Rocketeer Rocket Pack, no not THAT pack, the other one...

Greetings all!

Like others, I have a love for the Rocketeer and in the process of building a costume of our beloved Cliff Secord's alter ego.

However, I want to make the original comic book rocket pack (the bullet)

So, being extremely new to prop building, while I have an idea how to build about 80% of this, I have no clue how to form the curved bullet-point on top of the rocket.

Anyone have any suggestions how to make that top point?

Thanks!

Have someone turn it on a wood lathe or carve it out of foam, cover that with bondo and then sand till you have the shape you need.

Thanks! That actually sounds easier than my original thought of heating pvc pipe and forming it.

You could also find a plastic cereal bowl of the correct diameter and approximate shape, and use that as a base form.

Is there any recommended type of foam to sculpt/carve something like this on? Or will your run-o-the-mill styrofoam from Michaels work?

Hey I was gonna post this thread ! i mentioned in my other thread my interest in making this sucker too - a really cool simple design. I'm looking forward to what you come up with !

I'm starting with a tub that used to contain protein powder, just need to build up the cone top then figure out the detailing.

That's one of the main reasons I'm doing this version is it's simplicity :lol

That, and I read the comic before the movie so it has a special place in my heart. :love

I'm just thankful the movie costume isn't much of a departure from the comics so finding the jacket, jodhpurs pants and boots won't be much of a stretch.

Okay, I've had my first go around at trying to get measurements on the rocket pack. With comics it's a bit different because you pretty much have to eyeball it since they're a bunch of drawing :lol

So I based the measurements off how the back of the pack hung on Cliff. Comparing it to my frame, the back comes to about my mid shoulders which is about 10 inches.

I scaled an image of the pack from my graphic novel and resized it accordingly and made the additional measurements from that.

Some of the measures are hard to read so if you have any questions what I posted, let me know.

Wish me luck! :)

Disney actually made a rocket pack like that for the movie. It used to be one display at Disney/MGM back in the 90s when they had a prop building. They changed the design because it didn't look good when worn on an actor.

David.

Ok... someone MUST have taken a photo of this!

Actually, I used to have a copy of The Rocketeer Movie Magazine and one of the pages it showed all the prop concepts of the rocket pack how it went from a single rocket to dual, and I'm pretty sure the first image was a picture of the prototype rocket pack, real close to the comic version (I think it was red/silver)

According to JayPHX, this is scanned from the TOPPS magazine (as per the above posted thread):

there were two prototype packs of that style i believe...i have to look at my notes...a red one and another one.....both are privately owned.......
