts I've vacuum formed seem to be almost exactly the same shape as the Ep.VII X-Wing engines.......hmMMM.....nice.....

I haven't forgotten about this build! It's just been in storage for a while so I decided it was time to get back on it. I recently bagged a set of beaten up MPC/ERTL kits from ebay, a snap-kit X-wing being among them, so I've been using the hull pieces to add to the T-68

I filled the wing cavity with a mess of greebles but you'd never be able to see them unless you looked very carefully underneath the closed wings. I thought it was worth doing, even if I only paint them black (just for the silhouette of detail)

I scrapped the vac-form cowling idea and just went with the MPC engines, with spare FM kit details.......I decided it made the whole build feel more 'original trilogy'

It's got a great profile I think, it's a a proper chubby. Nice and heavy feeling

This is great, but why did you make it in such a small scale? surely 1/48 or 1/24 would of been better?.

love those sketches mate very talented, looking forward to seeing this finished and painted

:)

Thanks dude!
I've only got a small room and all my SW collection is in 1/72nd.....also I've got a lot of parts for 1/72nd scale work like figures, astro droids, and casts from various SW 1/72nd kits

Still not sure what colours to go with even though painting is a way off......red squadron? blue squadron? gold? green? No idea!!

Maybe try something new :) orange black and white always works for me

Haystack, I'm pretty sure the turret ball is from a Grumman Avenger kit; looks just like it with the circular port in it.

Very interesting piece; I love how these threads 'float to the top' occasionally. Cheers!
