Saving Private Ryan Map

Ok with D-day approaching I'm watching SPR and I spot a map that looks similar to one that I have in a WW2 map book. Thinking that would look cool on the wall, I scanned the map and Id like to tweak it to look more like the one in SPR. There's even a bridge crossing the Merderet River that could be labeled as Ramelle. So any advice I can use to transform my scan into something better? All I have is Paint.net or Gimp. (My skills mostly lie with Autocad type drawing programs an ex-drafter) Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

here's my map scan

Nice, but keep in mind, the map you have is a historical map with the units already marked in place. A tactical map would only be printed with land features and border markings that never change. The other info is written over top of that by the user.

I know this is an old topic, but for those that still might have an interest on the subject, Jerry at What Price Glory sells reproduction copies of the Army maps from all the Normandy "hot spots," including Carentan for $12. I have a couple of sets and they're nice quality.
