Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

I don't know about you all but look how fast the past year has gone by! Remember when we were all aching for EPVII to get here? It's already out of DVD! It'll be here before we know it! :)

Remember each PT film had at least a dozen different tv spots, VII had quite a few, it'll start soon and gain traction. Plus the toys will start in and have kids wanting to see the new SW cuz they have cool toy commercials. Come on, its STAR WARS. They will have a bombardment of marketing for this, we have 4 months to go!

I'm curious how they will market the toys and different merch, and who they will be marketed towards... given the darker tone of the movie.

I actually think it's a smart move by Disney to not begin the marketing push yet. With one new Star Wars movie coming out every year for likely the next decade and beyond, it's wise to give the fans a break from advertisements until about three months before each new film premieres. Lest we be fed a constant stream of Star Wars promotions--film premieres, dvd launches, video game launches, casting announcements, and then teasers and trailers for the next film in the queue. As much as I adore Star Wars, that would be Star Wars overload. It would get stale after a while. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing, and all that.

No, I think they're handling it properly. Let the dust settle from the TFA box office juggernaut, and begin ramping up promotions for Rogue One after Labor Day. Ninety days is plenty of time to stoke interest in the first standalone film, and educate folks on where the film fits in the franchise timeline. If anything, a break in promotions will help casual fans understand that Rogue One is a new movie. Whereas a constant stream of Star Wars stuff from one end of the calendar to the other, would cause them to tune out.

Yeah, I also wouldn't be surprised to see individual character expose pieces either from EW or as part of the TV marketing. They will make an effort to establish some familiarity with both the new characters and where this fits in the SW universe.

U-Wing actual still from the movie. It's a quick troop dropper-offer. UWING.jpg

Looks neat though I'm not crazy about the cockpit section's similarity to the Y-wing's. Is the the Y-wing made by Incom too in the new canon?

The marketing release schedule is following a decades old proven model......people are on vacation now. Wait till summer ends, and kids go back to school, and start watching the new tv season, word of mouth is free....

See TFA designers. With just a little work you too could have come up with an equally cool First Order gunship instead of the flying turd (Higgins boat in space - that's what they were told...) we got!

That U wing is looking great, now the principle of the wings is revealed. Personally I would have preferred them to be a little thicker as breaking aerofoils as they come into land but its by far the best design yet from the new films, I really like it a lot better now .The scale of it was difficult to judge because of two things: the Y like cockpit and the X wing type engines.
Unfortunately because we are so accustomed to those iconic craft the immediate impression is that the U is a smaller one man fighter, but it actually a lot bigger than those two, being a landing craft that holds several people, which was kind of throwing me off every time I looked at it,its just scale perception based on the previous ships.
In other news I found this interesting: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/rogue-one-drama-writer-tony-916695
I've recently read that the reshoots have just completed, which seems to be a bit longer than we anticipated. And I think there has been a very deliberate attempt to change the tone of the film , particularly the ending as hinted. Maybe the potential of some of the characters used has changed with script rewrites. I in no way think this will damage the film, but I think it will be somewhat different to what was originally conceived.

Yeah, the cockpit scaling seems off. It must be pretty spacious inside. I don't know why but it seems odd to me that the Rebels have dedicated landing craft. There's nothing saying they couldn't I suppose but I guess I assumed if any infiltration was needed, it was done a little more subtly. Maybe I'm subconsciously thinking of ROTJ.

Yeah, the canopy is the only thing bothering me. It looks like a fighter with room for maybe two very friendly and crowded passengers lying down against the fuselage.
No reason a bigger craft can't have bigger windows, but it looks so much like the other canopies they have on fighters that it throws it off.
