Round2 Producing a 1/350 Star Trek TMP K'Tinga

The separate Photo Etch due seems to have more pieces that then one in the light kit. That's not cool if it ends up having more.
The aftermarket etch is a supplement to R2's, with different parts. R2 forbade Paragrafix from making a set with the same parts.

Forbade? It was a contracted business deal, no? where it was agreed that R2 would include the small para in the kit thereby forcing folks that want those pieces to buy the entire lighting kit and (IMHO) at a silly price. Im a capitalist but I'm paying more for the brass and LEDs than for the kit. Im not a complainer but this feels like an unnecessary money grab. Just my .02. And thats from a fan of both product lines.

I think people might just be overpaying for their kits?

I bought the lighting kit for $60 on cultTVman. That's basically $30 for the photoetch (which is designed to work with the lights so no, they shouldn't sell it separately) and $30 for a basic lighting kit.

That's not only reasonable it's cheaper than the vast majority of similar aftermarket parts.

The lighting kit is $120 on amazon. If you paid that that isn't Round2's fault.

Cult has the cheapest price for the light kit at $64.99 plus shipping. Dog bless Cult for being a rock star. Whether that's still reasonable is personal preference. I can find 50-piece bundles of pre-wired LEDs on Amazon for between $15-$20. Throw in a slow blinker and couple red LEDs from Evans Designs for $2.25 and we're still around $25 -- and that would still leave me with 20 or so LEDs left over for other projects. If the K'tinga is the one and only model I was planning to build, yeah, maybe I'd get the lighting kit. If they offered the etch separately, I'd get that in a heartbeat.

It's all subjective. To me, the electronics in the kit are next to worthless. The LEDs are the wrong color IMHO and the flashers are just plain wrong. So you are paying $60 for the photoetch, some red clear plastic, and a battery box.

Your mileage may vary.

The complaint -- and it's minor, but valid -- is that R2 could and should offer the PE separate from the LEDs. As consumers, we can and should discuss the comparative worth of a new product offering. That's what model forums are for. No one is calling R2 evil or saying they're bad people. In fact, there's universal praise and street dancing for the kit itself. I'm a really good dancer.

I agree it would be nice if the PE was offered separately, but they made that decision and it was theirs to make. So that's the way it shall be. . .

Oh, and as far as I know ParaGrafix did not make the PE that's in the lighting kit. They do make a separate aftermarket "add-on" set though.

No, Para is only allowed to make a set of additional parts, not parts included in the R2 set.

I wouldn't have a problem with the light/etch combo set if the lighting was correct, but to spend $60+ for the set then replace all the bulbs sucks. And I want the etch, so...

Already bought it hence the review. Complaining is as American as Thanksgiving and I will do it when and where I like.:)

If we didn't complain about things, these forums would be a tenth the size they are.

What are supposed to do, build models? ;)

Got my copy yesterday. Model; not lighting kit.

Happy with it - smaller than I hoped / expected, but by only 10% - 15% or so...

Was it mentioned that this kit was a bit smaller than the unlicensed fiberglass version?

I don't know how it compares to the unlicensed one. Round2 used the official numbers for the length. Some people think that the official numbers are small. I think it matches up nicely, but again, your mileage may vary.

I'll may be able to post some side-by-sides if folks want me to...

Though want to keep the focus on this fantastic new kit, and not really highlight the former.

Ordered mine a few days ago. As a coincidence, I have just started on my Captain Cardboard TOS Klingon D-7. I am curious to see how the two compare, size-wise.

If that's the studio scale kit, stated as 1/305, it will be a bit larger than the K'T'Inga.

On the unlicensed kit, the boom is 19" long (not sure if the start and end points are exactly the same as the PL kit) and the the bridge deck is 4 7/8" across.

The resin kit is not accurate in shape or proportions. The PL kit is as "dead on" to the studio miniature as I could possibly get without access to 3D scan data. We even did a photogrammetry analysis to verify the shapes and proportions were correct.

With the Kronos One version, are there any physical differences to the ship? Or is it just the paint finish and the etched brass ornamentation?
