Rogue One Vader costume

Would love to see an anthology movie about Vader hunting down Jedi.
That would be one kickass SW movie. ...It would make for a fantastic 2 hour 30 minute epic Vader action/adventure, and you could lead it right up into the moments before Rogue One takes place - where Vader has to give up his hunt for Ben Kenobi, and take on the Rebels swiping the DS plans.
Seriously - Disney has so much material to run with right now, it's not even funny.

I'm not obsessively nitpicky about Vader, don't know all the costume details and variations, and he still looked super weird to me. Like a slightly off fan costume. Honestly I thought ROTS Vader looked better (though in terms of dialogue, equally corny. Choke on your aspirations. Egad.)

The scene when Vader kicks butt made me forgive all the other foibles, both with costume & dialogue. My only complaint at that moment, was I wish it was longer.

Agree the red drew too much attention to itself. My kids were super thrown by it. In ANH you kinda have to be looking for it. R1 Vader looks like KITT.

Saw the movie yesterday and regarding Vader i have to say that this costume looks indeed like crap as Gino once said. I never expected to share the same opinion with him but he is absolutely right. Its not only the cheap lookin helmet with this huge neck extention...also the actor they have chosen is totally off in his proportions. The few scenes with him could have been great but this cheesy costume nearly ruined them for me. Its a miracle why they failed with the actor and costume although the focus was so on Vader and his appearence and the whole rest of the costumes looked excellent..,,sorry i dont get it.

I've been thinking more about this. Fundamentally i don't think there is really anything wrong with the costume. I think if you took the R1 costume with you in a time machine and went back and dressed 1977 David Prowse in it it would be Darth Vader.
I think one of the biggest issues is how the character was filmed, mostly in the first Vader scene in R1. Lighting makes a huge difference. I've learned as someone who costumes as Vader and takes photos that the overhead light is very important.
The eyes should be in the shadow of the dome. The chin should be in the shadow of the mask. The area between the mask and the dome should be in shadow. I know in movies, even the original trilogy, they used lights coming from the camera side. But the overhead light needs to be the brightest to create shadows in the helmet.
I think one of the reasons the neck looked so obvious and gunmetal is because it was so lit-up instead of being in a shadow.

Pre-production picture looks like. Why build a weapon you might not use later. You really just need a placeholder until you've decided on a design.
Was that directed towards Starboard or Toedmiester?
This was photographed post-production in California at ILM with Kermit Eller in the original suit. He's holding the Kobold flash as a stand-in, Ralph McQuarrie airbrushed a lightsaber handle over it for the famous Star Wars poster.

I agree. I would argue (and mentioned a few months ago, actually) that they could have used the EXACT same ANH Vader suit used in the original film, and it still wouldn't have looked the same, because of the differences in how modern films look versus the way films were shot in the 70s and 80s. I definitely noticed that the suit in R1 looked different from ANH, but I don't share the sentiment of some that it "ruined" the final scenes of the movie. I guess for me, enjoying each film comes first, followed by having fun with studying and scrutinizing the props and behind the scenes stuff.
I think the same could be said for JEJ's voice in Rogue One, actually. Obviously it's the same actor, but in the two films (R1 and ANH) Vader sounds very, very different. I don't think it's that James Earl Jones is old, or even the delivery of the lines. I think it's that there is a lot more bass in the Rogue One version of the voice, versus in ANH where Vader sounds... a bit tinny? Almost like a man yelling into a cheap megaphone or something. In Rogue One I thought the effects added to JEJ's voice sounded more similar to how he sounded in Revenge of the Sith.
