Re: robo3687's Iron Man 2 Pep Files (Mark IV/VI underway)

This was made from Robo3687's Ironman Pepakura Files (found on the first page of this thread). I used Cardstock and Super Glue to assemble it. Then Fiberglassed the inside (Fiberglass Mat) and smoothed the outside with Joint Compound.
It's quite upsetting how quickly I typed that, compared to how long I worked on it:lol.

So that wonderful white surface I'm seeing is joint compound over cardstock ? Wow!! That photo.... it looks like the piece is one big hunk of white plastic! The surface looks almost... soap-like !

Joint compound... like one uses when putting up dry-wall /sheet-rock ?

Re: robo3687's Iron Man 2 Pep Files (Mark IV/VI underway)

Actually, It has a coat of grey automotive primer on it. I don't know why the photo turned out so light. Maybe, because it was still wet?

Yep. This is what I use:
SHEETROCK Brand 1 qt. Pre-Mixed Joint Compound - 380270 at The Home Depot

I get the smaller size, because most of the time, it drys out in the can before I can use all of it.

i havent got that far yet, but generally you want to build it and cast it then do a latex or silicone pour - not sure but i THINK you can just use some silicone caulk to do a silicone pour.

some one feel free to correct me on that one

I made the neck seal the same way I did everything else, thinking I would do a latex or silicone pour like Azurial mentioned. But after seeing all the great foam builds out there, I think I'm gonna go that route for the neck seal.

I guess, work with material you feel comfortable using.

im told to rescale that its best to measure straight down from the center of your body and convert that to mm. there really is no set formula for scaling as every one is sized differently

Hey all, I am having a really tough time scaling (I know, common issue). I used Robo's scale and it was too small, I try to scale up and the pieces don't seem to fit on the page. I am 6'4" so I know I am above average height. I have read up on all the tips and forums. Even have a 10" IM from my son that I am trying to scale off of. Is there anyone around my height, or close enough, that can tell me what scale they put in? Greatly appreciated.

probably the upper torso like the back and chest to check for width or even the whole torso to make sure that you have everything in place

How perfect is too perfect? Should I spend all my time working out every little detail? Heres some pics to show you what i mean! I dont think i am happy with it but it takes sooooo long to fix it, then paint it (thinking everything is perfect) just to see there is another spot that needs fixed! Also there are a lot of scratch looks to it. But its smoother then a babys As...... you know what i mean! why can i still see these scracth marks?

I did some research and that is what i found everone is reccomending! Does it work really good? Sand with wet sand after too right? 400 or 600 grit? Will that filler primer fill holes like the one in that picture of the eye?

You don't need to go that crazy. you need to fill (smooth) the large imperfections (near the eye and other on the faceplate) but, 220 grit on the scratches will work fine. Use enamel paint to finish. Minimum 4 coats and it will be smooth. Besure to sand with 220 prior to last coat (or 2).

The idea is to build up a thick enamal paint coat that is easy to sand out.
